has potential to gather a cult following

Warning: Spoilers
You know those films you watch when your brain needs a rest and you just want something to watch to help pass time and entertain you enough to get through to the end of the film, well add this to that list. a small town finds out that there is sinister activity going on and the town is under threat from wolves, its a decent attempt of a concept film and some scenes are well shot and with a good cast behind it with the likes of Eric Balfour (haven,24,skyline) Patrick Muldoon (starship troopers, stigmata) and Bianca A Santos ( the DUff, Ouija) it should of been much better but unfortunately its not. some action scenes feel like they were shot by someone who is being electrocuted but like i said above if your brain wants a rest then yeah go for this film and with a run time of 88 minutes its just right.

Has potential, but sags quite badly in the middle.

Warning: Spoilers
Overall, I enjoyed this movie. The premise wasn't bad, if a little thin, and there are some super long scenes which make you wish that they would get to the point. I would have liked them to have developed the plot line whereby the heart of the story had some more explanation. ***spoiler*** The girl dies in the first few frames of the film, her grandmother buries her and then commits suicide over her grave, giving the body the lifeblood she needs to resurrect. So Little Dead Rotting Hood of the title crawls out of the grave, apparently knowing she had to find super-secret Grandma's note book, but not retrieve Grandma's red cloak and sword...

Quite a lot of the action takes place before LDRH actually gets into her stride, there's the addition of a mysterious female character who's supposed to mis-direct you but has little to do other than serve as a plot signpost and you see through her in about three minutes. The same with the ultimate villain character, she knows too much to be exactly what she appears to be, there just seems to be something too off about her to be a credible surprise.

Eric Balfour does not disgrace himself in a part which is the everyman heart of the story, divorced dad, two children, argumentative wife, local boy smarts, all the usual boxes are ticked, but he still manages to bring some empathy and intelligence to the role.

Terrible and awesome but more terrible
doctorsmoothlove24 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I was a child, I would peruse the horror VHS section of my local video store and look at the box art. I remember many covers distinctly even after twenty-five years have passed. Had I seen "Little Dead Rotting Hood" back then, I'm sure it would stick in my mind too. That is the reason I checked it out after seeing it on Netflix and many other places since it's release.

The film is directed by The Asylum's vetran Jared Cohn. He is one of the better directors they use, and this film is leagues above most of their work. That does not mean it is generally good. It is not at all. What it manages to be is actually entertaining as a low budget werewolf film. A lot of The Asylum's work is not only bereft of entertainment but also bereft of effort.

The film actually features plenty of nudity and practical effects. The werewolves are mostly played by real-life canines in most circumstances and the makeup is on point. Horror fans can always appreciate good gore effects. The blood is neither too syrupy or excessive. The animal actors physically interact with the victims when they are attacking them. If only that aspect was good. The werewolf attacks are a blurry mess. The camera shakes all over the place permitting the viewer to see nothing.

The blurry attacks are better than the CGI transformation. Cohn knew these effects were trashy and thankfully limited their presence. Seriously, the CGI looks like it was from a 1990s movie. The "fights" between Red Rotting Hood and the CGI monster are laughably bad. The monster is so obviously not there. Perhaps this is why Red seems to get her butt kicked so badly? It gives the fake looking monster some unjustified screen credential.

The actors are competent and professional. You might recognize a few from daytime TV shows. The story they have to work with is unworthy of their mild talents. Red is an undead "guardian" of the town from the werewolf den mother. The den mother's connection to the town seems to have deep roots we learn nothing about. Why does the den mother have a lackey other than delivery of dialog? The film has too many characters. The entire thing comes off as if this idea was a season of a TV show that was forced to be a movie instead.

As much of a mess as the film is, it kept my attention. The good parts of it are so good that you forgive its awfulness in other regards. Most of The Asylum's films are so bad there is nothing to forgive. At least there are dogs, blood and even some boobies in Little Dead Rotting Hood!

Low budget awful
Floated21 September 2020
Had little to no expectations with this film and after watching, most didn't meet expectations. There may be some scenes of interests but overall this is justly awful. Weak acting, relatively boring story, bad cgi and some very awful dialogue. The lead actress wasn't bad and was a night spot and there are a few scenes of decent enough violence but otherwise would not recommend.

This is really worthless. It aint worth your time. this is 88 minutes I will never get back. The story is okay, but the acting, the cgi, the "wolf". All of it, it's just bad. BAD. Do not watch. I am being honest with you people that it aint worth your time. Just ignore this movie and find something better to watch. Just listen to these words: No. Do Not Watch this video. It is horrible!

Its ok for an Asylum movie
destroyerwod12 November 2022
The Asylum has been around for a while now, and yes this movie is from 2016, but i watched it in late 2022. I know what is The Asylum and what they produce. Sometimes i enjoy myself decently with their low budget movies, sometimes i really don't. In this case, it was alright...

If you decide to watch an Asylum movie, you should know what you gonna get wich is basically average to subpar acting, mediocre scripte, bad CGI and more often than not, some nice naked girls. This movie check all the marks.

The acting is alright and actually better than expected, the nudity is completely useless to the script but very welcomed as that lady is very hot ;) and when it comes to special effects, the CGI is terrible because lets face it, The Asylum never really get much budget, and it looks like a Playstation 3 cutscene at best, but the practical effects and real dogs they used to portray the wolves were decent.

Obviously they had to go around a few things, you got A LOT of close up shots of the real animals and the camera can get pretty shaky at times, but it never look super terrible or anything.

The script ain't amazing by any means but its serviceable. For a movie call Little Dead Rotting Hood tough, there is a lot more screen time for Eric Balfour's Sheriff character. That said, he was probably the best actor in the movie.

The reality is i saw this movie for rent for 1$ during the Halloween discounts on Xbox, i knew what i was gonna get when i saw it was an Asylum movie and it was just that, no bad surprise at all. I was fine paying 1$ for that and it was midly entertaining for that 90 minutes. Thus why i am giving it the average rating.

Not very good, but certainly not the worst.
Like the title says, I didn't find this to be very good. It is certainly not on par with any of the better werewolf films. Based on the fx, it looks identical to a Syfy Channel production, but a bit bloodier.

Nothing is really horrible about it, it's merely a cut rate b-flick. There is a decent amount of blood, but mostly via the stated "fx" I mentioned above.

Missing the bite
kosmasp2 November 2023
No bite intended - sorry no pun intended of course. The movie might be apt for my (accidental?) first pun. All kidding aside though: this is a low budget affair. Still casting wise, it does have quite a few people in that you may know. Marina Sirtis? What Star Trek Next Generation fan does not know her? Well I reckon she needs to make some money - why not appear in this as .. Grandma? Exactly.

Than you also have Balfour - someone who at one point or the other was a shoe in to be the next big thing. Maybe I am wrong, but women (and I reckon some men) where (and still are) quite into him. If you wonder about the story here? Well do not ... there is nothing surprising here ... some nudity, some violence, predictable twists and all that ... still if you have a heart for low budget horror movies and are willing to give it a pass (for its fun/pun title) ... go ahead: make your day (or night)

Underrated b title 3d bluray movie excellent cast!!
joiningjt14 February 2021
People need to start rating movies based on what they are , for instance a movie produced by asylum is going to be a low budget b title film. A movie with the title little dead rotting hood is not going to be the next howling!! With that in mind it over delivers and under sells. It has an excellent cast with some very respected actors 1 is a 5 time Emmy winner!! It has decent effects for its budget and the story was excellent and it did what its suppose to do....ENTERTAIN!! I actually would like a sequel as it deserves one, oh and the 3d was ok.

Fairly entertaining Werewolf movie
marcwiechmann15 December 2016
This plot Oo :-D

Lady in the woods passes the crown to her granddaughter to become some kind of Zombie-Vampire-Werewolve-Buffy-Chick, so she can protect the small town from a supernatural evil, the Denmother. Why she had to be dead for that, who knows...

It felt like an over-length Buffy episode, and it showed the same trademarks - TV look, effects that change between super bad and surprisingly good, dialogues from hell, and a cast that is fairly talented. Especially Eric Balfour, this good old veteran, does his job just as good as he always does. Bianca A. Santos, the "Red Rotting Hood", did her job well, too. The rest was overacted mostly, but still okay.

Some of the Special FX were really bad, like the 3 guys changing into wolves - I've seen this done better by small YouTubers. Some other scenes were really cool though - the director knew what he had to do with a small budget and focused on key scenes done well. A fight in a small town, at night, with lots of trained animals, flame throwers, 30 or more extras, CGI - this is not easy ! The main antagonist effects (don't wanna spoil you guys !) were not state of the art (or time), but still looked good - you needa be fair here, this is not a 200 Million dollar Hollywood movie.

Also, finally a horror B-movie without any night scene problems. Not one single time I had to try hard to recognize anything in dark scenes - so, good job from the lighting and camera department !

The dialogues are the biggest weakness of the movie - they were bad, and I mean like, super bad. The actors tried their best, but some lines cannot be delivered in a good way, not even if Meryl Streep would say them.

Overall, the movie is totally okay. It is not art, it is not even a good movie in the pure meaning of the word. But it entertained me fairly, and if you look for a "brains out, amusement on" movie, this might be the one for you, especially if you like Werewolves or creature horror in general.

There is even a pretty awesome female nudity scene - oh my gosh, was that chick hot. Uff.

So, get it, guys, nothing wrong with "Little Dead Rotting Hood", maybe besides the stupid title. In general, I probably would not have taken the Red Riding Hood story as background, it was not needed. But however, again, nothing wrong with it.

Have fun, and beware of the Denmother.

Maybe keep your dog out of the room, the tons of animal noises might make him nervous ;)

Good watch
riporeilly7 February 2016
Simply put... I LIKED this movie. I'm SOOOOO not into horror movies but the action added in to the horror element makes this a very good watch. Not for children, but good story and kept me guessing... who lives? who dies? who's the "badguy?" Nice twist and well put together. Character development and acting definitely on par. Hope there will be a sequel because the possibilities for more development are surely in place, Comics? Novels? Maybe a video game? Nice use of blood and gore and guts (and sex) without taking it to the level of cheesiness. The kind of movie I wish I could produce myself. New word comes out of this... CREXY, ... crazy + sexy = crexy.

Red Dead Redemption
one9eighty13 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A small settlement has their own hero, an old woman - the 'Keeper of the forest' (its only 'Troi' from "Star Trek TNG" - Marina Sirtis). For years she has been protecting the small town of Stillwater and keeping the wolves at bay - literally. One day she invites her granddaughter Samantha (Bianca A. Santos) to visit her, and then turns into a wolf and rips out her throat - if that isn't love I don't know what is! She buries her granddaughter with some sacred artifacts including a red cape (or for want of a better description, a hood) and a sword and then goes missing. With no protector, wolf attacks begin to increase. Local sheriff (Eric Balfour) cannot stop them, nor can Samantha's boyfriend Danny (Romeo Miller), nor can local wildlife officer Victoria (Heather Tom). Danny finds a mysterious supernatural book that kind of tells him what's going on, but isn't until a young girl called Becky (Amy Argyle) arrives in town that Danny starts piecing things together - the wolves are looking for a new 'Denmother' - something the book prophesised. Thankfully though, Samantha has returned as a zombie/ werewolf/ witch/ supernatural butt-kicker to protect everyone as the new 'keeper of the forest', is she strong enough though yet though and does she have enough time?

This B-Movie is without a doubt based on Little Red Riding Hood, as if the title doesn't give that fact away. It also crosses into supernatural myths and lore to the point where it comes across a bit like a dark version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The acting in the film is ok, there isn't much depth to the characters and at times the script doesn't help them out - there are throw away instances where a backstory is discussed, but it has no relevance to anything. The script also calls for the occasional tongue-in-cheek quip, the kind you'd expect in "Evil Dead - Army of Darkness", but it doesn't deliver them right so instead of an occasional chuckle, you have a nonsensically throw away quip that doesn't amuse anyone. The cast is primarily young teenagers and twenty-something year olds, which is obviously the intended audience of the film too. The general cinematography is decent, it doesn't always feel like a cheap B-Movie which is nice change from what you might expect. In the same breath though there are moments when things go a little too far too - the central character is occasionally over-sexualised with pointless slow motion sequences of her body and sometimes CGI is overused where instead a suggestion may have had greater impact. It is also worth mentioning that there are times where the movement and jerking of the camera does not help the plot but was added to make the film feel and look cooler. This in itself is a pity as there were some lovely visuals, decent horror effects, and from what I have read - real animals were used more often than computer generated copies (the use of real animals was a plus at times, but also a negative when you see a domesticated animal running at somebody with a look of playful fun in its eyes, rather than a furious bloodlust). In regards to the over sexualised Samantha, I noted that the character doesn't look like she appears on the film art work. Further investigation found multiple versions of the film poster/cover - which shows a clear change. The poster goes from Samantha as she appears in the film, to a version which has more skin on show and more of a menacing appearance with scars and fangs - clearly the art department tried to sell this film as sexy as well as a horror film (proving that sex sells!). Samantha wasn't the only sexualised character in the film as there is nudity as well as the gore of the horror. The final thing I want to mention before wrapping up is the pacing of the movie, despite a strong and quick start, the middle of the film only plods slowly before beginning to amble a little faster towards the end of the film. It's not often that the start of the film is better than the eventual outcome - but this one, in my opinion, achieved that brilliantly.

With all the mish-mash of supernatural elements I was expecting something a little more from this film, but it was still entertaining enough that I didn't hate it. I was surprised to find that this was an Asylum release because not all their films are that good - but this certainly was something better than their average film.

Horror, gore, sex and young people, with the sprinkling of a decent concept, a below average script, and a habit of delivering style over substance. I wouldn't recommend watching the film with the entire family present, it's certainly not kiddy or grandparent friendly. It's a decent enough film though that isn't a complete drain of your time for it's runtime. 6 out of 10.

I'm gonna kill me somthin'
nogodnomasters22 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I will try not to spoil too much of the plot, although I am not sure how much that matters with this film. In the small Appalachian town of St. Illwater, Pennsylvania, just a stone's throw from Mildred's 24 hour diner, lives Esmerelda Winfield (Marina Sirtis in a role that screams for Dee Wallace) and her granddaughter Samantha (Bianca A. Santos- see DVD cover). Granny is the protector of the people from wolves, something she passes on to her Samantha to fulfill her destiny...like after she is killed by a wolf in the first scene. The zombie Red Riding Hood comes out of the grave to fight against shape-shifting werewolves because flame throwers and automatic weapons are useless against them...Apparently you need +5 red cloak armor and a +6 wolf sword.

This is an Asylum film, which should say it all. Low budget, bad acting, bad script, but somehow pop culturally entertaining as it mixes Zombies, Werewolves, and Little Red Riding Hood in a rather bad fashion making a statement about who are... or not. There were no vampires or Wookies. Hopefully they will combine this film with their Hansel and Gretal series (that explains why no Dee Wallace) to make a super bad, but entertaining film series..."Wolfnado" anyone? Dialogue includes bits and pieces of humor.

This film is not for everyone. Just for Asylum bad film fans.

F-bomb, sex, nudity ( Ashley Doris- Miss March 2013)

Solid and enjoyable but flawed werewolf movie
kannibalcorpsegrinder4 October 2018
After a series of savage animal attacks, the sheriff of a small town finds that the town is being invaded by a pack of vicious werewolves that were previously held in control by a powerful werewolf hunter and that a thought-missing townsperson has become the new protector to stop the creatures.

For the most part, this was quite an enjoyable and somewhat entertaining effort. A lot of the positives in this one comes from the strong storyline at play here, which brings a modern twist to the werewolf-hunter setup that gets employed here. This one tackles the idea of a supernatural protector coming back from the dead and combating the werewolves attacking people under the guise of her sacrificial offering. Promoting the idea of a cursed bloodline protecting the town and using all sorts of mythical weaponry to do the job which is what has kept them from appearing beforehand gives this a rather intriguing storyline to deal with. That also plays into the films' action scenes of the wolves attacking which has some enjoyable aspects here, from the first wolf attack on the party being held out in the woods where it strikes the lone couple, a later ambush on a couple in their home and the full-on fun of the vigilante crew encountering the creatures out in the woods and realizing their outmatched when she appears to save them at the last possible moment. The few brief encounters around town offers some more fun, while the finale contains several big encounters in the underground caves which has a lot of fun in their battles with the wolf creatures and leading into the wholly exciting take-over of the town as the full-scale creature and it's minions arrive turning this into a fun little massacre sequence. However much fun the rest of the film is, it's still hard to get over its main problem in that the werewolves are merely played by actual wolves and dogs. There's never a sense of this being more than real animals for their scenes which greatly reduces the concept of them being threatening when they look like regular dogs which is the usual problem associated with following that format of the creatures. Not only does it completely undermine the point of using werewolves as the monster when they look nothing like these beings but to then place this as the main source of the film's monster really undermines this one. Coupled with the wholly ridiculous look of the monster make-up and the CGI for the main creature, the werewolves here are wholly underwhelming as a whole. The last flaw is the somewhat flimsy story structure where it tends to go in circles and never really seems to focus itself in any particular way, going back and forth on its story to get to a point that it could've gotten to much easier without wasting time on its secondary storylines. These are what hold this one back the most.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity and a sex scene.

Much better action-horror than I could have anticipated
I_Ailurophile29 March 2022
Stylized and bombastic, plainspoken and pointedly declining subtlety - films from The Asylum have a definite feel to them, and 'Little Dead Rotting Hood' (what a title!) isn't especially different. A preponderance of the dialogue, scene writing, direction (arrangement of shots and scenes, and guidance of the cast), and camerawork is boorish to the point of being garish. Even fundamental elements like lighting, costume design, set design and decoration, and hair and makeup waver on the edge between "okay" and "painfully overt." We get a LOT more wholly unnecessary and gratuitous shots of nudity, or otherwise lingering looks at women's bodies, then I would have expected, and the special effects we see are on par with what viewers anticipate of Asylum features. In all fairness, the image quality is crisp and clear, reflecting what would seem to be higher production values than one may assume, and the blood and gore effects generally actually look pretty suitable as far as I'm concerned. On the other hand, the sound design feels imbalanced - occasionally a little tinny and hollow, sometimes blaring and grating on the ears. Suffice to say, this title fits neatly with its brethren from the same studio.

At the same time, much to my amazement, this isn't an utter waste. There's some surprising cheeky cleverness in a bit of the dialogue, and some fun in the minor flourishes - like wild-eyed supporting character Benson, played up delightful zeal by Tony Ketcham. There are actually some solid ideas in the narrative, strong enough that they wouldn't feel out of place in a more sincere movie, and against all odds director Jared Cohn periodically manages to demonstrate a carefulness and keen eye exceeding the standards of like pictures. Most astonishing of all, though - defying everything we know of The Asylum - I don't think the acting is half bad! The least that can be said is that the cast members lean into the ridiculousness of a feature that is intended only as a slice of pompous genre fun. To my amazement, though, for the short time that Marina Sirtis appears on screen, I feel like she gives a performance stronger than anything actors have usually ever contributed to Asylum flicks. And her star power is adjoined by Eric Balfour and Patrick Muldoon, two players I've seen enough of elsewhere to know they're capable - and who clearly had a blast making this nonsense. So it is, too, with still other folks on hand - Bianca A. Santos, Heather Tom, Amy Argyle, and more.

But make no mistake, this production company earned a particular reputation, for a particular reason. There comes a distinct point in the length when the most tawdry tendencies of The Asylum shine through - at about the 50-minute mark, we're treated to a scene that emphatically throws out whatever nuance we may have gotten before, a moment with sandblasted bluntness that matches our expectations perfectly. That crudeness does the movie no favors, and in a similar vein, the more that 'Little Dead Rotting Hood' relies on overblown special effects, the worse it looks. In all earnestness, I think this bears strength in its cast, and in its screenplay. But I guess no one was going to greenlight this feature except this one infamous studio, so of all possible iterations, the one we get is plagued with deficiencies of one sort or another.

For everything here that is Wrong, though, I'm frankly aghast at how much was done Right. The very nature of what The Asylum does, the low-budget and deliberately schlocky approach to their productions, means that this was hamstrung from the start to one degree or another. And still there's sufficient real value in this film that I can honestly say I enjoyed it. True, anyone who can't stand any step down in quality should avert their eyes, and I'd not begrudge anyone who has more critical opinions. All I can say is that I entered with the lowest of expectations, and for however bumpy a ride it may be, I ultimately had a good time. Recommendable only for viewers who specifically enjoy B-movies, 'Little Dead Rotting Hood' is hardly essential action-horror - but if you're open to a wide world of cinematic possibilities, maybe you'll be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

Nice Try
demented_one25 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I am a fan of the B movie genre, so I am more forgiving than most.

This movie wasn't bad. Would be a good movie to watch if you have your buddies over for pizza etc.

The plot hung up a few times, and the storyline was so nonlinear that it caused me to say on one or more occasion ...Why is she doing this? or Couldn't this have been written a bit better? If it was then it wouldn't be a B movie.

My final answer is 'watchable' and nowadays that has to be enough.

Not horrible

Has far as B-movies go it is not horrible. The acting is about where you would expected it to be. Really the only thing that kept throwing me off was the sheriff's half latino daughter when both parents'were clearly caucasian.

If you enjoy werewolf movies, give this one a watch.
kimheniadis12 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was flipping through Netflix, and saw that Eric Balfour was in this movie, since I have enjoyed everything I've seen him in, I decided to give this one a watch. If you are afraid of dogs (that were supposed to be wolves), you will probably not like this one. For the most part, when they were attacking, it actually looked real. And when they showed their teeth and were snarling/growling, yea, that could freak someone out with a dog phobia.

The acting was pretty good, and the storyline was believable (for a horror movie). The gore was also decent, nothing really extravagant. The one part that I didn't feel was needed for the movie was to have the sheriff's kids come to town. Nothing much happened to them that added to the movie. They didn't get kidnapped or killed, and the one scene that involved the girl and a wolf, really didn't add anything.

When the monster wolf changed back to human, the transformation was pretty cool. You could see the multiple teats, which I don't really remember often seeing on other werewolf movies. If you enjoy werewolf movies, I would say to give this one a watch.
