That's five bullets
nogodnomasters2 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Jasper Mudd (Orson Ossman) is a train robber who made off with a real hefty amount. He is pursued by Federal Marshal Denton J Cartwright (Eric Roberts) who is billed as the star, but dies in the first scene and doesn't even appear in a flashback. Our protagonist becomes the killer/thief who is being followed by an unlikable special agent (Chris Voss). He does the Josh Brolin "Labor Day" thing for a spell, but then moves on.

The film has a few decent scenes while at the same time felt slow. While Jasper fights with a gun, the title "The Gunfighter" is misleading. IMDb has "Five Grand" as the title, the price on Mudd's head. The acting wasn't half bad. Characters seemed good. The action scenes just didn't make it.

Made up trivia: Jasper Mudd is the direct ancestor of Harcourt Fenton Mudd.

Guide: No swearing, sex. or nudity.

Tolerable No-Budget Westerns
zardoz-1327 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Since Hollywood has all but abandoned the western as a profitable movie genre, independent filmmakers have rushed in to appropriate it. Unfortunately, most of these indie oaters have been pretty abysmal, even when they boast well-known talent, like Woody Harrelson and Liam Hemsworth in the dreary western "The Duel." Co-writers and co-director Orson Ossman and Tyler Graham Pavey have taken their shot at the genre with "The Gunfighter." No, their film isn't a remake of the Henry King classic "The Gunfighter" starring Gregory Peck. Moreover, it has little to do with gunfighters. The cover to the DVD promises something that the film never delivers. Instead, "The Gunfighter" appeared under its original title "Five Thousand" (2014) with Ossman and Pavey starring in the lead roles. Despite its obvious no-budget look, this western isn't as wretched as many indie westerns. The small cast can actually act, but their characters lack any charisma or sympathy.

Nominally, "The Gunfighter" follows the trail of a desperado on the dodge, Jasper Mudd (Orson Ossman of "The Phoenix Project"), who is struggling to elude a lawman, Marshal Denton J Cartwright (Eric Roberts of "The Expendables"), who managed inexplicably to escape from him in the first place. Eventually, Cartwright catches up with Mudd and shoots him in the back. The bullet perforates Mudd's shoulder. Mudd has exhausted his supply of ammunition for his six-gun, and Cartwright is poised to blow his head off when everything goes awry. Initially, Cartwright calculated that Jasper had run out of bullets, but the outlaw managed to scavenge a last cartridge from his boot. Mudd surprises the lawman and kills him. Afterward, Mudd appropriates the lawman's gun and identity. Little does our hero know it but a tenacious Pinkerton Detective, Eugene Stockton (newcomer Chris Voss), is pursuing him. The wanted poster circulated about Mudd offers a $5-thousand reward. Our wounded protagonist loses Stockton because the Pinkerton agent's horse comes up lame and he has to shoot it. Later, Mudd staggers onto property owned by a comely woman, Annabelle Jefferies (Martha Mae of "Hotel Commedia"), living in the middle of nowhere. The odd relationship between Mudd and Annabelle is intriguing and ends in tragedy that you really cannot anticipate. Later, we learn that her gun-toting husband has gone into town for a spell. Predictably, Stockton catches up with Mudd at the small homestead, but surprisingly Annabelle introduces Mudd as her husband. She maintains this pretense, and Stockton tries to expose Mudd by asking him to play a banjo inclined against a corner. Mudd warbles a clever little tune entitled "A Worried Man" and convinces Stockton that Annabelle and he are married. One evening as he is sitting down to supper, Mudd notices that the woman has set out an empty bowl and cup. Suddenly, Annabelle appears with her deadly double-barreled shotgun and attempts to obliterate him. Mudd blasts her to kingdom come and drags her bloody corpse into the bedroom of the shack and leaves her strewn in bed.

No sooner has Mudd gunned down Annabelle than Stockton returns, and Annabelle's real husband arrives, find his wife dead, and Stockton guns him down. The remainder of "The Gunfighter" concerns Mudd's efforts to shake the ever-present Stockton off his trail. He stumbles across two gunmen at a barn who try to steal his horse, and he dispatches them before Stockton confronts him again. Unfortunately, Mudd runs out of bullets again. Indeed, Stockton has been tracking Mudd in an effort to locate the satchel full of gold ingots that he stole from a train with his brothers. Stockton catches up with Mudd, but instead of shooting him, he strings him up in an abandoned barn. He hangs a sign around Mudd's neck with the word 'thief' on it. The surprise ending generates some suspense as the Pinkerton agent tightens the noose around Mudd's neck.

"The Gunfighter" is an interesting but routine western that suffers from a threadbare budget. Everything about its execution and cinematography looks commendable. Despite its languorous packing and lack of polish, this minor oater possesses the folksy quality of a Coen brothers' dramedy. You might get impatient waiting for anything to happen. As the only remotely recognizable actor, Roberts is very good as the lawman. Ossman and Pavey employ him in much the same fashion that Alfred Hitchcock used Janet Leigh in "Psycho." Nevertheless, everything looks authentic enough to pass muster. It would be interesting to see what Ossman and Pavey could accomplish on a bigger budget.

The Dumbest Outlaws...and Lawmen in the old west.
screenwriter-972-1496123 January 2022
First the good news. There's more than a little bit of tension and even some excitement in 'Five Grand'. And the scenery shots are good too. The acting, though uneven, isn't bad. But...wow, the outlaws and their trackers have to be the dumbest people ever to be a success at their calling. They let potential killers live, golden moments to escape or capture their prey slip through their fingers and always...and I mean always...make the wrong decision when it comes to saving their own lives. Oh, and there's lots and lot of hard to believe coincidences too. Way too much. I'd add a few spoilers in as examples, but I'm holding back.

It's a mess that can only be enjoyed if the viewer simply doesn't apply any logic to any of it.

Contains some decent action, but falls short.
RatedVforVinny3 November 2018
A low budget Western that just about holds it together and actually progresses throughout its duration. For good or bad, it seems like it's being made up as it goes along. A rating of 5, might be a bit unfair but the ultra low budget does not do it any favours.

its got some issues, but the story is okay.
ksf-218 March 2022
Written, directed, and starring the team of Orson Ossman and Tyler Pavey. After shooting a U. S. marshal, a crooked cowboy must stay one step ahead of the law to avoid being caught. Direct from some school of over-acting. And a bad special effects department. After a while, we're not sure who is the criminal and who is the marshal. Very sparse script... a lot of music and sound effects. We hear every sound the marshal hears and makes. Co-stars eric roberts as "the marshal". This one moves pretty slowly. Lots of shooting showdowns. This one is a lot of work to get through. Filmed in yermo. Just outside of barstow california. Showing on tubi streaming channel. S'okay.

Pretty cool actually

Warning: Spoilers
I was flipping through channels not expecting to find anything when I came across this Western. 5 Grand the Gunfighter with Eric Roberts as a Marshall. I had a bad hangover and not much patience. I started to turn the channel, but something clicked when I saw the man being chased Jasper Mudd is his name, get the upper hand on the marshall. He put on his badge, stole his identity and off he went. I love, love , love a good story like that where the watcher gets to go with the character on this long winding twisting journey not knowing what's around the next corner or over the next hill. To me that is so exciting. It felt like I was with him. I just love that. I wish I could go back in time to those days, I love westerns. That's why The Good , the Bad and the Ugly is still to this day so wonderful. You get to go with Blondie and Tuco. And this movie does that too. I really like it. I have watched it 3 times. The last 2 times I didn't have a hangover though. 😀

low budget-high drama
dcnilsen18 April 2017
it seems this movie is one that almost nobody has seen...and that is a real shame, because despite the obvious low budget, it is a western masterpiece of making the most out of the least available...another reviewer says you might be bored waiting for something to happen..did he watch the same movie??..the main character, a thief who robbed gold from a train with his brothers, goes from one circumstance to another in the film, and all of these situations end with someone being killed...I don't call that boring...it is surprisingly realistic and pay close attention to the sound track because the movies music is brilliant...I have now watched this film 4 times, and it gets better each time...I rank it one of my all time favorite westerns....and I think you will too...check it out on youtube...this movie is a classic as far as I am concerned...and I don't play games when it comes to rating movies

"It takes a worried man to sing a worried song..."
classicsoncall2 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After viewing literally hundreds of movie Westerns and just as many television series episodes, this is the first time I ever came across the hook that this one provided for it's finale. I thought I saw it coming when Jasper Mudd (Orson Ossman) found his dead brothers in a cave, and was confronted by outlaw and third brother Kane (Tyler Graham Pavey). Up till that point, Jasper found himself separated and on the run from a train robbery, gunning down a marshal (Eric Roberts in a don't blink role), finding himself befriended by a rancher's wife (Martha Magruder) who made a fatal mistake, and getting into a confrontation with a different pair of outlaw brothers, who for the sake of argument, I'll call 'dumb' and 'dumber'. The Pinkerton agent (Chris Voss) who makes his presence felt throughout the story eventually catches up with Mudd, but turns victory into defeat when the capable outlaw outwits him in a fatal showdown. Though it took a while to get there, my earlier instinct was verified when Mudd made his way into town to collect the reward money on himself with the corpse of a brother once removed. That was just too cool, and If there's another Western utilizing the same gimmick, I want to know about it.

Not a bad independant low budget film.
rayal195015 December 2021
A man wanted for robbery and murder escapes from a Federal Marshal and his adventure ensues.

The movie itself is fine, the acting is fine, the gun fights and the Pinkerton man are fine.

BUT>>>>>>>> I live in California in the foothills of the Sierra and the change of location is just jarring.

One minute in the rocky desert of the Mojave the next in the Blue oak grasslands of the Sierra Foothills then up to Northern California wetter foothills then back to the Blue Oak grasslands and finally into the Mojave again. All mostly on foot and not possible in the time allotted for the plot.

The only "location" presented on IMDB is the Calico Ghost town near Barstow. Nothing about the rest.

Good movie but I was too familiar with all the location shoots to not be taken out of the story.

Not bad, not great though either
mason256 December 2022
Great as a period piece, the outfits, the guns, everything looked great and period correct.

Let down a bit by the acting, and the writing, saying that, it was a good trip to follow along.

The only thing I didn't follow was the leather thing he kept looking through. Maybe I missed it in the beginning for why it was being used (and it became obvious later on when he got to the cave) but nothing seemed to stand out about the two peaks and why he needed some piece of leather to confirm it. It would seem that it would stand out in your mind where you left a whole crate of gold... or maybe a better land mark index.

A captivating western with beautiful scenery
dc-4320 April 2017
This movie was a new western that appeared at our library. The title "The Gunfighter" is the same as a movie staring Gregory Peck. I picked up the movie thinking it was the Gregory Peck version.

I found the plot fascinating and the scenery very beautiful. It did not have many characters but it did not feel like a low budget movie. Upon reflection, the music was good too. There were a few homages to Sergio Leone's films and I even noticed his name in the credits.

The movie was good enough that I watched it a second time just to show it to a few new people.

Actually it only occurred to me after watching it that it might have been a low budget affair since the main actor was also the writer, director, producer and make-up artist.

The DVD turned out to be of extremely high quality. I watched it on a 58 inch TV and could not distinguish this from a Blu-ray.
