Music movies are having a moment — if, indeed, they ever stopped having one. Take the pop-music biopic. There are times, like right now, when it surges in popularity, yet the form has never gone out of style. And music documentaries, a staple of the indie-film world, have only proliferated during the streaming era. This means that they have to compete for visibility, but a ton of them are getting made and (mostly) getting seen. They’ve become a happy epidemic.
A few, like “Amy” or “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?,” are popular and vital enough to have carved out a place in the culture — and, in the case of both those films, to have inspired the creation of a biopic. I have it on good authority that when you’re trying to put together a music documentary, the prospect of it spawning a biopic can be a key selling point.

The two big original releases on Netflix this month are Spaceman and 3 Body Problem. In Spaceman, Adam Sandler plays an astronaut alone and far from home who desperately wants to fix things with his wife. When he discovers an enormous alien spider in the bowels of his ship, a conversation between the two gets underway, and Sandler has a chance to make some big changes. To be clear: this is not a comedy!
Meanwhile, new sci-fi series 3 Body Problem hails from Game of Thrones co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Along with True Blood writer Alexander Woo, they’ve spun a tale that is set to blow your mind this March. Your mileage may vary, but it certainly looks interesting! And hey, we all love the show’s star, Benedict Wong.

In Bernard-Henri Lévy’s homage to Simone Veil he writes: “The world, French philosopher Gaston Bachelard said a century ago, could be reduced to a series of copyrights. Einstein’s relativity. Descartes’s doubt. Bergson’s laughter. Dante’s hell. Today: Simone Veil’s Europe.” Olivier Dahan’s all-embracing portrait, Simone: Woman of the Century, stars Elsa Zylberstein as Veil from 1968 till 2006, and Rebecca Marder (Arnaud Desplechin’s Tromperie and François Ozon’s Mon Crime) from 1942 through 1967.

Elsa Zylberstein with Anne-Katrin Titze on Simone Veil: “She was really someone fighting for people’s dignity. I didn’t know it was that strong. My models were Meryl Streep, obviously, or Gary Oldman as Churchill (in Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour). So I didn’t want to play her, I wanted to become her.”

In 2008, French politician Simone Veil became only the sixth woman ever inducted into the Académie Française, an august institution tasked with the regulation of the French language. As a newly minted “immortal” — the unofficial name given to the Académie’s 40 members — she was presented with a sword that bore three engravings: the motto of France, that of Europe (“Unis dans le diversité“) and her Auschwitz prisoner number, which remained tattooed on her arm until her death in 2017. The sword glints briefly in Olivier Dahan’s “Simone: Woman of the Century” and though its symbolism is apt for such a crusading figure, it also reflects the film’s shortcomings: this is a reverential, ceremonial biopic content merely to inscribe Veil’s achievements across the surface of history, ornamenting a remarkable legacy, rather than exploring it.

Elsa Zylberstein, one of the most famous – and bankable — faces of French cinema, known for her Cesar-winning performance in “I’ve Loved You For So Long,” is preparing to emerge as a major film producer.
Having recently set up banners in France and the U.S., Zylberstein is actively developing a raft of films and series, working with the likes of Oscar-winning Syrian filmmaker Feras Fayyad (“The Cave”), Ted Braun (Darfur Now”) and Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton (“The Father”), among others. French pay-tv giant Canal+ went on the offensive at a special event in Paris on Wednesday, promoting its historic role as the biggest supporter of local and international cinema in France and laying out its past track record and future plans.
The roadshow-style conference was part of an operation laying the ground for the launch of a new high-end, cinema-focused channel Canal+ Box Office which was teased at the end of the event.
“2023 will be the most beautiful year for cinema in the history of Canal+. We’ve never held an event like this before devoted only to cinema, but we felt the need to talk about this,” declared Canal+ Group Chairman and CEO Maxime Saada.
The exec said the banner year was due to three factors, topped by the agreement it signed with the French cinema guilds in early 2022, pledging to invest at least €200M (213M) annually in cinema over five years.

On its surface, The Immaculate Room is a contest. A game. If you and your romantic partner can spend fifty days in a stark white room with nothing but a bed, minimalist couch-like ottoman, and bathroom that only allows one contestant at a time, you go home with five million dollars. It seems easy because it is—if you’re only looking at the surface. Peel back the layers of its conceit, however, and you see potential for participants to go stir-crazy with nothing but their own wits to keep them busy. Add public knowledge that the person orchestrating everything is a professor infamous for pricy social experiments that have ended in tragedy; you might think twice about whether the reward truly outweighs the risk.
Kate (Kate Bosworth) never bothered looking that deep. She sees nothing but the opportunity presented as the product of a rough childhood marked by money problems.

This year, Simone turns 20 years old. It’s hard to believe that it has been two decades since this mind-bending thriller was released in theaters. After setting a new record for the most nominations a series has ever received in a single year, “Game of Thrones” dominated the 2019 Primetime Creative Arts Emmys, which were handed out on Sunday evening in downtown Los Angeles.
The final season of the epic HBO series won 10 awards, taking Emmys for casting, music, main-title design, picture editing, sound mixing and sound editing, makeup, costumes, visual effects and stunt coordination — though it was beaten by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for cinematography, “Chernobyl” for production design and “Star Trek: Discovery” for prosthetic makeup.
Jane Lynch won the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the fourth different show for which Lynch has won an Emmy. The show also won the guest-actor award, with Luke Kirby helping shut “Saturday Night Live” out of the guest acting winner’s circle for the first time since 2015.

“Game of Thrones” didn’t break any records during the second night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Sunday, but they gave themselves a leg-up on history. The HBO fantasy series was nominated for 18 awards, and ended up taking home an awe-inspiring 10.
For those keeping track, “Game of Thrones” already owns the record it seeks to achieve, winning 12 Emmy Awards in 2015 for its fifth season and is well on its way to obliterating that award during the Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 22.
Those who suspected that a disappointing final season would dampen the Television Academy’s enthusiasm for the most decorated drama series of all time, were proved wrong yet again after racking up a record 32 overall nominations.

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” made a major splash with a record 32 Emmy nominations in July for its eighth and final season, bringing the show’s ultimate total to 161. One of those 32 bids is for Best One-Hour Single-Camera Cinematography, a category the show has never won. Can it finally do it this year with director of photography Jonathan Freeman, who is nominated for shooting the series finale “The Iron Throne”?
“Thrones” wasn’t able to break into this race until 2013 for its third season, but has since nabbed eight additional noms to become the most nominated show in this category. If anyone can now finally get it across the finish line, it’s Freeman, a three-time Emmy winner for another HBO show, “Boardwalk Empire”, and previous nominee for “Thrones” (in 2014 for the episode “Two Swords”). He’s also won five out of eight times at the American Society of Cinematographer Awards,...

One of the many additions to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s” Emmy nomination tally was Marin Hinkle, who earned her career-first bid in the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category. The veteran performer, who rose to prominence with a recurring role on “Two and a Half Men,” won her first Screen Actors Guild Award prize earlier this year as part of the show’s ensemble. She plays Rose Weissman, a 1950s Manhattan housewife whose daughter (Rachel Brosnahan) is trying her hand at stand-up comedy, much to her chagrin.
For her Emmy submission, Hinkle has chosen the Season 2 opener “Simone.” In this installment, an unhappy Rose abandons her home and moves to Paris, causing her daughter, Midge, and husband, Abe (Tony Shalhoub), to go find her. But she’s excited by her new bohemian lifestyle, and Abe decides to stay behind with her for an extended stay.

The sophomore season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” was a transitional one, with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and her family adjusting to new roles in 1959, and Emmy-nominated costume designer Donna Zakowska altering their wardrobes to suit the moment. In the opener (“Simone”), Rose (Marin Hinkle) ran away to Paris to revisit her bohemian past, and definitely looked the part. And, in the fourth episode (“We’re Going to the Catskills!”), Midge went to the annual summer retreat in the Catskills with an array of comfort clothes, unsure about her commitment to stand-up comedy.
“It’s about the indecisiveness of changing course: still wanting to be a child before making a very big adult decision to impact her whole life,” Zakowska said. Sure enough, Midge can’t even decide what to pack so she takes every outfit. “And the colors and the patterns really counter the heaviness of what was on her mind,...

For two seasons, director of photography M. David Mullen has been responsible for inviting the audience into the world of a housewife-turned-comedian on Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” With often naturally-lit 360-shots, oners and long, wide shots of real locations, he captures the beauty of the somewhat simpler time of 1950s New York. Now, he sees his second consecutive Emmy nomination for cinematography of a one-hour, single-camera program for his work on the second season premiere entitled “Simone.”

It’s not just wax, it’s not just paint. It’s your heart, it’s your soul, it’s everything we do every single day.”
In the TV fields, “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Glow” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” were among the winners.

Last night saw an under the radar precursor give out its prizes, which in turn may have shifted one of the Oscar categories. Yes, Friday evening saw the American Cinema Editors give out their annual Ace Eddie awards. This yearly event usually can clue us in to what the frontrunners for Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards are. That may well be the case again here, though if that’s true, the Academy and its voters are going to be making an usual choice. They already did in terms of their nominees in the category though, so I suppose this is just par for the course… In a bit of a surprise, the award for Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) went to John Ottman for his work on Bohemian Rhapsody. Ottman won in an upset over Barry Alexander Brown for BlacKkKlansman, Jay Cassidy for A Star Is Born, Tom Cross for First Man,...

The first season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” crashed onto Amazon Prime’s shores much like its heroine crashed her first comedy stage. Cruising on a cocktail of ebullience and determination, “Maisel” broke through the otherwise grim boys’ club of Amazon’s original programming to deliver a vision entirely Amy Sherman-Palladino’s own, with all the chatty wit and aggressive quirkiness that implies. Rachel Brosnahan’s deft performance as the titular housewife turned comic ensured that a star was born, while stalwarts like Alex Borstein (as Midge’s blunt manager) and Tony Shalhoub (as Midge’s perpetually moaning father) played backup with skillful ease.
Sherman-Palladino, with producing partner Daniel Palladino, has cultivated a singular aesthetic that can prove divisive. From “Gilmore Girls” to “Maisel,” their protagonists are zealous, headstrong women who often reveal a startling obliviousness to anyone outside their orbit (or tax bracket). Their scripts are astonishingly dense with dialogue,...
