Tape 1, Side A (#1.1)
ComedyFan20105 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am not exactly the target audience so I wasn't planning to watch. But then the curiosity increased and I decided to check it out.

And I must say it seems like a good beginning of the show. Of course since I am not a teenagers some things that are said or how it is presented make me roll my eyes. But I remember those times so it seems realistic enough and definitely well written.

The whole idea is already catching. Now I want to go on and watch the next episode and I want to watch it until the end so that I get the answers to the questions.

The first side of the first tape was a pretty common story about a girl having rumors spread about her. Brandon Flynn who plays Justin did a good job in it.

Well let's turn the tape.

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers ahead.

I recommend you to watch this. I haven't read the book and even reviews. So watched first episode with a fresh mind.

A handsome nerd clay couldn't get over with the Suicide of his friend Hannah. He got a parcel of cassettes recorded by her. She gives reasons to her suicide in 13 different people/versions/reasons which we don't no yet.

+Performance +Setup +Engaging +Heart wrenching in a way

Writers trying to tell make us feel the vulnerability of an innocent girl. Plot sets the premise and it's interesting. We would definitely crave for next episode

Not original, but great nonetheless..

Warning: Spoilers
A note to adults in the audience: "13 Reasons Why" is not Netflix's next "Stranger Things."

Based on Jay Asher's 2007 novel of the same title, the series, available Friday, should be of interest mainly to the same age group that put the book on the children's and young-adult best-seller lists. It's unlikely to cross over to their parents.

In tone and style, it resembles a more serious, grimmer cousin of Freeform (formerly ABC Family) series like "Pretty Little Liars" and "Twisted." Like them, it literalizes the idea that teenage life is a mystery, one that adults can't hope to solve.

Young viewers may find the combination of thriller and morbid teenage melodrama in "13 Reasons Why" addictive, though parents should be aware that it contains startlingly naturalistic depictions of rape and suicide. The rest of us won't have as much patience for the show's excessively convoluted, repetitive and unlikely story, or for the narrative gimmick reflected in its title.

The action begins a few weeks after the death of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), a junior at a suburban high school. Clay (Dylan Minnette), a socially awkward classmate who had a crush on her, receives a shoe box full of vintage cassette tapes (Maxell 60s, if you're a nostalgist). Overall plot was good and paced.. 9.0/10

Any teen agers out there reading this

I know this is for reviews but I am hoping that someone in the age group that this is targeted at read this. I.lost 2 nephews 2 brothers before they even finished high school they committed suicide or so we think. (it was a small town , a well known family , so the police did little mainly because they didn't want to). And the boys did it at 2 different times. so just in time for us to finally start seeing the light of our pain when Joshua did it Justin turn around and started it all over again. I have had dialogue with many young adults since then and I decided to open this up I wanted to see if maybe I'm right about how I would handle this.

When hannah's photo was sent to everyone at her school how painful was that? You would think that somebody besides clay would have reacted very strongly to what those boys did to her rather then blame her for the outcome. I guess it's gonna go on forever. But I asked what would have happened if she would have used the words on the tape and texted that to everyone that got those pictures. She should have told that horrible kid "that was my first kiss and you ruined it . Something that is part of a persons memory they will always think about fondly you turned into a nightmare. it was just a kiss for me but for you it looks like a fabrication of something else."

They said that definitely would have redirected their attention away from Hannah , but they followed up with "wow that would have been great but we just don't think like that on the fly." Which again leads me to give the advice of maybe you should sit back and think before you start texting stuff period

Good Start

Its bane and boon is- its way too truthful to its adaptation.

I read 'Thirteen Reasons Why' five months back and I really enjoyed it- the concept of our little deeds really influencing someone to suicide was mind-blowing. Then the TV show happened and with a lot of hype. So I finally decide to check this aware that I will not be disappointed and I wasn't.

13 Reasons Why makes a familiar but still pleasing pilot, much thanks to its talented cast that worked very well especially the two leads Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford who deliver great performances especially the latter who gets into the skin of her character- that was the Hannah we wanted for 13 Reasons Why.

While the plot seems familiar since I am already acquainted with the book but impressively the makers and writers do add their own perspectives to make the story more relatable to its current audience- the dialogues that have Google maps in their context that wasn't quite a thing back in 2007 was really witty.

Overall liked it- the theme of the episode was well delivered.

Hannah may be dead, but that isn't the end of her story
AndrewCJordan29 February 2024
Tape 1, Side a (2017)

Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) is dead. In fact, she killed herself. But that doesn't mean her story is over. Before her suicide, she recorded a series of tapes (13 sides in all) meant for 13 people who played some part in her decision to end her life. We follow one of those 13 people, Clay (played by Dylan Minnette). In the first episode, we listen to the first side, and the depictions of the scenario on said side. Hannah has her first kiss with a fellow student named Justin Foley (played by Brandon Flynn), but what should've been a wonderful moment for her becomes a nightmare.

Really wonderful acting from the cast, especially from Minnette, which definitely makes this show so great.

Please Be Kind and Understanding!

Warning: Spoilers
Hannah Baker - a girl who resembles a teen Kate Winslet and Mrs. Cooper in Riverdale, combined - tells her life before suicide through tapes. The modern high school vibes and experiences are captured - I recall rumours and gossip that share similar events. I hope these episodes contribute to a more positive high school environment and teens understanding better how their individual actions add to the overall high school experience.
