Nice leads but repetitive story
phd_travel25 September 2022
The leading couple Sung Joon and Han Ye Seul are watchable and attractive. They have a spark between them. It's a romance between a Stanford trained psychiatrist and a fortune teller. But their hot and cold romance and experiment or not issue is repetitive. Too many scenes of sweet behaviour and then flying into a rage. In between the psychological patients are diverting. But issues with the Chairman and the biological mom are too slow to resolve. The older woman doctor and younger man relationship is daring. 36 year age gap! The series could have been tightened and shortened by a third in length and it would have been quite good. Also the comedy is spread a bit thin. Her nonsense French is quite funny. Read the subs carefully when she does her fortune telling.

Cute and Surprisingly Accurate

Madame Antione was unexpectedly well done, with a feisty FL who had appropriate reactions to the often cold and calculating ML. I thought the backstories of the leads was well done and engaging, and the acting was great across the board. I thought the show demonstrated realistic relationships between the characters, and while I found some of them annoying I was happy at how they were written.

Most pleasant of all was the accuracy given to the psychology! The psychological disorders were portrayed very well, and I enjoyed how much detail was put into each "side" story. I also liked how the side stories didn't influence the main story - I think it's annoying how convenient it is when a side story directly correlates and influences what is happening to the main story (i.e. Lucifer, House, etc.). I also liked how even though the ML was a psychologist, he had his own struggles that were handled thoughtfully as a psychologist might have trouble with their own mental health despite knowing a lot of the answers.

Overall I really enjoyed this show, I would consider it a rare gem, and would definitely recommend it!

Jaded Psychologist Meets Spunky Fortuneteller. Shenanigans Ensue.
nishera25 January 2022
If you prefer realistic stories, or feel that no self-respecting woman should ever waste her time with sketchy relationships, or give a guy multiple chances to redeem himself (despite however attracted she may be), then this probably isn't going to be your cup of tea. On the other hand, if you are a fan of the human experience, and enjoy watching flawed characters grow and discover themselves (and each other), or if you just love a good old "enemies to lovers" plot, then you're in luck!

Despite the rather heavy nature of the subject matter (psychological issues & treatment), the actual story execution is by contrast quite light, sprinkled with plenty of comic relief. Han YeSeul's sassy and determined character was especially endearing, and I found the whole 'revenge and counter-revenge', and the "I know, but I can't let him know that I know...." and "she doesn't know anything...does she?" dynamic between her and Sung Joon to be just hilarious!

Of course, there are also plenty of flaws. The psychology/treatment aspects are oversimplified, and the "experiment" was handled in a ridiculously unprofessional manner. But since they are basically just foils for the larger romantic plot, I personally found these shortcomings forgivable. Additionally, this film relies heavily on secrets and ambiguity between the couple for much of it's humor. If you don't like frenemies who would rather pussy foot around with verbal sparring, rather than just clearly state their feelings up front, then you will likely find this story quite tedious.

ROMANCE RATING: * * * 7.5/10 With 8+ longer kissing scenes, there's plenty of romantic contact for thirsty viewers. However, I personally could have wished for a bit more "buy in" between SJ and HSY. The kisses were there, but they didn't really make my heart race or draw me in (though it could have also been an issue of how they were shot). And sadly, I just couldn't buy the chemistry between HSE and LJH. But all in all, it was still a fun watch.

Surprised some rate it low I think it is a hidden Gem

Warning: Spoilers
9/10 is my rating. This is a 2016 South Korean romantic comedy series with 16, 60 minute, episodes.

Like all good fortune tellers, Go Hye-rim (Han Ye-seul) is good at reading body language, picking up on subtle verbal clues and asking insightful questions. To add an air of mystique to her sessions, she speaks French and pretends to consult with French Queen Mary Antoinette. She even goes by the name Madame Antoine when telling fortunes out of her coffee cafe. Hye-rim is a beautiful divorcee who is putting her daughter through school abroad. Although burned by love before, she is ready to give love another chance.

A serious and handsome research psychologist moves in to the space above Hye-rim and annoyingly sets up a practice he calls Madame Antoine. Choi Soo-hyun (Sung Joon) thinks the woman in the cafe below is a con artist and is determined to teach her a lesson. He has never been in love and believes that women choose men for material reasons and what people consider love is all in the brain not the heart. He performed an experiment on a woman once where he had three desirable bachelors approach her: all handsome but one wealthy, one athletic and a young flower boy to prove she would pick wealth. It worked that time so he plans to repeat it and show the same outcome. Only this time his female participant will be Hye-rim and he plans to play the role of the wealthy bachelor to observe her closely. Things get complicated when the three men start to genuinely have feelings for the beautiful and intuitive Hye-rim and the Doctor struggles to maintain his objectivity.

spoiler 🚨. I was really surprised by how much I like this. I thought from the title in several of the descriptions I read that she would be some kind of silly fortuneteller. She was actually a very intuitive person and even without training a great counselor. Everyone around her realized she had that natural ability. At first I did not like how cold he was until I later understood the reason for it. I had a hard time believing he would've so steadfastly stuck to the experiment and I thought he should've realized he loved her sooner than he did. There was a point where she turns things on him a bit and what she did was pretty cold although he deserved it. I also did not like how people around her when she broke it off with him were kind of blaming her for how sad he was. He had used her and lied to her so I thought if anything he was the one that should've come around. I also thought it was out of character for him to sink to a suicidal level of depression. As a psychiatrist or psychologist I think he would've realize the signs of that level of depression and reached out to someone. I also thought he was more narcissistic than to take his own life. So that seemed a bit out of character for him.I did like the way it ended very well but I just wish we had seen him moving toward an understanding of what she meant to him a little earlier rather than just a few minutes at the end. Overall I thought it was a great drama with lots of surprises with the characters and the plot in the side stories were also very cute. Second guy was beyond cute but I understood why the main were a better fit as both had a certain level of emotional damage that helped them understand each other. I recommend this highly as a hidden gem.
