Better crafted, more tightly plotted than the first film... Blu-ray: Excellent A:9 V:9
lathe-of-heaven7 December 2016
I very much disagree with the people here saying that the first film was better and strongly disparaging this one (such as the review by 'Uhungmax') Yes, in the first movie, technically, there was a lot more 'stuff' happening. And, in a sense, although it was indeed engaging and exciting, after it was over I felt that some of the key plot elements and character actions did not really make a lot of sense.

However in this 2nd film, although the plot is much more direct and simple, to me personally I thought that the story was much more tightly plotted and a lot better constructed. Here you didn't have the apparent twists and turns of the first film, usually an element that I like very much. But, like I said, AFTER watching the movie and thinking about it, there were certain character motivations and actions that didn't quite add up to me. Whereas with this movie, the story itself seemed to flow much more naturally. In my lowly and wretched opinion, I honestly felt that as a FILM in and of itself, it was put together and executed in a more streamlined and believable manner. Not that I mind AT ALL when movies are complex, or seemingly disjointed, or non-linear. I DO very much like that ***IF*** everything is well thought out and put together in such a way that it fits the internal logic of the film, and as a WHOLE all the parts work together.

I think the tricky thing about comparing the two films is that the first one had a LOT more going on and was more complex. NORMALLY, that would be something that would be very appealing to me. But in this movie, I had more of a feeling that I was being carried along by the story and much more involved in what was happening, and therefore the overall effect had more substance, and I felt that the tension of the story was much more compelling. It's like with the first movie they were almost trying to be TOO clever with the twists and turns of the story where maybe it at times had the effect of almost stumbling on itself. Don't get me wrong... I liked the first film and it was quite good. But, I feel that this one was better...

These 2 films seem somewhat different for movies coming out of Hong Kong in the sense that you normally would expect them to be a LOT more Action oriented. But, both films dealt more with inter-departmental politics and connections with highly placed officials than they were on action. But, with that said, there is ONE action scene in the middle of film that was quite effective and will blow your socks off (so to speak...)

So, that is why I feel that on the SURFACE some people may get an impression that the first film was better with more 'going on' and more twists and turns. But, I honestly feel that this one was put together in a much more cinematic way with better internal logic (being a simpler story) and more believable character interactions that had a more substantial impact in the long run...

Highly Entertaining and Suspenseful.

Warning: Spoilers
I seldom watch HK police drama thinking they are all too predictable and I have not watched Cold War, without knowing that it's actually a continuation, especially on the part of Eddie Pang and the opening scenes. Nevertheless, I can still enjoy as an independent movie although it's better to see the original Cold War first. I will not spoil anyone's fun by revealing too much but just the followings: 1) There are not too much action scenes but more on intense drama and suspense which is good for me. 2) Tony Leung and Taiwanese Eddie Pang surprised me in their acting. They deserve a best acting award each for leading actor and supporting actor. Especially Tony, his role is tailored for a best acting nomination and he carried it well, flawless. I am sure no other actor could have done it so well. 3) Chow Yun Fatt obviously accepted this role all to his personal favour and likings. No surprise in his acting, just his usual self, a little overreacting and after something done to his face. 4) Aaron Kwok seems to be lost and undecided on what facial expressions to give, especially when facing his peers. Luckily, his role is easiest to understand. 5) Arif Rahman's part has no scenes to show off. Yang You Ling, a Taiwanese young actor gave a memorable scene. Veteran actor Zhang Guo Zhu(actor Zhang Chen's father) aged so much but surprisingly better than his younger days. 6) Of the actresses, Charlie Yeung as usual, still cannot act but looking tired in all her scenes like a younger Michelle Yeo. The other younger actress will be a great actress one day.

*****SPOILER***** This movie will surely succeed in the box office and one of the 2 Taiwanese actors I mentioned above will definitely appear in the next part, as shown lying on a hospital bed at the end, but which one ?

Entertaining but this could have been so many better

Warning: Spoilers
This is definitely a huge improvement over Helios (2015) but it still can't hold a candle next to Lok Man Leung and Sunny Luk's breakout hit Cold War (2012). Even though it has won a spew of film awards, I still find its pedigree suspect.

What made Cold War work is the superbly played battle of wits. Who is the cat? Who is the mouse? We are never quite sure of the M.B. Lee's (Tony Leung Ka Fai) allegiance which makes for an engaging and absorbing experience. His ultimate act of giving his son into the arms of the law cemented his final stand. So it really pisses me off that 4 years down the road, Cold War 2 plays the same old game.

The filmmakers fall into the trap of typical flashy sequels when the predecessors become surprised hits. To up the ante they decided to up the levels of everything -bigger cast, bigger explosions, louder car chases, bigger conspiracy, bigger mambo jumbo talk, but sadly lesser logic. The plot is unnecessarily convoluted till the point some characters become superfluous. Can someone tell me what the heck Legislator Oswald Kan (Chow Yun-Fatt) does here that is so important? I think the filmmakers were blurred too because Oswald completely disappears in the last act. In a Straits Times interview with Chow, he said he had to constantly go back to the writers to enquire the meaning behind his scenes. If you take his character out, you essentially take another chunk of unnecessary actors out probably shaving off 30min easily, making it a tighter film. Last night's screening is the first time I see so many patrons leave for toilet breaks!

The plot is nuts, unnecessarily complicated but in the end it is so simple. It is about people in high places wanting to control everything. Come on lah... Cold War 2 will probably be distributed in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. Which citizen from these countries doesn't understand people in high places want their own kind in the right posts for all of eternity till the point they would assassinate anyone, both metaphorically and literally, standing in their path. Who wouldn't know the concept of $1-companies sprouting up to do their bidding. Heck! We know all these and more. If you are even surprised by the plot, you are probably an A1 victim of government's brainwashing machinery.

Through the course of 3 films Lok Man Leung and Sunny Luk have defined a distinctive kind of high-browed thriller that has become their calling card. Characters go through lots of grand posturing and spewing eloquent veiled threats. But for me, they don't necessarily treat the audience with respect. The verbal vomit of self-important verbose exposition sure doesn't help. For the cursory viewer looking out for entertainment the movie may score, but if you go past all the elaborate staging and knife-edge dialogue the characters' actions defy logic. For example, one would think that Eddie Peng's Joe Lee must be crucial to the syndicate's next move since they are breaking him out of jail. But no, they intend to send him off to a new country to escape the manhunt. Aaron Kwok's Sean Lau giving the villain 3 ultimatums so that he escapes the clutches of the law is also baffling. It made no sense to me. Wouldn't you want to find out how far the rot has gone?

The filmmakers must hate the flashback device a lot because I don't think they have used it in their 3 films IIRC. But a flashback to the 1995 incident would have helped cement the relationship between M.B. Lee and the shooters. It would have made the supermarket standoff scene more emphatic. As it is, I felt nothing. I think that's the problem - the film may be entertaining but it isn't compelling for me on any level; my emotions not invested in the story. Even the procedural element is weak with every new discovery told in a scene of exposition. Show me; don't tell me everything! That is such a shame because the cast is stellar.

My wifey and I had more fun picking the movie apart over prata and Milo than watching it. I am really kind with this review because we actually discussed a lot more than this. Oh well, maybe Cold War 3 will tie up all the loose ends. Yes, there will be a third part, for better or for worse.

Not so good sequel
ryanmo-351784 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Watched the second episode after the amazing one. But the story is so straightforward and all are expected. The addition of Chow Yun Fat did not cause any better cohesion. Leung Ka Fai became bad again as the introduction of the big gang behind, but not much surprising. The plot was just not good enough.

It was like the first movie, but missing the "and then some"...
paul_haakonsen19 November 2016
Let me start out by saying that "Cold War II" from 2016 was just every bit as entertaining as the first "Cold War" movie from 2012. And with that being said, take it for what it was. If you liked the first movie, then you will also like the sequel, and if you didn't, then chances are that you will not like this movie either.

I found it to be adequately entertaining, although it wasn't particularly outstanding or memorable - just as the first movie had been.

"Cold War II" continues on a short time after the events of the first movie, and we see familiar characters return to the screen in this sequel. And having established characters return was a good thing.

However, it just felt as if directors Lok Man Leung and Kim-Ching Luk set out wanting to accomplish too much with "Cold War II" and only delivering on about half of this.

There was just a sense of it all being too rushed and forced, as well of an element of too much chaos going on. Which didn't really help the movie in any way.

As in the first movie, "Cold War II" does have some impressive names to the cast list, including Aaron Kwok, Tony Ka Fai Leung and Yun-Fat Chow.

"Cold War II" failed to make a lasting impression and also failed to stand out in the Hong Kong cinema. Surely, it was an entertaining enough movie, but it is hardly one that you will be watching a second time around.

My rating of "Cold War II" ends on five stars out of ten, similar to the first movie.

Watched this more than 7 times to appreciate its fullness!
thomashee9 July 2017
I have watched this film more than 7 times, review, rewind to catch some of the moments, character and conversation that i missed out in previous viewing.

The 1st time when i saw it, i must admit, i was not able to catch the full meaning and why certain characters behaved the way they did and missed out some small conversations but are critical to the plot.

But with each viewing my understanding of each character, sequence, and the entire story improves.

This is a very well crafted movie that deserves nothing less than a 10/10 rating. The story is so well crafted, the characters so well acted, the conversations so well spoken and planned for you have to go through the film a few more times to fully appreciate if you find it hard to give it a 10/10 rating.

I am very sure you will appreciate it more if you take your time to know what it is trying to portray.

This is the only movie i have watched so many rounds and enjoy every session. The highlight is the exchange quick spats between Sean Lau and MB Lee when MB Lee came to confront Lau why Lau shot at his son.

This sequence is so difficult to do and as an artiste myself, i know it really takes a lot to do this sequence so perfectly well and yet these 2 veteran actors did it so effortlessly!

Go buy the original DVD and enjoy the show over and over again! This is one of the BEST the industry has to offer.

Absolute garbage
timothylam-3509914 July 2016
Horrific, incoherent hack job of a film. Greedy producers bank on the finest actors in the region, and completely neglect the more important aspects of a film (eg. captivating story, interesting and diverse characters, logical process of events etc.). If anything, the music composer should have his license taken away and be sent to Bollywood. The abysmal, grotesque agglomeration of computer-generated french horns, generic clave rhythms, boring string ostinatos and a sound effect selection that is stubbornly stuck in the 80's. The amount of cliché and cringe in this film is overwhelming to the point that I wanted to disappear down my shirt collar. Famous actors mean f**kall when the writers have no idea what they're doing. The tragic part is, being a sequel to a much better film, this movie will likely do just as well, if not better, than its seasonal competitors, allowing producers to cry into more, thicker wads of $1000 banknotes as they scroll down the review section. AVOID at all costs

This is already a political propaganda film
yoggwork23 February 2019
This is already a political propaganda film, which clearly puts the Legislative Council on the table. The key is that one of the main plot lines of the whole film is the checks and balances of rights. It's busy to set rules, play in competitions, whistle and send out news releases to make a fool of yourself. Returning to the film itself, it's too far away from the front, and it's hard for the audience to connect the plot. In addition, compared with the previous one, this one is just like turning the table and fighting the knife. The plot has no depth, the story is full of twists and turns, and the struggle turns into a round system. In the first half, I call on you in the second half. If it weren't for some performances, it would be for the evaluation of the dog-tailed mink.

A bad directed sequel and simply made up.
mailtaskservice30 October 2019
The first movie was nice and complex but this second was simply made up, bad directed story and lots no illogical nonsense scenes stories. 1. MB Lee has gone so hard to meet the ex CP and his son but both of them drive him back? What a big laugh nonsense. 2. If they are so professional, why nobody guard that workshop backdoor? 3. The underground tunnel is another big laugh showing Rambo never dies even with machine guns and special guns. 4. Even I not a cop nor any near professional, also knows I will not fall for the CP tricks to lure the bad guys out. 5. When these bad guys so professional can make bombs and detector, why the junk yard has no other detectors? 6. A simple gangster has few phones and why top police has no money to carry any extra? Why there is no other to take the new position CP and still the same CP?

This movie is another ordinary simple actions, bombing, shootings, fightings that cannot grasp a real memory to audience. HK was never near the top 10 safest city or country. It was once known as no 1 in Asia and top 5 in the world as crime city or country. But this last decade had changed because China had took over and lessen democratic while increased dictatorship. HK is also a small place so governing is easier than most countries, hence crimes further reduced. This motto is to promote HK and cover the dark side of HK.

The writing's not up to par
Leofwine_draca9 December 2022
While I really enjoyed the first film in this series, this follow-up isn't anywhere near so good. It follows straight on from the first one but brings back characters whose arcs were already complete for a new story that feels like it was made up on the spot. All of the major players return (Andy Lau excepted) with newcomer Chow Yun Fat playing the role of a lawyer eager to prosecute corrupt cops. What we get is a needlessly complex, laboured and occasionally histrionic story that has a few cool action sequences (dodgy CGI aside) and very little else. The actors are fine but but the screenwriter not so...
