Sex & Nudity

  • A character mentions that a female character's "cup size " has gotten larger and that she wants to check. Nothing explicit is shown though..
  • Male mentions a love hotel when he gives his friend some money but, the guy does not understand or didn't hear him. Is barely even noticeable and is a few seconds of a scene.
  • A boy jumps in water after a girl and for a moment he is underwater and sees her skirt swirling upward. He is momentarily stunned, but then he closes his eyes and surfaces.

Violence & Gore

  • Schoolyard fights and the like. These fights are not overly graphic or violent.
  • Shoya at one point forcefully rips Shoko's hearing aides out of her ears causing a little bleeding.
  • A character is seen cornering another character against a fence with violent intent. the character gets hit but no blood or serious violence is shown in this scene.
  • A character slaps another character.

Profanity

  • In the subtitled version, there's no profanity outside a single "Damn".
  • In English dub Crap is said four times and Holy Crap is said once. Sh*t is said three times with one of those being bull. A*shole and Dumba*s are said very few times. Damn is used once. D-bag is used once and is barely noticeable. Three cases of mild religious profanity: God, Oh God and Oh My God are said each once.
  • Mild language

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character holds a French fry with the tip dipped in ketchup for a few seconds, imitating a cigarette. However, this isn't acknowledged by any of the other characters.
  • Adults drink wine.
  • Drugs, recreational: None

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Dark themes are present.
  • There are a lot of sad/emotional moments throughout the movie.

Violence & Gore

  • A deaf girl is bullied throughout the movie, and in one scene, the bullying becomes physical, with her tormentor hanging on her; she bites him and kicks at him in retaliation. Not much violence.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Many kids all target one deaf girl (Shoko) to bully her. Many will feel sympathetic for her. When the kids become teens, only one of the characters (Naoka) still attempts to belittle her. On a ferris wheel, Shoko's sister records Naoka belittling Shoko, she then stands up, screaming at Shoko, and then attempts to smack her.
  • Nishimiya attempts suicide by jumping off a building but is saved by Ishida, but as a result, Ishida falls off the building and falls into water. Some blood is shown, and he remarks that it is very warm, then very cold. Ambulance sirens are heard, and he wakes up in the hospital.
  • A character is seen trying to save another character from suicide. the character succeeds, but ends up falling off the building themselves. some blood is shown in the water. (no weapons)
  • The movie has very heavy themes of suicide and the two main characters both attempt to commit suicide.
