U-turn : A turn-on engaging thriller
reachmallya19 May 2016
When you talk proudly about Kannada films in the recent times you can hardly miss mentioning Pawan Kumar's "Lucia" . The immense success of this film put Pawan onto the list of acclaimed film-makers and the expectation level just got higher. This really puts him in a tight situation. After a gap of more than two years Pawan is back with his new project / film "U turn". The title is catchy for sure and the trailer does tempt you to watch as soon as it hits the screen.

Unlike Lucia, this is not a mind-bending, twisty or a clever script. Its minimalist, focused, fast paced and follows a linear narrative. As revealed in the trailer its a story about the mysterious events that occur on a flyover. How these events get connected to each of the characters in the film is interestingly woven. Its quite unusual to have a female play the lead protagonist but it seems to be a very sensible decision. In any narrative there should be some character which we should sympathise with and that kind of fits in right. The urban set-up of Bangalore that we live in blends perfectly with the plot. Even though the narrative scopes itself to Bangalore, it kind of works for any metropolitan city where time, traffic, chaos take precedence.

The film starts with some heavy conversational scene which is rather unconnected to the main plot. So even if you walk in five minutes late into the show you haven't missed anything important. "U Turn" is not those "dont miss the beginning" films. It flows freely and falls in place by the end of first thirty minutes. Once the main plot kicks in it hooks you on. The plot is so thin and sacred that you just cant think of tampering it by giving unnecessary faking shocks. In a way the film builds up and unfolds in a predictable sort which made sense to me. It could have been clever but the tone is such that it is more subtle than being complex. Having the lucid Lucia experience there are high chances that you could have expected it to go to wow you but the narrative chooses to be straight and more importantly delivers what it has to. We Indians are kind of fond of message oriented films. Ask any film-maker, he says there is a social message, its become a norm sort of. If you build a narrative such that the message is passed and not forced that probably has more impact. Those who have watched "Sairat" will relate to this. U-turn too does not force any message but does bring out the aspect of civic sense and responsibilities. I hope after watching people will remember and get reminded of their responsibilities on and off the roads. Lets not just limit ourselves to put on some FB post stating "I will not take this or that turn #uturn".

There is shift in genre from romance, thriller, mystery, horror. Its kind of risky given the mood swings however its an interesting experiment which did not disturb me much. There is no scope for songs, forced comical situations and am glad that no compromise has been done on this part owing to the commercial aspects. This is appreciable! There are scenes where in dialogues are excessive. Since most of the audience connect with dialogues more than the visual this traditional technique is still followed.

Performances were pretty decent. Shraddha fits in right for the role. A new face was seriously needed and she seems to have played it well. Many might feel that her Kannada could have been better but w.r.t the character she plays it is quite OK. Krishna Hebbale once again plays a cop. He is kind of senior. Roger Narayan gives out a new feel and seems to be a great find for the role. Dilip Raaj is a fine actor but has been underutilized. Hope he gets noticed for his work. There is one actor who keeps on coming to your mind while you watch the film but never comes on screen. Baadal!

Technically this is a well executed film. There is nothing awesome about the visuals as the shots are more natural and more like what you see in day-today life. The sound-scape especially for a city like Bangalore seems very effective.

No big producers, no big stars yet Pawan and his team manage to pull out a film that engages you for about two hours. Agreed that its of a different experience than Lucia but how many films like U-turn gets written, executed and delivered? Could it have been more better? Maybe! Could it have different way of ending? Maybe! But it would spoil the narrative. Looks like the only way it had to end has been followed. Well the fact is, Its an indigenous script and it surely deserves your time.

Innovative Movie on Road Safety
iamraorajesh27 May 2016
8/10..Thanks Pawan Kumar for bringing the much-needed road-safety message hard-hittingly and convincingly in a very innovative way from your movie 'U-Turn'. Being a Kannadiga, I am ashamed to say that when driving on roads and following traffic rules, Bengalureans behavior is most inhumane, indiscipline, inconsiderate and insensitively rash especially bikers then cabs, small trucks, buses...And this rhetoric is coming from who have experience living in top metro cities across world. Even the most populated and impoverished Mexico City drivers follow traffic rules at their best. Looking at Bengaluru mad and chaotic traffic, it is hard to defend foreigners calling India a shxtty hole. It is shocking that India renews its Guinness records for having most number of road accidents and deaths in world every year. About 15 lakhs Indians have died in last 10 years and in Bengaluru alone, I believe 10-20 people die every day, mostly bikers again. Bengaluru 'Adjust Madi' attitude on roads is wiping out people mainly youth.

About 'U-Turn' movie qualities, it is good but not up to expectations of 'RangiTaranga', 'KendaSampige' or even Pawan Kumar's own 'Lucia'.

Pros -

1. Good road-safety message delivered to society especially the much needed one for Bengalureans.

2. Innovative storytelling with good thrilling elements.

3. Technically decent - sleek direction, good screenplay, decent background score and editing.

4. I personally felt the climax is good, contrary to popular verdict, as I have experienced and heard about similar paranormal happenings in life.

Cons -

1. Movie felt predictable with mystery elements given away with unnecessary special effects before murders.

2. Protagonist actress Shraddha's Kannada pronunciation was not up to mark. Her expressions felt similar in most scenes lacking shades and micro-expressions.

3. Acting by most actors felt flat and routine even in some intense scenes e.g. post jeep and jail murders the actors expressions lacked intensity , fear and depth.

4. Over usage of Kanglish (Kannada with English) in conversations and impractical American words (viz. Homicide for Murder, Cheque for Bill) in Indian culture should have been avoided.

5. Some scenes were not convincing e.g. a beggar residing on flyover and that too watching over people whole time looks filmy.

6. Movie felt hastily shot with minimal budget with sincerity lacking in some places.

7. Inclusion of few preachy scenes on traffic safety would have been good.

Despite the flaws, 'U-Turn' should be watched by everyone for its innovative storytelling and convincing social message on road safety.

U Turn: Ridiculous plot holes in otherwise OK thriller
csn_6118 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Ghost film ? Thriller? Mystery..? The Director is confused and leaves you too in the same condition in this underwhelming film..

SPOILERS:

Safe to write spoilers after nearly an year has elapsed. Because I want to express my anguish at the plot holes in what could have been an otherwise OK thriller.

1. Ghosts kill and take revenge just like humans. Not one but two, A mom and child who were knocked dead on the ill fated flyover. They ride home on bike pillions , making the bike falter till they climb on. They are so adept at murders that they can make them look like suicides too. They eat apples partially and bring them back to full shape too. Ghosts are super natural, remember?

2. You can see ghosts,( well only some of the characters, whosoever director decides that you can see) they talk and and touch and you can hug them too.

3 They( ghosts) can break the fall of someone who jumped off a skyscraper and make the body slowwwwlllly thud down without fatal injuries. WOW!. That is original!

One time watch, without putting any thinking caps...

A Intriguing Tale Not to be missed !!
jvikas-9625022 May 2016
We see umpteen traffic breaks on b'lore roads everyday – but have you seen a U-Turn which went wrong big time ? Pawan Kumar (of 'Lucia' fame) narrates a gripping tale of Double-road flyover in his style. "U- turn" (with English subtitles) is about an ambitious intern journalist craving for excellence in her field. How the story unfolds….. ?? Naaaaaaaaaaaa – why should I have all the fun ? Take a break and see the story unfold on big screen :-) Cinematography and BGM – These are the make/break areas of any suspense flick, and they have been well taken care of to deliver chills to the audience. Performances – Pawan Kumar has hit bull's eye again in terms of casting. The protagonist (Shraddha Srinath) is impressive and so are the supporting characters (including Roger Narayan of Hollywood fame) who deliver convincingly. Screenplay, Editing & Direction – Kudos to the young director for venturing into this genre and delivering it yet again. The story & screenplay is well-crafted and engaging, especially, the 1st half keeps the suspense intact and audience guessing (similar to the movie's trailer). Editing is crisp and straightforward, without any unwanted footage annoying the viewers. Minuses: The 2nd half is a bit predictable and unraveling of an important twist may not go too well with a few. Verdict: A lesson well-conveyed through a mysterious tale – a suspense thriller not to be missed by the Bengalureans !!

A beautifully woven thriller revolving around an incident on a flyover
abhif24 May 2016
This is one of the best entertainers I've come across in this genre. You really are missing out on a gem if you miss this one,I can give you that.Skillfully narrated with excellent cinematography complementing it.No junk anywhere. It has been successful in preserving the audience's attention and interest till the very end.People who do not fancy the idea of existence of supernatural force might find very few parts of the movie irksome. What is more commendable is how the director has tapped into new talent. The impeccable quality simply reflects on the efforts gone into its making. This movie will certainly garner more appraisals. To sum it all up, a highly recommended thriller you can't afford to miss.

Good thriller
ranikaith14 April 2020
So the beginning of the movie was promising and i was excited to know what happens further on. But somewhere in the middle it was clear that there will be some supernatural powers involved and the plot became predictable. Still there were some twists in the end but they didnt add much tension to the film, mabye the one at the end, which was inspired by a real incident. It was a certainly a decent movie, not perfect, the acting was really good and the camera technique also executed well. For a movie evening with friends or Family this movie is def. a good choice. Between Stuttgart is not nice ;)

A rare gem among Kannada movies
yamanoor30 December 2021
Good Kannada movies are hard to come by. This one alone can move the needle quite a bit to the high side.

I will not reveal plots. Except for some shaky scripting in the last few minutes, the movie is remarkably watchable.

A little predictable, but worth a watch
arkomukherjee8726 June 2017
My first foray into Kannada movies and I'm not disappointed. U-Turn is a movie in the horror/mystery genre that shows the brilliance of simple story-telling and the right casting. All actors played to their strengths, and nothing was overdone. Cheers to Pawan Kumar, the director-cum-writer.

The movie revolves around a journalism intern, Rachna (Shraddha Shrinath), who is working on a story about people jumping a divider with their bikes on Bangalore's Double Road flyover, by moving loose blocks of concrete. She sees this as a blatant violation of traffic rules, and the loosened blocks are just kept lying on the street, causing problems for drivers, and sometimes fatal accidents. In her quest to get a violator's perspective, she manages to trace an address and pays a visit. This leads to her becoming embroiled in a murder investigation as a prime suspect. From there on, prepare to be hooked into a world of mystery and intrigue.

'Lucia' Director Pawan Kumar is back with new mystery thriller
shreekara-199521 May 2016
'Lucia' Director Pawan Kumar is back with new mystery thriller cinema 'U-Turn', with its surpassing trailer and regular updates in social networking sites created good expectations among audience, Pawan Kumar is well known for creating lively characters with no much strain involved, including this new release and his previous movies he proved again that he is an expert screenplay writer, with neat presentation and edge of the seat thriller 'U-Turn' marks as the must watch movie of this month.

The best part of 'U-Turn' is its timely and funky BGMs, music given by Poornachandra Tejaswi carries the audience in the proper tone and succeeds in holding the audience in its phase, and cinematography team did the tremendous job, including Siddarth Nuni who previously held camera in Lucia along with Satya Hegde, Advaith Gurmurthy, especially the oner or the long take taken in the police station is handled very perfectly and neatly crisped later on the desk, Pawan Kumar's poetic and metaphorical usage is the plus point to the movie flow, that enhances the intensity of the character and the plot, U-Turn is one technically excellent movie among some recent releases, Pawan Kumar and team is an inspiration in making a quality movie in a very modest budget.

Shraddha Srinath performed very well who in preparing an article for a newspaper get entailed in series of murder mystery, Dilip Raj rendered his modest performance, Roger Narayan is a person who deserves appreciation for his finest acting, his screen presence and dialogue presenting are very unique, Radhika Chetan has improved very well in her performance compared to her previous work, as the mystery unlocks excitement on the plot also exceeds its height, Pawan Kumar is a new David Fincher in presenting such mystery thrillers in very effective manner and an unconventional film maker who dares to give a try in presenting story in a different way.

This socially appealing supernatural thriller rides in the right direction for genre lovers; others can just wave their hands while passing.
SAMTHEBESTEST24 October 2022
U Turn (2016) : Brief Review -

This socially appealing supernatural thriller rides in the right direction for genre lovers; others can just wave their hands while passing. Pawan Kumar's U Turn is a supernatural thriller and therefore a work of fiction, yet it mentions 'inspired by real events'. When you know it's about ghosts, there is a very minor chunk of the audience who's gonna believe its reliability. However, that is a different topic of argument, so I will leave that to every individual. The plot of U Turn revolves around the deaths of motorists who break a traffic rule at a particular flyover in Bangalore. Whoever breaks the traffic rules of the partition block is found dead on the same day. An intern journalist intends to write an article on traffic rule breakers, but gets dragged into a whirlpool of murder cases and deception. The police department overlooks many shocking facts and closes the cases by calling them suicides. However, one of the cops accompanies the lady journalist to find out the mystery behind the deaths. The writing is not fully convincing at all, but it does keep you hooked for 2 hours. The screenplay is slow in the first half but gathers the lost momentum in the second half. When you think that the entire thing is becoming too predictable, you suddenly hit a new twist at the end. Even that turn is a bit problematic, but somewhat enjoyable. Shraddha Srinath carries the entire film on her shoulder, but I don't know why she looked nervous and uncomfortable on a few occasions. The rest of the cast has hardly done anything that can be noticed in terms of acting. Pawan Kumar keeps the film relatable throughout, but loses the tempo in the last 10 minutes. The supernatural stuff takes over, more than what was needed. Nevertheless, U Turn still works for genre lovers, while others can pass by without saying hello.

RATING - 6.5/10*

A story that revolves around mysterious events occurring on the double-road flyover.
patwardhanamogh20 May 2016
First of all, take a bow man! The director Pawan Kumar has proved his mettle yet again with his direction and story. The story is fresh, the actors Shraddha, Dileep Raj, Roger Narayan are natural and the background score by Poornachandra Tejaswi is wonderful. The movie keeps you wondering about might have happened, throughout.

The movie begins on a light note, but as the story progresses it starts getting more serious and mysterious with each scene, drawing you into it completely. The movie should have retained this element till the end.

I say this because, the ending of the movie is a bit unconventional and might not go well with most viewers. Also the ending doesn't match the brilliance of the rest of the film. Otherwise, this is one awesome movie with a thoughtful message! No wonder if it's remade in a few languages. Congratulations team U-turn!

Not What It Seems
bshanley-614616 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was billed as a movie about deaths on a flyover which were be being investigated by a young woman reporter. I expected an "investigative journalism" story about shoddy construction practices, or maybe about corrupt politicians. Part way through the film I was delighted to find out it was actually a thriller/mystery, in which the journalist became prime suspect in a series of deaths related to the flyover. Yes, of course India has the monsoon. But when thunder and lightning started to repeatedly come forth, I got worried. It went downhill fast, very fast. Turns out the murders were committed by a ghost with superpowers. I really wanted to give this film one star, but I was afraid the ghost my revenge me too. Don't waste your time. 7.5? It's what I call "Indian Audience Inflation."

Trailer is very Twisty & Suspense thriller, I gonna recommend you to watch this movie, good come back from Lucia Director Pawan
prashantpattar20 May 2016
Three years after his much-acclaimed micro-budget sci-fi romance, "Lucia", director Pawan Kumar returns with his Kannada film "U Turn", which is subtitled in English. Released under the Drishyam Films banner, this is a conveniently woven, head-scratching, super- natural thriller based on true events.

The tone of the narration is set by the inverted shot of a busy road in blue hue with the song "Karma" reverberating in the background. It is interesting as well as arresting.

Set in Bengaluru, the narration follows Rachna (Shraddha Srinath), a trainee journalist who is chasing a story related to motorists, who with scant respect for civic issues, shift the road dividers to take a "short-cut" U-turn on a busy bridge.

Suspense thriller, I gonna recommend you to watch this movie, good come back from Lucia Director Pawan.

All actors did perfect acting for they role..BGM is super it's feel interesting. There is no song in film and it's not necessary also because movie screenplay is so beautiful.narration also good. first half is very interesting and second half little bit dragged but everyone will wait for climax..everyone expectation will take uturn..climax is clean and cool but as compare to story speed and narration climax can will be do more better. as total movie is good worth to watch in theater. after Rangitaranga, kendasampige, atagara,Thithi,Uturn will be a good treat for all Kannada people.. please go watch in theater and support Kannada movies.. thank you..

Straight narration of story, full of suspense till the end.. Good message for us, to follow traffic rules..

Even our friends and family may get suffer if we don't follow traffic rule..

First half of movie the movie revolve around unknown forces.. We think the story in many angles, but in climax we feel its very simple story and has good message.. Climax could have been better. But I liked the movie..

One more Kannada movie added to my best movie list.. Good camera work and sound mixing..

Take a U-Turn and watch this movie..

Half cooked script that fails to keep you engaged.
polluprashi117 October 2016
The first 15 minutes of the movie is just ridiculous. There is meaningless introduction that test your patience. The dialogues are not written with purpose makes you think what you are watching. The movie just basks on pro-kannada sentiment. Apart from the social message and fantastic work by Roger Narayan and Shradda there is nothing to take away from this movie. It is unbelievable how the director even can think of exchanging bikes in the middle of a busy fly-over with no second of waste. In today's world especially in Bangalore you cant even expect a mechanic to just cross road to come service the bike you expect him to come to middle of flyover to exchange. The movie builds curiosity to some extent but cheats you at the end by a ridiculous ending. Lucia was a great movie and with that expectation I rented this movie online. I was disappointed big time. I hope Pawan make good movies in future.

Fantastic! Thriller to the core
cweetgal18 December 2019
Only a Bangalorean will get the pulse of the movie. Its completely shot in Bangalore and one who lives here will get the storyline. I will not even mention which situation of Bangalore is the base of this movie, it can spoil the thrill. Brilliantly taken, acting is superb. No nonsense dialogues/scenes. Superb kannada movie. Shraddha and everyone did awesome job.

Brilliant Mystery thriller and one of the best movie's of 2016
ridinbal28 December 2016
"It may not be the best from Pawan(director of lucia) but his making style is really good and message was rightly portrayed which makes it a good horror mystery thriller film with social message.'U-Turn' should be watched by everyone for its innovative storytelling and convincing social message on road safety"

Positives- 1.)Direction and script- Pawan who earlier directed lucia was excellent movie which i rated 5 out of 5 but if i compare with this film then it may not be that great. He was trying to add horror thriller to a social message driven film which may have its flaws but he did a different attempt and i must appreciate him for that. Script was engaging along with direction.

2.)Shradda srinath , roger narayan and dilip raj- These 3 actors portrayed their roles properly and out of them shradda was outstanding and she was able to bring out those emotions perfectly without any flaws. Roger narayan as inspector was right choice by director. Dilip raj was fine.

3.)cinematography and edits 4.)Bg score 5.)Message about road safety was rightly conveyed.

Negatives- 1.)Cliches in second half - First half went with introduction of characters and that was fine. But second half the director's vision of portraying certain elements had flaws and it disturbed the experience. Director could have taken care of that to avoid this type of mistakes.

2.)Predictability- Because of certain cliché'd scenes it was predictable for audience which spoiled the experience of mystery thriller.

Is it a must watch? Yes it is a must watch film and it has a great social message. It is a innovative movie on road safety.

Overall- Despite flaws Its a good film if you check the overall aspect. It could have been better if director had rechecked some scenes to avoid some errors. But its fine if you not go with high expectations. It tells about the mysterious events that occur on the double road flyover with great social message added to it. I recommend you to watch it but without much expectations.

My rating- 4/5(Brilliant Mystery Thriller and one of the best movie's of 2016)

Thinking beyond my personal perspective
madhusudan134222 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
For me the movie was fantastic. I would have given 10 stars if it had a logical conclusion. If you leave out the conclusion. The entire movie just sails through. Direction 5 on 5 - Pawan Kumar is just that Ideal director one wishes to be. Story 4 on 5 - Needed a better conclusion. Cinematography 5 on 5 - Can it get better? Heroine 5 on 5 - Might have got a crush on her. Acting 4.5 on 5 - Everyone has done justice to their character. Music 4 on 5 - Nothing much other than background music that you would listen to. Could have got a bit better in some scenes. Connecting the Dots, Giving importance for minute details everything is nearly perfect. And best of all the movie carries a sure shot message for Indians. Go watch it. Don't miss out. Some may say the Climax was bad hence the movie to be bad. Do not listen to their advice. Just go watch it. It depends on the perspective and you may love the climax like me. No induced characters, no induced comedy. Just the amount that's required. It's like a perfect meal which you relish except for the dessert.

*******Spoiler******* I too have taken the U-turn on that flyover.

Excellent portrayal of a simple concept
msarunms198714 July 2016
Just a simple concept - However, very well presented. There was not a moment to think elsewhere. Each scene is so strongly tied to the predecessor and successor.

A suspense thriller packed with a wonderful message is what you can expect from the beloved director Pawan Kumar. Just as Lucia, this is another masterpiece, which is not a typical hero-oriented movie, but a subjective one.

A modern girl, her boy friend, their beliefs about super-natural powers, traffic violations, sincere cops - These are some of the key words that hit ones mind when they watch this movie.

It is definitely a must-watch for people who think it is OK not to obey traffic rules.

Disappointed with the U turn. Couldn't believe that this is the same person who directed Lucia.
bharath_mike22 May 2016
Totally Disappointed with the U-turn. When Pawan Kumar announced about his next project after Lucia, i was excited as most of them. And when trailer came out i was in an entire different world. i couldn't wait for the film to be released as i was confident that this is going to be one of the best movie of the year as there was an immense trust on new poster boy of Kannada movie industry "Mr. Pawan Kumar"

When i started watching the movie , the first scene itself was a huge let down. The heroine of the movie "Shraddha Srinath"'s expression was so awful that i had one hand on my bald head. and i must be honest the story of the first half was too gripping.. Awesome narration, Brilliant screenplay and technically spot on and it kept me on edge of my seat. Though the acting was pathetic from most of the actors including the heroine, the story and screenplay was able to mask it. At interval i was already placing the movie next to "Seven". It was that gripping.

And then the second half began and that was the start of whole comedy show. The story lost all its soul. I mean how can you believe that just because u took a "U turn" u r being haunted. This must be the lamest Horror reason that i have ever come across. If it was thriller then there is a lack of logical points. If it was a horror movie then there was no effort to scare you at all. If it was a "horror thriller" then it feels it was directed by someone else and not pawan kumar. The script was so weak that we were making fun of the film scenes, and turns out its not just us, it was half the theatre.

How can the director who narrated the story of Lucia , is capable of writing and directing U turn. it feels like the climax of the movie is decided on the morning of the shoot and it looks like out of so many suggestions , one climax was chosen at random.

Totally disappointed with the Movie. The man who made me watch the kannada movie again made me feel so awful about the kannada movie all over again.

Hopefully next movie of his will be an upgrade over this or at least not this degraded.
