Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • It is revealed that a mother is having an affair when she is caught by her son while she is kissing a police officer.
  • In a note, a girl says how her father "wasn't gentle, wasn't kind", that "he betrayed (her) again and again" and now the "betrayal lives and grows inside" her. It implied that her father had impregnated her and abused her several times before. It is very subtle.

Violence & Gore

  • A girl is found hanging from a rope from a tree. Her body is then sunk to the bottom of a lake.
  • The movie is based on the disappearance and suicide of a young girl and finding out who killed her.
  • Two men go to the house of a Vietnamese family and they pull up weeds, verbally assault the residents, and punch the father of the family. A man tries to intervene but gets in a hassle. The attacking man leaves in his car and almost hits a young boy.
  • A girl recalls the last night she saw her sister. Her sister was being beaten in her room by her father as she screamed, and that she went silent (see Sex & Nudity) before sneaking out later. The sister climbs a tree and sits for a while before hanging herself from the tree in front of the girl.
  • A house is set on fire and we see a man walking out with two others holding him up while he is covered in ash.

Profanity

  • 4 uses of "fuck" are racially charged, aimed toward Vietnamese family members, 3 of them spouted in a minute long fight scene.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Two kids watch as one of the kid's mother comes home in a car obviously drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The movie opens with two kids finding a girl hanging from a tree and figuring out what to do with the body. This can be disturbing to those suffering from mental illness or suicide.
  • The scene when Laura's fate is uncovered can be Intense as it explores rape, abuse, incest, teenage pregnancy and suicide.
