D'avin does not hear an announcement that the kids hear and he is told that is because "adults lose the top end of pitch". In 2005 'The Mosquito' was developed, which sends out a very loud high pitched tone around 17.4 kHz. The sound is inaudible to most adults but very unpleasant to young people. Shopkeepers use it to chase all those pesky teenagers away. Some folks think this is discriminatory.
The crisis of losing air renewal in a spaceship or habitat is a popular scifi trope. However, in the real world it is a very protracted crisis. Imagine a 15' X 15' room with a 10' ceiling; there is enough air in that room to last one person for about one day. By the way, in closed space suffocation the killer is not oxygen depletion but rather carbon dioxide levels getting lethally high (carbon dioxide plus the water in your body makes carbonic acid, and acidosis is deadly).
