in her (and her son's) own words
ksf-228 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Vogue editor Franca Sozzani is interviewed by her son, camera and microphone in hand. Right at the start, she tells us that she prefers to make her own mistakes, and as an example, we see the very controversial shoot of her models trapped in oil, immediately after the BP oil spill of 2010. She tells us that Yves Saint Laurent was one of her biggest influences. We hear Franca's early history, and her determination to stick to her ideals... along the way, we see the montage of the images she has used in vogue... shocking, futuristic, happy, sad, sexy, bizarre. She is not afraid to fail.. her own quote is "the new starts every day." In the doc, we get to hear from the (word famous) photographers who worked with her, as well as Donatela and other huge names in fashion. I guess the biggest takeaway is that she is not afraid of starting over, so that has given her the courage to be outrageous, headstrong, and over the top. One of my observations is that this doc is focused almost exclusively on the PHOTOS included over the years, while very little is said about the articles... didn't they have written articles in Vogue ?? Certainly interesting to watch for the photos, but I wish they had spent more time on the words and stories that appeared under Sozzani's leadership. Directed by Franceso Carrozzini.

Was Expecting Better

While we want to watch a docu series about Franca and her huge role and accomplisments on fashion, we come across with a constant effort of her son to show his videos as a baby and a son that speaks stupidly to his mum and always trying to correct her WITH ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. thank you

A Fly on the Wall Portrait of Someone Who Changed the World
DavoZed4 May 2021
Love her or hate her, Franca Sozzani has had an enormous impact on our world and this film captures her and her thinking and that impact, without a lot of filter or fuss.

I am fan of what she has done? Not at all. Some of it / much of it offends me but it has happened and I am better / smarter for hearing her side of it and seeing the motivations and thoughts that drove it.

She is annoying, self centered, narcissistic? Yes, probably but she is a genius, she is someone who did not let society's expectations of her, stop her from getting her passion, her art out.

If all of us put as much energy and passion into whatever we did, the world would be unrecognizable.

Terrific

As an insight into Vogue Italia over 3 decades this was just fascinating - the film also includes lots of the photographers, designers and others who were so influential over this period - Peter Lindbergh is my personal favourite. The fact that the film was made by her son gives it extra edge - some might not find her a likeable character, I did but inane case you gives an honest insight into her world and her motivations.

Ok Documentary

Over all kind of annoying documentary depicting a self centred, harsh lady, no matter how 'talented' she was. I would say more of a business lady rather than a visionary. The interviews with her son come across very annoying as she treats his kind of sweet son with disrespect. Her harshness was probably due to her insecurities. Having said that the documentary is watchable.

A vanity project that should have never made it to Netflix offering.

I feel sorry for the son to have to deal with an arrogant nutcase.. The suitable place for this homage should be YouTube or Instagram. Not NEFLIX.

It's very annoying for the audience to display many covers without enough time to see one for at least one second. Ridiculous editing. After watching the 'doc' I didn't find any value (other than he obviously suffers from mommy issues). If you are interested in Carla editorial work (I'm not) just get a book about her. There is also another one about Grace Coddington and likely Carine. Better use of your time. What she did for Vogue is not unique to her. Many editors-in-chief desperately seek to shock their imaginary -yet delusional- target audience, as a way to supposedly sell more issues. What is interesting about Carla is that her inner self is the total opposite of her delicate looks. She turned out to be ruthless, superficial and materialistic, not an angel at all. Overall a disappointing experience, not just with the documentary itself but with her. After watching it, I am not interested in anything touched by her.
