Here Come the Hillbillies

I agree that this one was really convoluted. First of all, the ease with which Red gets abducted is a bit of a stretch. While Liz is in the washroom, Red disappears and ends up in the wood with the Kings of the Highway, four knuckleheads who don't know what they've gotten into. But their appearance throws Red's and Elizabeth's plans off, as she must search for him and then initiate a rescue. Meanwhile, Tom and the gang have the bad guy and are banking on him clearing Liz's name. Can we even begin to believe this will happen when he is given the opportunity. We also find out that Charlene had an affair while hubby was sick. It was a very odd episode with a huge question at the end.

"nuttier than a bag of cashews" (dialog)
A_Different_Drummer22 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For those that just joined us from another planet, the idiomatic expression is not "nuttier than a bag of cashews" (which was a line of dialog in this episode to describe the female kidnapper) but "crazier than a bag of d**ks" which presumably still is worthy of censorship even in these laissez-faire times.

Speaking of crazy, in the last decade a new development in TV plotting has emerged -- often credited to JJ ABRAMS for bizarre twists in his show ALIAS -- where, not only are traditional arcs inverted or destroyed as the show progresses -- but bizarre complications are tossed in for good measure. The proverbial "spanner in the works." And this episode is a showcase for spanners.

We have a "random" kidnapping of one of the most dangerous men alive; we have Harold being told under the most awkward circumstances that his wife had an affair; we see before our eyes one of the last honest government law officials murdered; we learn more about Ressler's past than (frankly) we wanted to; and (my favorite) much of this is set in motion because Aram's unrequited love for agent Navabi is thrown back in his face....

And (in a show that already has too many mysteries) some mysterious artifact which "could have" exonerated Liz (played by a clearly pregnant Megan Boone) is instead used to ransom Red...?

And Liz may or may not have finally been captured by Ressler...?

Plus a chase in a subway tunnel which, after all the above, fairly defines the term "gratuitous."

Now if this were a traditional review, this would be the place where I tell everyone how clever and exhilarating it all is.

But I am not a traditional reviewer, never have been, and I will tell instead you that this is pushing the limits of how much you can throw at a viewer in one episode and expect to keep that viewer authentically engaged.

I realize (coincidence!) that this series benefits from the input of J.R Orci (an Abrams alumnus) -- which makes the craziness all the more expected -- but I say again, if there is a limit for balls in the air, this episode has reached it.

Conclusion: unless you are an ADD sufferer, this episode is overkill both literally and figuratively.

Worst one this far
Imperiously23 December 2020
This episode reminded me of the "Fly" episode on Breaking bad. The whole plot was almost flawless in coherence and interest this far. I'm afraid the writers messed this episode up, and it will inevitably influance the following story. It's so far below the show's standards to me, it let me down. I'll see how they recover.

Good Lord
frankelee5 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A random gang of kidnapping yokels grabs Reddington from a gas station, in the most unnecessary discursion plot ever conceived of by man. This show is always bat---- insane, but I really where did they come up with this bizarre idea. Probably that's what everyone in Hollywood believes the middle of the country is like.

And then Cooper and Tom are on the dumbest action plot where assassins are after them as they try to keep a Russian assassin alive. It's just terrible.

And then there's a shadow government who apparently were revealed but nobody cared, and they murder government officials and FBI agents and nobody cares either, or notices. It's all quite pointless.

And then Liz is arrested. And the shadow government moves to eliminate her, because they can still operate in the open despite being revealed. Because nothing matters.
