Season Two Review
southdavid14 January 2020
As a long-time fan of "The Evil Dead" I was a totally mark for the first season of "Ash Vs. Evil Dead". It was a fantastic, authentic continuation of the story - with great additions, physical effects and buckets of gore. The second season, is frankly, more of the same, and all the better for it.

Having settled for a life in Jacksonville away from the worries of deadites, Ash (Bruce Campbell) is living his best life. Kelly (Dana Delorenzo) and Pablo (Ray Santiago) are with him, though Pablo can't shake the memories of his time connected to the Necronomicon. Ruby (Lucy Lawless) though, loses control over her murderous offspring and much to her chagrin realises that she needs Ash's help to defeat them.

So yes. Again the show is a complete blast. Full of the OTT violence and practical effects that the films pioneered and the show continues. It's total fan service, bringing back Ellen Sandweiss, Ted Raimi, even managing to find another way to get back to the cabin during this run. I love that each episode is a little over half an hour, rather than the traditional 42 or so - that meant I could binge the season over a couple of nights.

What can I say, if you're not a fan - this isn't going to convert you, but I was and am and know I still have the third and final season to look forward too.

The trouble with time travel.

Warning: Spoilers
The fan service continues in this final episode of season 2, starting with Ash battling deadite Henrietta in the cellar. As in Evil Dead II, Henrietta is a hideous, bloated, naked creature whose neck distends and head turns into a skull. The scene is played for laughs as Ash is forced to suck on Henrietta's lactating breast and get his foot stuck when he kicks her in the vagina. Then he saws her head off.

This episode also sees Ruby coming face to face with her evil earlier self, Baal making an unexpected appearance, a fist fight between Ash and Baal, more creepy kids, a chainsaw duel, and Pablo coming back to life. At least one major character dies (in a manner of speaking) and Ash defeats Ball by slicing him with his own talon. The confusing ending sees Ash and his pals back in the 21st century (how did they return? I must have missed that) being celebrated as a hero by the people of Elk Grove (which doesn't make any sense if you think about it, such are the complications of meddling with history).

6.5/10, rounded up to 7 for IMDb - entertaining throughout, but far from the best this season has to offer.

Very Entertaining but lots of plot holes

Warning: Spoilers
It was an entertaining episode, however it makes no sense. Seasons 1 and 2 should have been prevented because of the ending, same with the movies, and everyone who died should be alive. So, why does everyone remember it and in the future the only thing that is different is that Pablo is alive and the evil is gone?

Does the job

Warning: Spoilers
The last episode and it's pretty much wall-to-wall action so plenty to enjoy and take your mind off the nonsensical bits. Basically it comes down to a demon fight with Ash with lots of other little references and asides along the way. A fitting close for this series and we'll see where season three goes.

Entertaining, but makes no sense

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a really really big fan of Ash vs Evil Dead (and Evil Dead in general). I've loved and enjoyed every single episode of both seasons so far. But this last episode of season 2? It's kinda hard for me to love, because it has a lot of problems.

The previous episode when they travelled back in time suggested they would not ultimately change anything, just thinking they do - but go by the logic of the Terminator movies (minus Genisys) with that they travel back and make what happens in the future end up happening. Yet, this episode makes them change everything. They burn down the freaking cabin and seemingly prevents movies 1-3 and the entire season 1 and all of season 2 of Ash vs Evil Dead up until this point from happening.

Except... it doesn't? Pablo didn't seem to be resurrected from the time travelling as much as with them destroying the Necronomicon, and Ash's dad is still dead, and so are Kelly and Chet and old Ruby. And the town's people still know what happened, and that Ash saved them? But at the same time, Ash's hand grew back when they altered the past (and got cut off again), and the cabin burned down.

Defenders of the episode and developers tell us to "not think about it", and that "time travelling is always confusing". But, at least other time travel stories let us know what current present time the characters live in after altering things. This one doesn't even bother with that.

And what makes it worse to me is that this is a big elephant in the room the developers refuse addressing. I don't even know yet if season 3 will fix this somehow and explain to us what's going on, but I sure do hope so.

The episode is still entertaining, but it really seriously lacks the substance needed. It's just a mess.

Hey, I love me too!

If the last episode of season 1 was a letdown, this is way more of a letdown than that episode ever was.

"Second Coming" keeps the story of the team in the 80s trying to bring Pablo back... and then makes no sense at all. The plot is thrown out of the window (maybe the deadites have it?) and the episode just offers thirty minutes of mindless (and without much sense, and pointless) action, with just a couple of mildly funny quotes and average banter between our characters. Ash (and the rest) fighting the same enemies constantly has become a little bit tiring (there is little originality in the situations or in the locations where the action takes place) and the episode does little to change our perceptions. A plot should not trip over its own logic, but "Ash vs Evil Dead" succeeds in doing that constantly.

A couple of moments will remind the viewer what Ash is all about, but in general, this second season of "Ash vs Evil Dead" has been a disappointment, and this last episode the clearest example.
