A Dog Looking for a Bone.
nogodnomasters8 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Seven minutes into the film I knew the whole plot. Preacher gets killed by the bad guys who run the town while writing a letter to his brother. We then see a US Marshal riding into town. IT'S HIS BROTHER! Wow! Didn't see that coming or the school teacher he meets. Okay what I really didn't see coming was that the Marshal had the letter that got burned up in the fire the night his brother died. Toss in a phrase like Quantrill Raiders and a mayor who wears a top hat, has a cane, and walks around like Silas Barnaby and you have a pretty cliché filled tale. Some of the dialogue I liked, but it was far from carrying the film.

No swearing sex or nudity.

This movie is the worst one I ever watched in Hollywood. I felt like I wasted my time by waiting its climax. There is nothing, you can enjoy in this movie except background score...

See my Hickok review - Same applies
omendata11 December 2017
Watched the equally dire Hickock movie last night and another howler tonight.

Despite the excellent Stephen Lang being in it, he couldn't save the farcically bad acting of the rest of the cast , the dire story and the whole thing in general.

As someone else watching at the time pointed out - the characters all look clean and tidy whereas real westerns like Pale Rider they actually looked dirty, unshaven, wretched and like a real cowboy back then would probably look like - In all these modern cowboy movies the art is lost and its all full of pretty boys like Hemsworth with their six packs , tans and glamour boy antics - as my girlfriend often says- "where are all the real men these days"? - As i say , well you women ushered in the metrosexual and are now complaining that modern men have no balls so its actually your fault lol Feminism eh doesn't really know what it wants - like most women really but I digress...

Seriously though if you want a decent western you will have to look into a back catalogue of 20 years ago as I haven't seen anything to rival the WILD BUNCH or any of Clint Eastwoods epic westerns!

Some films are so bad they are good; this isn't one of them
tom_sykes-5208823 September 2017
Cowboy cliché after cowboy cliché. The lead is a 3 rd rate Clint Eastwood and ever other character, from the saloon whore with a heart of gold to the wicked black hearted mayor, has less life than the stage props. How many farm girls in the West fed chickens in full make and a clean dress?

Mediocre Acting, Horrible Screenplay
timkimturner29 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The screenplay for this movie is slow, ridiculous and stupid. Many things are not plausible, especially at the end (spoiler alert, if you can spoil THIS movie) where a wooden cross 10 feet up falls over to impale the bad guy in the chest, right side up. Then the good guy says "thank you" to his dead preacher brother. Wow.

There is some good acting by a couple of actors, but unfortunately, the dialogue is dumb.

I watch anything, even this movie
luisfveloz15 October 2017
When they tell me, a movie is bad, i think to myself "Let's see how bad it really is"... Well if there is "A" class Actors there should be a "A" class movies, this is not one of them. With the exception of Stephen Lang, the acting is awful, also it is even harder to believe if the actresses look with so much work done on their faces, and the hair cuts and costumes look new, freshly done, freshly ironed, so clean, so neat, it seems more like a Hollywood costume party than a old western story, you won't believe any of the actors everything looks staged, the photography didn't take advantage of the lighting. If you are like me I know you will watch it, but you've been warned. This movie has the acting, costumes and photography of a Porn.

How bad is bad?
pathopperlpc21 October 2017
I kept asking myself, "Is this a comedy?" No, a comedy would be more entertaining. I had to conclude this was not an attempt at parody. I am thinking that the people responsible for this unbelievably ridiculous, half-baked insult to the cinematic arts were actually serious. I'm sure they were junior high school students with a lot of money. The characters are thin, stereotypical shadows of archetypal heroes and villains and damsels in distress. The sophomoric story and never developed plot will leave you embarrassed for the poor souls whose names appear in the credits. The scenery was pretty good, though.

Find better things to do with your life.

I thought that the day of the good western was still around the corner this mess proves that its not around the corner nor is it anywhere is sight. How it took a bunch of people to write this I have no idea it names three and tells you there may be more guilty of inflicting this on the viewing public.I on't spoil the ending because thats the best part (when the finishing credits roll by) picture a cowboy on a horse we are to believe he has come a long way looking at the absence of any real dust, then the fact he has no bed roll. (the saddle bags seem to come and go ) but as far as having anything to cook with,to sleep on or at some time change a shirt which he does ther is nothing to sustain him come forward a little (that's if you haven't turned it off like i should have)he is asked by the girl (there is always a girl) where is is spending the night to which he answers I will sleep out(what on?)still no food still no blankets cooking gear man this cowboy is tough the town is also a classic there are so many people walking back a forth carts coming down the street its one busy little place in the part of where you and I read the goofs ther is something about the church one better than the one mentioned is that the villains are only a few steps away when the church caves in you would not want to go there on a Sunday with the candles lit. Look if you want excitement don't pick this shocker try an o;d episode of Rawhide.

If you say it's Bad, then you don't how really bad means, man
MovieIQTest18 November 2017
Gee, I saw four guys, four writers wrote this screenplay, at first I thought it would be good since there were four guys sat together to patch up all the illogical holes for each other. But unfortunately, they all turned out to be morons and certified by this lousy movie.

The reverend/preacher wrote a letter to his brother in the church, but before he got the chance to send it out, not by email or priority mail or express mail or registered mail, he was killed and then burnt to death with the church, including the desk he wrote that letter, which he put inside when a barmaid came to him seeking for help.

Funny thing is later when his veteran brother came to town seeking him out, all he could find was a burn-down church site. Miraculously, the woman who took him to his brother's burial site took out that letter his preacher brother never got the chance to mail to him. The whole church was gone, the preacher brother was burnt to death, might just some ashes left later for burial, everything was burnt and gone, yet the un-mailed letter miraculously survived.

Lousy movie with bad screenplay, bad directing, bad acting, bad....nothing is good. Don't even think about watching it, just don't bother, man.

YOU THINK I AM THAT STUPID LIKE YOU FOUR GUYS, THE DIRECTOR AND THE WHOLE PRODUCTION GROUP?!!! Jesus.....

Not bad, but should have been a TV movie
DJNormand28 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this strictly due to the fact that former Originals co-star Nathan Parsons was the actual star and of course, Jackson Rathbone, from the Twilight films was also in it.

I think Parsons did a fine job portraying a U.S. Marshall. But we're not talking Tombstone here. It was better than mediocre with a solid story that was well driven by a fairly good cast, although they were mostly unfamiliar faces except for Stephen Lang and Ms. Lesley Anne Down.

I remember Lang from years ago on television back in the 60s and 70s playing bad guys. And Ms. Down was considered quite a beauty in her day. Catch some of her earlier work from 30 years ago.

I found it entertaining just to watch Parsons play another character other than a werewolf. It wasn't boring and the story moved fast enough to keep me entertained for 90 minutes. So if you have that much time to spare on a mildly entertaining western film - then enjoy.

Save your time.
john-hebbe28 October 2017
I love a good western so much that I can even enjoy a fair to medium one. This one never rose to the lowest level. I also write for the stage so I recognize good writing. And directing. Let me list a few glaring shortcomings here: Writing. Directing. Sets. Make up. Costumes. Probably more. Everything seemed to be deficient. Perhaps the actors could have been good . . . but not when living with these problems. This production -for most involved- will probably be poisonous to their careers and for this I sympathize with them. One star. It goes downhill from there. During the credits at the end of "Justice", I noticed the names listed for the people in town and those who appeared as Army soldiers. It is entitled: TOWNSPEOPLE AND CALVERY. Suddenly I realized that my earlier, unflattering remarks were well deserved. Make it ½ star.

Class acting from boot to hat
fanbaz-549-87220924 September 2020
This is a modest story with a terrific script full intentionally laugh out lines by some very fine performers. I have been around movies for 60 years, I have written them and acted in them. When I read what some have said I get the impression the reviewers have the mental age of three and never been near a studio. One has implored you not to waste your time watching this movie, I am imploring you to take no notice. On a broader level, if there is one thing you can be sure of in a wester is that the plot will come very much an also ran to the performances. High Noon is a classic example. Cooper is not going to die. We all know this. Predictable as the setting sun. But what enthrals us is him. His uncertainly and willingness to got through with the job. Here it is a case of determination to deliver justice. All the bad men are wonderfully bad and the good guy is great at mumbling his goodness. The filming is top class and the sets match it.

Oh, it wasn't so bad
krgunn31 October 2020
I'm not sure why this well-intentioned movie is getting such bad reviews. Yes, it's a stock-in-trade Western, but it's honestly fairly well done. And one of the biggest reasons I like it is because Jamie-Lynn Sigler is breathtaking. I'd never seen her in anything before.

for the slow, simple minded
prexactly5 January 2018
I'm guessing this is supposed to be a western for the masses? Cliché after cliché after cliché... it's so bad, you start to wonder if this is supposed to be a comedy, but then you realize, no, they actually tried to make a western and failed terribly. I actually laughed out loud at the ridiculousness of some of the scenes. Hard to watch. Don't waste your time. I've seen this movie a hundred times and this is the worst rendition.

Don't Waste Your Time In This Town, Pardner
LouAbbott4 March 2018
For fans of westerns, "Justice" is a "been there, saw that" film. The story was probably written about 1868 or so. That's the time the movie takes place. "Justice" is so predictable, and has so many western clichés, that it is unintentionally funny. Off the top of their cowboy hats, western fans can devise two or three plot turns that might (accent on might) make the film better. Other than the evil town mayor, played by the always-great Stephen Lang, the other major roles are either miscast (the heroine) or incompetent (the hero), who acts like Clint Eastwood (accent on acts like). Don't waste your time in this town, pardner.

Not great but worth a watch
TheGoodTheBadAndRay9 February 2020
This movie is getting some pretty bad reviews but it seems that most of them are complaining about wardrobe and and the plot being too predictable. I thought the movie was entertaining it's worth a watch. Not the best western I've ever seen but I'm sure with the budget they had they did a pretty good job and the story wasn't all that bad.

Painfully staged parts with the 'black' stuff just a filler for even more filler. This is a classic piece of 'feed the masses'. The blacksmith (should have more time) the bought in characters should have a time to shine. This vehicle of 'fame' is not for me !. I loved the hose.

Terrible
dworldeater18 January 2021
I kept my expectations low with this one and they were exceeded (and not in a good way). All I wanted was to be entertained and Justice failed to do even that. This film was a longest 1 hour and 32 minutes movie that I seen in recent memory. Like a trip to the oral surgeon, I couldn't wait for this to be over. I can forgive the movie for it's cliches, poor delivery and horrendous acting from most of the cast. But the lead actor Nathan Parsons was not only horrible, but most unconvincing and uncharismatic lead imaginable. He stunk it up worse than a 10 foot high pile of horse manure. Most of the cast was pretty bad and bland as well. The only actors that I recognized were Steven Lang( who was actually really good as the corrupt mayor) and Robert Carradine. Carradine didn't have enough screen time to make much of a difference to a film that is this bad. As a fan of westerns, I was expecting this to be easy to like and watch. Justice didn't check either of these boxes and if you haven't seen this movie, you are better suited watching something else.

The single star is for the cross' big moment, there at the end. If it was a spaghetti western, where the characters were speaking Italian but badly over dubbed in English, I might've given it two stars.

"...destruction shall come to the workers of iniquity." - Proverbs 21:15
classicsoncall24 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Before I get going, I want to clear up a point made by at least a couple of other reviewers. I too was flummoxed for a moment when it looked like the letter produced by Marshal James McCord from his brother to Melissa Collins (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) should have been destroyed in the fire that burned down Preacher Thomas's (Jackson Rathbone) church. In what was a poorly developed plot device, the opening dialog taken from that letter looked like it was being written by Thomas right before the prostitute Miss Ginny (Ellen Hollman) came to him for recourse against outlaw Reb (John Lewis). But if you go back and watch the scene again, the preacher was actually writing in his journal at the time, and not that particular letter. Still, the impression it makes is that when the letter is eventually produced, one wonders how that was possible.

Well anyway, I think the movie's 4.1 IMDb rating is unwarranted on the low side, even if I agree with a lot of the negatives thrown at it by other reviewers. The thing is, if you judge it against the better Westerns that have come down the pike the last half century or so, it certainly doesn't stack up. But if you haven't seen that many to begin with, it's really not that bad. So the question is, should a movie be considered on it's own merits or lack thereof, or should it be measured against everything else someone has watched prior? I know, it's hard not to recall past preferences, but something to think about.

Probably the worst that can be said about the film is that it follows a fairly standard story line and there really aren't any surprises that are going to knock you out of your chair. And if you've seen enough of them, you can fairly predict the ending, even the clumsy manner in which the ex-Confederate Reb met his untimely end. I did have to chuckle a bit at that one; the cross atop the burned out church that finished off old Reb would have been better expected in a vampire movie but looked comically out of place here. I also had to do a double take when the Army cavalry rode in against the Mayor Pierce (Stephen Lang) bunch, along with Miss Melissa aboard her white horse and in a white dress. There had to be some kind of symbolism there about the white hat good guy arriving just in time to make the save, except this time it was a white bonnet good girl.

I guess my comments would actually put me in the same camp as most of the naysayers for this flick, but while watching, it didn't come across as being that bad. The cinematography was commendable and the players handled their roles well enough. I do think the picture could have had a grittier look, as the costuming and props looked a bit too new to have been part of the Old West. But what the heck, run any Western by me and I'll watch it just about any day.

I liked it.
lynnettebonner8 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This goes back to the classic westerns where the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. The hero is stoic, determined, and ready to do what needs to be done. I dropped a couple stars for a couple plot issues.

At the beginning of the movie, the minister is writing his brother a letter. He's interrupted and puts the letter in his desk in the church. Only moment later he's knocked out by the local outlaws and burnt to death in his church. The whole building goes up in flames. A few days later his brother rides into town-with the letter in his pocket.

In another scene, the marshal is called into a livery by a harlot who claims she has news for him. It's a set up so the outlaws can corner the marshal. But he sees it coming. Yet somehow the outlaws are able to get in three punches while the hero stands there and does nothing. This scene was needed for the plot, but could have been handled so much better so the hero didn't look weak.

Lastly, at the end of the movie there's a shoot-out, where the final killing shot to the main outlaw is that the cross falls off the top of the church and pins him. This is portrayed as the dead minister getting his revenge, which wasn't true to his character. He wasn't afraid to call out sin, but he also was a man of justice, not vengeance.

Other than those qualms, I thought the acting was good, I liked that while it was gritty there wasn't a lot of gratuitous cussing, sex, or violence. Nice job all around.

A decent little Western
Room1220 September 2017
Obviously a low-budget independent film, the production values transcend it's financial and practical limitations.

Stephen Lang shines as the corrupt mayor, sinking his teeth into the small role he is given. He clearly raised the stakes for the rest of the cast who all delivered decent performances. John Lewis is another standout, who can command attention with merely a cold stare.

I'm not sure if this was intended to be a faith-based film, but fortunately the biblical quotes and religious undertones are kept to a minimum. My only other detracting comment would be lack of character development for the Blacksmith, as I would liked to have known more of his backstory.

Otherwise, a nice little movie with a cool story that actual entertains. Beautiful cinematography and a haunting score also make this a Western not to be missed.

Justice
a_baron2 December 2017
"Justice" is not a bad film, the trouble is it is half a century out of date. Having said that, the soundtrack is distinctly on the superior side. The film begins with the murder of a preacher in his church by the local mafia which is run by a man who has aspirations of political power. Then guess who rides into town? Yup, his brother, who just happens to be a marshall. He didn't realise his brother was dead, but of course he is nothing like a preacher, so revenge is in the air, and cleaning up the town.

There is a bit more to it than that, but the only real surprise comes towards the end, something that is either supernatural, karma or a bizarre happenstance depending on how religious you are or not. Our brooding anti-hero is authentic, but Clint Eastwood and a few others have long since done this character to death.

A Lame, Saddle-Sore Western With Little Grit
zardoz-1319 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A standard-issue law & order oater, "Justice" qualifies as a lame, saddle-sore, western populated with superficial characters, a shallow plot, and tiresome pacing. Director Richard Gabai and a quartet of scribes have contrived a predictable, by-the-numbers, town-taming, dust-raiser that generates neither surprises nor reversals. The only thing memorable about this slack sagebrusher is Scott Peck's crisp color cinematography and the reasonably atmospheric production designs. The frontier town setting and the buildings look exemplary, and the entire film appears to have been lensed on location in genuine New Mexican terrain that substitutes for Nevada. However, nothing that takes place here breaks new ground for veteran western aficionados. A solemn, laconic, U.S. Marshal, James McCord (Nathan Parsons of "Teeth"), who fought on the Northern side in the Civil War, rides into a remote Nevada frontier town in the year 1870 and clashes with a crippled villain, Mayor Pierce (Stephen Lang of "Avatar"), who has been stockpiling loot, explosives, and weapons in an abandoned mine with the dream of launching an insurrection. Pierce and his scruffy ruffians want to revert back to the way things were before the Civil War started. They terrorize a black blacksmith and try to horse whip his teenage son. Marshal McCord shows up in town to pay his respects to his late brother, Reverend McCord (Jackson Rathbone of "Twilight"), who had been stirring up discontent among the settlers against Pierce's tyrannical rule. The lawman thwarts the efforts of Pierce's gunslingers to whip young Abraham and intimidate Abraham's father. Meanwhile, the U.S. Calvary lurks on the periphery, waiting for an appropriate time to strike. In this instance, the right time is when McCord amasses enough evidence to prove that Pierce is planning to mount an insurrection. McCord learns about Pierce's mine from excerpts in his brother's diary, but he doesn't do anything about it after he finds it.

The problem with "Justice" is its shortage of drama. Every character is as one-dimensional as a cardboard cut-out. Stephen Lang's villain looks sinister enough, but he doesn't conjure up a real threat. Pierce's henchmen amount to little more than craven bully-boys who run roughshod over the townspeople and Marshal McCord. Clearly, Gabai and his scenarists haven't watched enough westerns to know what they should have done. An episode of the long running television show "Gunsmoke" might have sharpened their wits as well as their aim about what a fearless marshal should have done. The U.S. Marshal here is as slow to rile as the villain is to intervene. Occasionally, some scenes stand out. For example, when Pierce's right-hand henchman Reb (John Lewis of "Gutshot Straight") challenges Pierce, we see a hide-out gun that our villain has hidden under his desk ready to blast Reb to kingdom come. More scenes like this one would have bolstered "Justice." Sadly, the confrontations between the villains and the villains and the marshal drum up little tension. Marshal McCord is too easily lured into traps by Reb and his sidekicks, particularly a seductive harlot who lures him into a barn under false pretenses. It is incredible to see how willingly this straight-up, plain-spoken lawman capitulates in the face of threats. Of course, the hero in a western must suffer the wrath of the villains so we can admire his strength in the face of adversity. In a scene reminiscent of the Marlon Brando classic "One-Eyed Jacks," the bad guys strip away McCord's shirt and lash him repeatedly with a whip. Unfortunately, our hero seems more simple-minded than strong. If you've seen as many westerns as I have, especially violent Spaghetti westerns, you will be shaking your head in disgust as the hero lets the villains ride herd over him. Truth be told, "Justice" could have been a lot better, and the violence could have been escalated a lot earlier. One of the standard practices in B-movies like this is that the hero and the primary villain must confront each other as soon as possible. The romance between our hero and a Sunday school teacher is embarrassingly bad. Veteran actors like Stephen Lang, Robert Carradine of "The Long Riders," Lesley-Anne Down of "The Great Train Robbery" were obviously looking for a paycheck when they made this lackluster horse opera. There is no justice in watching the amateurish "Justice."
