The boy and girl detectives who grew up to be ... detectives

Warning: Spoilers
A woman is following a man through Montréal, and makes a note as he enters a building. A man is following the woman, and when she, aware of his presence, ducks into a side street, the man draws a gun and shoots at her. She had been expecting this, and takes evasive action just in time.

Later, in an incident that may or may not be related, a man enters a house, aware that another man is following him, and picks up the telephone to call the police. He has only uttered a few words by the time his pursuer also enters the house and shoots him dead. As we move forward in time, and Murdoch has arrived to begin enquiries, the same woman enters. We learn she is Freddy Pink, and knows Billy Murdoch from the days when they were both Governor-General Young Scholars together. She is now a private investigator, and she tells Murdoch that the dead man is Hamish McTavish, another of the seven GGYS from their year, 1875. She tells Murdoch that she was shot at a week previously, and that someone is trying to kill them all. She believes that it is connected to something they found on camp at Algonquin in 1875.

In flashback, we see how a man's body was discovered in a river. He was Glenn Singer, and he had been hit over the head. The young William Murdoch and Freddy Pink had searched for clues, finding the likely murder weapon and some mysterious symbols cut into a tree trunk. The camp leader recognises them as Indian tracking symbols, and the local Constable, Constable Dobson knows of an Indian living nearby: Joe Huggins.

In the present, we learn that Joe Huggins was convicted of killing Singer, and has only just been released after 25 years in jail. We also learn that Dr Ogden's assistant, Rebecca James, is not going to be confirmed in post, by Mr Richmond, Dr Ogden's Boss, apparently because of her lack of suitable qualifications, despite her year's training, not to mention Dr Ogden's confidence in her. The four remaining GGYS of 1875, Freddy, William, Edwin Clarke and Jacques Devereaux are all reunited at Jacques' Lodge, formerly the residence of Mr Singer.

Returning to the scene of the 1875 crime, Murdoch notices that the Indian tracking symbols are still visible on the tree, and scouting around he discovers similar marks on several trees and hypothesises that together the marks may point to something else. Following through leads Murdoch to a concealed hiding place, in which he finds a gold coin.

Has Murdoch now found the reason behind the 1875 murder? What dangers await the class of 1875 in the present? What can Dr Ogden do to save her assistant?

This episode is enjoyable not only for the mystery at its heart, but also for what it tells us about Murdoch's past, and, perhaps, his future.
