Chess is ruthless: you’ve got to be prepared to kill people – Nigel Short
That quote opens the new Aussie thriller Kane, the camera focusing on Abe playing a game. In voiceover Abe’s driver, Benny tells us a few things. Abe is an old-school gangster, all about loyalty and honour. He also has dissociative identity disorder more commonly known as multiple personalities, and as he’ll mention shortly, he’s off his meds. He also tells us that Abe’s opponent is Frankie, a former member of his outfit who is now his rival for control of the city’s underworld. A rivalry that has turned bloody

A bloodied man makes his way down a Los Angeles street while a police helicopter flies overhead looking for him. This is Travis (Dade Elza; You Can’t Have It) he’s armed, dangerous and heading towards Melrose Avenue. Which is where he ducks into the first open building he finds, the art gallery at 86 Melrose Avenue and takes everyone hostage. And then the flashbacks begin.
We get a quick scene of the gallery’s two very obviously gay owners bickering over the company’s finances. Then we go to Travis’ house where his wife Madeline is having dinner with an old friend, Dallas (Jake Red; Devil’s Junction: Handy Dandy’s Revenge). An argument between the two men turns deadly and Travis goes on the run.

Ming Cho Lee, an innovative and influential scenic designer whose career of more than 60 years included unforgettable creations for Broadway, Off Broadway, regional theater, opera and dance, died Oct. 23. He was 90.
A cornerstone of the Yale School of Drama for 48 years beginning in 1969, Lee taught and mentored generations of students who would take their own places on Broadway. According to the school, Lee taught and mentored more than 300 designers by the time he retired in 2017.
Clint Ramos, a Tony-winning costume and set designer, remembered Lee by noting, “Because you were — we are.”
Jeremy O. Harris, author of Broadway’s Slave Play, tweeted about Lee, “one of the great gifts of my 3 years at Yale was watching you do Saturday crits at a full 88 years of age. Even after seeing 100s of thousands of design ideas in your life you treated these new ones with passion and reverence for the form.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is stepping back into the shoes of her cunning Cruel Intentions villain Kathryn Merteuil for one special cause: to tell audience members to turn off their cell phones.
The 40-year-old actress has recorded the pre-show announcement for Off-Broadway’s Cruel Intentions: The ’90s Musical Experience — the sly send-up of Roger Kumble’s 1999 teen classic that’s now playing at New York City’s (le) Poisson Rouge.

A nasty little piece of work that surprises with both its topicality and incisiveness, Happy Hunting unfailingly reminds us about the social problems we try to ignore that just won’t go away. Violent crime, drug trafficking, addiction and homelessness are just a few of the issues that loom large in Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson’s crafty debut feature, but perhaps most surprisingly, this turns out to be a darkly satiric thriller rather than a boring, moralizing drama. Without much marketing muscle, it’s not likely to be widely seen in theaters, but a broader audience surely awaits on streaming platforms.

Tagline: "Run for Your Life." A trailer for the thriller Happy Hunting came out this week. The film takes place in Bedford Flats. Here, vagrants and drifters are rounded up, for a chase in the desert. Happy Hunting was developed by directors Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson. Somewhat reminiscent of 1991's Surviving the Game, with Ice-t, this latest film is set to release late in September. The film has already shown at a couple of film festivals, including Glasgow's Fright Fest. Now, a preview for the film's theatrical launch is hosted here. The trailer shows Warren (Martin Dingle Wall) alone in Bedford. He is captured and driven out into the desert. Here, he is grouped with a few other people. Meanwhile, a squad of human hunters are getting ready for murder. And with nowhere to hide in the desert, it is unlikely that anyone will survive. Vertical Entertainment is handling the film's launch.

"The rules are simple: you run, we hunt you!" Vertical Ent. has debuted an official trailer for an indie action horror titled Happy Hunting, which is basically a brand new take on "The Most Dangerous Game". The description only explains that an alcoholic drifter becomes the target of a "deranged sporting event" but it's clear from the title and the trailer that it's obviously about a bunch of rednecks hunting people in a desert town. The film stars Martin Dingle Wall, Ken Lally, and Kenny Wormald. There's a few cool shots in this trailer, mainly the silhouette shots. Other than that, I'm not sure if this going to be entertaining or just sickening to watch. This footage makes it seem like the latter. If any of this interests you, then check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Joe Dietsch & Louie Gibson's Happy Hunting, from YouTube: An alcoholic...

Aussie actor Martin Dingle Wall has a long list of local credits, having appeared in 'Home and Away', 'All Saints', 'Satisfaction', 'Underbelly', 'Rescue Special Ops' and 2015 feature 'Strangerland'.
Dingle Wall has returned to Oz from La, where he's lived for the past four years, to promote 'All That Jam', a rom-com shot in Moscow for which the actor had to learn Russian.—.only days before the shoot began. The feature screened in Sydney last week as part of The Russian Resurrection Film Festival.
Next year Dingle Wall stars with Olga Kurylenko and Antonio Banderas in 'Salty', which has been drumming up interest at Afm. He also plays the lead role in indie horror feature 'Happy Hunting', co-directed by Louie Gibson, son of Mel.
How did All That Jam come to you?
