You can finally say it again: GROOVY!
hitman_198020 November 2016
This episode is one of the best of the series. After a bizarre start, season 2 became more and more entertaining with each episode, with the producers paying more attention to delivering a clever story rather than only splashing blood around. Sure, there still are some scenes that will definitely pi$$ you off (pun intended, you'll get it after watching this one), but the rest more than makes up for these. Ash benefits of some iconic shots in this particular episode but the most fun part was the fact that the script manages to keep you guessing and the showdown is really satisfying. So far, this was the season's climax on every aspect, and if they somehow find a way to do even better than that with the remaining episodes there's only one word to describe this second season: groovy!

Ashy Slashy

Warning: Spoilers
A bit more gory than the last episode, some characters, I'm started to like are killed off and even a main character Pablo, which I'm sure it's temporary. Ash is pretty badass until the 'it's all part of my plan'. I absolutely love the puppet Ash, he's very hilarious, it's like Ash and Chucky put together, it's the highlight of this episode for me.

All in all, this episode is a one step forward and two step backwards, 'cause they get rid of Baal but Pablo is dead, so they're going to have to find a way to bring him back I'm sure.

Always bring a gun to a puppet fight

Warning: Spoilers
It says a lot about the episode that the one that gets the good scenes, the good fights, the good dialogue and quotes is Kelly, who carries the show on her shoulders in this episode that is a clear improvement over the last ones. Ash, curiously, is left back to the shadows (literally), after having been brainwashed by Baal.

Kelly and her team go to the hospital to get Baal and send it back to wherever it came from. Cue lots of shooting, Lacey a little bit more aggressive then she used to be, especially towards her father, Pablo worrying a lot, and Kelly being Ash thirty years ago. We got her fighting, her fighting against herself in a clear homage of Ash vs Own Hand, and her being the star of the show. Kudos to DeLorenzo for doing an amazing job at it and making the viewer forget about Campbell's Ash for a little bit. Ash, by the way, goes around with his chainsaw menacing people and being dead-looking for the whole episode.

The pace of the show is improved, the camera work, even if not particularly original, good enough, the acting seems a little bit more focused, and the plot... well, develops. After the almost snoring inducing previous one, "Ashy Slashy" gives some life to the show.

Not great but still better than the last episode.

Baal has convinced Ash that he must destroy the Necronomicon, meaning that Pablo, now merged with the book, is in danger of being chainsawed by his friend.

Tony Tilse has directed my favourite episodes of Season 1 and 2, but even he cannot do much with a script that largely consists of the characters wandering through the darkened corridors of an abandoned asylum. A couple of decent gore effects punctuate the monotony, but this is definitely the weakest of Tilse's episodes thus far.

Best moments: Sheriff Emery has his noggin torn off. Kelly shoots the head off a deadite (I won't tell you who has been turned... that would spoil the fun), and there's a really graphic death for one of the major characters at the end.

Worst scenes: all of those featuring characters creeping round the asylum in the dark, and the silly fight between Kelly and a felt puppet.

A better episode than the last one, although still not fantastic. At least the other characters show up to prowl around the asylum and fight monsters. There's one good death scene here and a twist at the climax to keep you watching. The puppet stuff is ridiculous.
