The monster thing is well-made. Or is it?
Otkon1 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Clearly they either captured a real one of these creature dealies, or they spent all their budget on cloning one. Because they obviously didn't pay for a real cast, writer or camera crew.

And for all you gardening enthusiasts, there are NO rakes in this movie.

Where is the story?
omendata6 June 2018
Some nice gore effects and interesting creature (nice breasts , shame about the face lol).

Problem is there is no story to back up the CGI/Special effects and the acting is purest of pants - where did the creature come from, why is it there - duh!!! Without any details its just another formulaeic stalk and slash creature feature movie. Oh and the end of the movie is just awwwwwful!!!!!

When are they going to make a decent horror like with a story and some scares and give us a break from this toxic tosh! It can be done you know; Sam Raimi proved it with DRAG ME TO HELL - We need more Sam Raimi's and less Tom Tits!

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Wrong Medium
atrophic_dwarf23 July 2018
I feel like there are occasional horror films that might make better prose stories than films. "The Rake" is one of them. Character relationships seem important, and the performances are actually pretty decent, but those relationships aren't well developed or really make much sense in the film itself. The deeper psychological issues the film wants to work with don't quite land because the film can't really get beyond the surface. What occurs is a fair to midland character drama with seemingly random additions (again, a novel would allow background to be explored) and a difficult pace. A fairly lackluster ending doesn't do it any good, either: a last showdown between protagonist and monster just gets shunted, which really seems like the filmmakers ran out of money. It's not bad, just...unfinished.

What the heck did I just watch?!
ScotsGirl8428 June 2018
Absolutely horrible! Where the hell is the storyline? This film doesn't explain anything at all. Aside from the gore and cgi which is okay....everything about this film is just garbage! It makes asbolutely no sense at all! Just another pathetic attempt that basically became yet another failed slasher! Don't watch this whatever you do! Complete waste of time!

Don't be fooled by the beginning. The movie makes no sense. nothing adds up. just random characters and an unknown monster with no direct aim or objective!

Tony Walsh does it again - Please stop doing it Tony
iamMarkPrice20 March 2020
Prolific writer, director, producer Tony Walsh shows us once again how not to write a script, and why these three roles need to be three separate people for quality control purposes. Let me state in no uncertain terms, this is not a good movie. It had a $6M budget, there are no excuses for what we got.

The rake tells the story of a brother and sister, with their... other sister? Female friend? Long lost cousin? Figment of their imagination? We never really find out for sure. And you'd best be ok with that because literally every other character has the same treatment, zero introduction let alone any kind of character building.

This may sound like a world shattering flaw in the film, but worry not dear reader because in actual fact the completely inauthentic speech patterns of each character and their interactions will shatter any kind of illusion of world building long before you even realise you were never introduced to them.

Exposition monologues, unexplained aggression, unrealistic reactions, cheesy lines... just really below elementary writing that you might expect from a beginner writer who hasn't yet found their voice. The kind that traditionally was never in a position where they could make a movie until they developed more into their craft.

This was a movie made for the sake of saying the movie was made. A movie that mistakes gore for horror at the expense of any kind of real threat, suspense or audience participation. There is no theme, no message beneath the surface layer, no depth of story. What remains is a shallow film, where you won't really know who anyone is then some random gore take place. Why the random gore takes place? Well, don't worry we're never told that either so at least it's consistent. Don't watch this movie, seriously. It's a waste of your time and a complete insult to your intelligence.

The nightmares never stopped.
nogodnomasters5 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Rake is a Wendigo, however titles with "Wendigo" in them don't do well and who doesn't love a rake killer? The film opens with Ben and Ashley as children watching her parents get killed by one of these things. As adults they are messed up, especially Ashley (Shenae Grimes-Beech). A group of people get to together at the cabin-in-the -woods....with cell phone reception. Ashley starts to see things and Andrew (Joey Bicicchi) has cuticle issues.

The film does build character but runs short on suspense. The killings take place in one quick lump. At 1:14 it could have added some horror build up.

Guide: F-word. Near sex. brief nudity.

Ok I suppose?
theblackleaves9 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So I've been a massive fan of the whole "creepypasta" scene for a loong time. I've written short films with the rake in mind as a monster. Doing so I had to refer back to all the lore built up over the years. I feel like that didn't happen here. I feel as though the writers just kinda got a basic summary of the beast and wrote an idea based on a one paragraph summary. The horror of it does come from the psychological dread brought on but I feel as though they mixed up Slenderman lore and Rake lore. It also just feels so fast paced and sucks at showing characterization well due to this. I don't remmeber any of the characters names in the movie at all. They all feel so flat and one dimensional. This story could have worked better as a foundfootage film. I know. How dare I suggest they go lazier with their production. But seeing what has been made online the foundfootage angle works better for these kinds of monsters. First hand experiences with some real character behind it all. I find it sad that the found footage series made by college students seem better and more compelling than this film and The Slenderman film for that matter. If you don't know much about the rake I suppose it's ok. Had some good effects for the most part and a good atmosphere built. But overall it's a weak adaptation of something that scared the hell out of a lot of people

Laughably Bad
dovahkiinftwmaybe22 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First few minutes of the film is alright, but still not great acting even then. Seriously, the dad couldn't feel the vibrations through the house or even hear her when there was NO AUDIO coming through his headphones? After this, it goes downhill very fast. Bad acting and badly written characters. You supposed to sympathise with the husband or Ashley or who? None of the characters are likeable. The husband is annoying and just seems like a trashy person, the sister and Ashley come off as cold and very rude. The only characters you can somewhat empathize with are Nicole and Ashley and that's because Nicole seems caring and Ashley just seems to have a lot of mental issues. 50 minutes of the film is dedicated to story building that leads no where. You don't end up caring about any of the characters and so their deaths are meaningless. For all the buildup, it's very disappointing when you actually see the Rake. Okay effects but they're not very convincing. Gore is alright, probably the best thing in the movie and the ending is okay. I know it's based off a creepypasta, but the creepypasta itself wasn't that great and never warranted a movie. It's just like the Slenderman movie all over again. Don't go out of your way to watch it.

No one realizes this is based off a game before that creepypasta
coreyphillips-027782 October 2018
Why is everyone giving it so much s*** yeah no story line but try looking stuff up just like slender man the rake came from creepy pasta and just like slender man this was a game as well and the next time a monster comes around make sure to stop it and ask for his back story before it kills you sometimes the monster needs no backstory they are just very unlucky to run into something they do not know or would ever believe is real yes be not be the highest budget film but the charm is not knowing which has always been scary for people critics take it to far these days show this to people in the 50s they would be terrified and think it's a great film but honestly it's hard to please anyone these days you need to look further into a movie before drawing a conclusion and most people don't do that most things to consider the angles the art known as cinematography

Nifty horror monster outing
Woodyanders14 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Siblings Ashley (a fine and affecting performance by Shenae Grimes-Beech) and Ben (a sturdy portrayal by Stephen Brodie) witness the brutal murders of their parents as children. Two decades later, a very troubled Ashley believes that a lethal supernatural creature called the Rake killed her parents and is coming after her next.

Director/co-writer Tony Walsh relates the absorbing story at a steady pace, ably crafts a creepy and unsettling mood, takes time to develop the characters, makes good use of the isolated woodland setting, and delivers a handy helping of bloody gore. The sound acting by the capable cast keeps this movie humming: Rachel Melvin as the sweet Nicole, Joey Bicicchi as the fed up Andrew, Darcy Wood as the perky Michelle, Joe Nunez as the rowdy Jeremy, Joe Mullen as the deranged Jacob Murphy, and Izabella as ill-fated mom Cassie. The monster looks really gnarly and frightening while the surprise grim ending packs a jolting punch. Both Tim Montijo's shivery score and Robert Patrick Stern's sharp widescreen cinematography are up to par. A worthwhile frightfest.

Ultimately Disappointing
olikirmar29 April 2020
The Rake starts off showing shakey writing, but as it develops, it starts to grab your attention. It's predictable and has a head-scratcher of an ending, but it's a harmless venture with some interesting characters and concepts.

I have wasted my time
sadieofiara26 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This was the worst 1 and a half of my life. As a creepypasta fan, I found this pretty bad. First, it doesn't even follow the original story. Second, they can't even get the design right. Also, who the heck is Michelle? What about that one girl who randomly wound up dead? The storyline was boring. The characters were empty vessels. This movie was also unnecessarily gory. But hey. At least I got to watch it for free. Sony. Stop making horror movies.

A bit muddled but still somewhat creepy movie
jmbovan-47-1601739 August 2020
This is an interesting folklore monster to base a film, and for that the movie has positive elements. The muddled plot of the script undoes some of this, leaving the eventual outcome somewhat dull given the lack of effective character development allowed by the script. Also, some of the rather flat and cringe inducing characters don't help with connection to the underlying horror of the general film concept. Too bad as there is something here that could have become a better indie horror film.

These Scars Are A Testament To My Transformation
wandernn1-81-68327426 May 2020
+1 Star for the Opening Hook. I liked it! No where to go but up, right????

-1 Star for over 2/3 of the way through the movie and still really not much of a clue as to what is going on. This could be because I'm dumb or because the movie is just not very well done. Either way that's minus a star.

-1 Star for The Ending. Really the movie ended and I failed to get an overall point.

But the 'story' or lack thereof held me to the end! Lots of gore and creepy moments made it watchable for me! But nothing to give it more than a subpar rating here.

Don't bother!
nikki-279022 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Incredibly stupid and absolutely no story here to tell why anything is happening. But the ending is the worst. They make women so stupid. If your boyfriend is turning into a beast right before your eyes and you look at him and cry for 5 minutes instead of getting up and running the hell out of the house, you are way beyond stupid!

Has literally nothing to do with The Rake, and is pretty much just dialogue with a bit of over the top gore.
aidansamuelpike22 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm quite the fan of creepypastas and cryptids and all that, The Rake being one of my favourites, although this move just puts it to shame. The acting is very subpar, the story...well, I'm pretty sure there isn't one, and I'm not sure this movie even has anything to do with The Rake.

Also, don't go thinking "Oh I should go watch the movie!", because I'll give you a summary in a couple minutes, and you can save 80 minutes of your life.

A little information: The Rake is one of the first cryptids to be created, and is described as a skinny, humanlike creature which walks on four legs, despite being at least 6 feet tall, that is if it weren't so hunched when it is upright. It has grey skin and black pits for eyes, and is overall...harmless, at least to some extent. Most encounters with it involve it going into people's bedrooms, and looking at them, sometimes even talking to them. The person is then traumatised and scared for their life, some even committing suicide due to this.

In the movie 'The Rake', the creature does not once go on all fours, looks more fat than skinny, and...infects/possesses people?

The movie starts with an introduction lasting around 10 to 15 minutes, and this is the only good part of the movie. It features a family of four, the father being someone who is investigating a serial killer who has been possessed by The Rake. The killer then enters the house and kills both the parents with a sharp-nailed, severed finger, before slitting his own throat with it in front of the children (Ben and Ashley).

Fast forward 20 years and the two kids are grown up and on meds and traumatised, hallucinating and hearing The Rake when it isn't there, despite...not having actually seen the thing. They also apparently have another sister, which we just have to accept. This actually kind of makes sense though when compared to some of the other stuff that happens in this movie. She and her husband (Who for some reason dislikes Ashley because she can't control her own trauma, and yet likes Ben despite him going through the exact same stuff) invite Ben, Ashley, and two other completely irrelevant characters, who we don't get told anything about, over to their new house in the woods.

The move then wastes your time with pointless worldbuilding until the last 10 or so minutes. This middle section consists of Ashley having panic attacks and being shouted at. Ashley then runs into the forest and sees...herself...but in a smoke machine in the middle of some very not smoky or foggy woods, and follows it to see The Rake.

Now, the last 10 minutes. This is basically just a bloodbath. Suddenly they just decide that it's time for everyone to die. This part makes absolutely no sense, and has no suspense or foreshadowing moments leading up to it. And because of terrible writing and lackluster delivery of it, the movie hasn't given you a single character to get attached to to relate to, and so you feel no sorrow seeing everyone die, only feeling uncomfortable at how much gore there suddenly is. Despite this, this is probably the best bit of the movie, with somewhat decent CGI and blood.

Put simply: A & B's sister's husband goes to the basement, finds his wine bottles broken, and then get stabbed by The Rake and dies. Ben, his sister, and one of the two pointless characters (The other is bust vomiting at a corpse in a barn, no idea whether he lives or not) are in a car because Ben fainted or something. They return to the house, and the pointless character goes to the garage alone to make a call and dies. The other two find the husband's body and then find the pointless character's body. Ben grabs a gun, and shoots Ashley as she enters the house. He then rips his eyes out, slits is throat and dies. But he's apparently alive due to a monster in him, who comes out of his body and then just stands in front of A & B's sister...menacingly. Cut to the credits.

Overall, this movie is terribly done. Then put little effort into creating likeable characters, building and interesting world, building suspense, and horror in general. The movie has almost nothing to do with The Rake, despite the movie claiming to be based off of the original creepypasta, and only shows the creature they claim to be The Rake during the last 10 to 15 minutes of the film, in which it shows up and kills a few people...before just disappearing.

I must admit, maybe my thoughts on this movie would be a little better if I hasn't gone in specifically to see The Rake. Maybe if they'd made it an original monster, it could've worked out better. Although that can't change the fact that the writing is awful, with the execution of it being just as bad, if not worse.

(Note: Maybe this does relate to the real Rake more than I think, so sorry about that. It's been a little while since I looked at those old creepypastas.)

Pretty Okay
masshysteria-093497 October 2019
For what it is, a low budget slasher film based on an internet urban legend, it could've been a lot worse. Honestly, it's good enough that I would watch it again if I was bored and it was all I had. All I can really say is it did better than certain "creepypasta" films. You know you're thinking what I'm thinking.

Totally Perplexing
selfdestructo5 May 2023
The Rake ranks among the most inept horror movies I've ever seen. There were entire chunks of dialogue (as well as everything that was on the tape in the movie) that are simply inaudible. There are no subtitles. So I'm sure I missed some key plot points about the creature and the scarred guy. Characters are introduced in this movie with ZERO context or background information.

The filmmakers have chosen to leave you with the puzzle of figuring out who is who, who is related to who (seemingly, the brother from the introduction is married to his sister's sister. WTF), and what the hell they're all doing at this house. I saw it as a plot convenience so The Rake could kill everyone in one place, probably the one place their budget would allow.

I believe I saw THREE writers credited for this crap. I was SHOCKED to see someone credited as Music Composer. This soundtrack is straight out of public domain, and old sound effects CD's. I don't think anyone "composed" anything. Oh, they throw in some pretty unpleasant gore, which did not sway my opinion of this film. The only positive thing I can say about this movie is that they kept it mercifully short, clocking in at 78 minutes. Zero stars (imdb makes me give it one).

It had potential
katja_jacobsen13 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just so confused. Such a weird movie, that doesn't make any sense and not the best actors which cuts it down as well. My biggest question is.. WHO is the Rake? Or what is the Rake and why is it called the rake? I just don't get it. Is it a demon or a moster and why is it there? If you heard about the history of the rake that would definitely make it better and a different story. Like the title says, it had potential, but it didn't go the right way

Have I seen worse? Sure, but this is definitely in my top 10
