This film hits some very clean notes
hiketakea9 June 2018
Very modest budget film that allows you to watch people living the humble and quietly arduous, existence they are inhabiting. Nothing is amped up or histrionic or violent. And as a result it reaches exceptional moments that genuinely resemble how people actually live life without muscling you into it with self conscious persuasions. It's engaging because the characters develop to something rich for the audience and the richly developed characters grow into themselves beyond the limitations they feel consigned to and captured in.

A drifting soul that struggles with life
syam-807-6072691 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Losing in Love is a neurotic, mysterious, self-referential piece that centres around Ronnie (Martin Papazian), a drifting soul that struggles with life. We discover that he's had another stint in prison. He, and the other characters, play it down as if it were something run of the mill. No one delves into his past, they recognise Ronnie's demeanour (not misdemeanours), they see him for what he is - an open, kind, soul that craves love.

Ronnie meets a waitress, Amber (Marina Benedict), a striking, energetic, quirky woman who too is carrying baggage. He becomes smitten with her instantly. Due to Amber's wavering situation, in which she is cheated on, Ronnie invites her to share his space. She, out of options, accepts. There relationship, albeit platonic, becomes substantial and feelings subtly manifest.

Oh yeah! Ronnie's a screenwriter (Would he be anything else!) and although this is a clichéd scenario we witness a deeper understanding of his psyche. We see his fantasies in real life emanating from his writing, or the other way around. These fantasies blur the lines between Ronnie's vision of his art and the real, however the film doesn't get carried away in attempting to distort the viewers' perspective and knows its direction. It wasn't scatty like Synecdoche, New York.

This film struck a cord with me, particularly because Ronnie displayed a full spectrum of emotions without going to the extremities we often see in order to create drama/action. My only gripe is the lack of his past and how it manifested to prison.

Martin Papazian is not only the lead, but also the writer and director. This for me is testament to the fact the he couldn't let it go and envisage anyone else fulfilling the role as it was so personal. I can relate, I'm so many things that Ronnie is and invariably Martin.

A beautiful film
asd-622326 March 2018
I loved this film, Martin Papazian who wrote, directed and played the main part, Ronnie, is clearly very talented. Ronnie is trying to write a love story set in a dystopian world, when he meets Amber, a waitress. Marina Benedict is a perfect choice for Amber, having an elfin "other-worldly" beauty which works beautifully in the film. The film begins to merge reality and fantasy, but in subtle clever ways while the story Ronnie is writing becomes more the story of Ronnie & Amber themselves. To balance beautiful cinematography, a storyline which is by turns funny and heartbreaking, with some amazing, restrained and heartfelt acting... Well I certainly can't wait to see what mr Papazian creates next!

DOES EVERYBODY IN A MOVIE HAVE TO BE A WRITER?

ENOUGH SAID!!! Why do "writers" have to be so interesting? Are there any other character choices?

A hidden gem and a slow-burn classic

Stunningly beautifully crafted film - a hidden gem. I fully expect this to become a slow-burn classic. It raises the question as to whether Hollywood is even capable of recognising class when it's in front of their noses...

Sweet Movie

Love the pureness and kindness of the leads. A "feel good" movie that is so needed during turbulent time. Los Angeles as a backdrop really makes you want to visit with hopes of meeting these characters. All of the main characters exude empathy and a genuine caring and support for one another!!

Poem to LA
denise-roman11 April 2018
The writer is a poet at heart. His lines about wounded love on the beach, watching her running away, hurt. His characters create the perfect LA melange of hope and depression, ephemeral presentism and the forever possibilty of a tomorrow. This is my city, I could recognize it in DTLA, Santa Monica, beaches, waves and offices, in death, love, and sunsets.

Wholesome and a little comforting
happimess17 May 2021
I don't write reviews. Ever.

There's a cheesy vibe but very much a film that strikes sharp with its poetic heart.

The characters are likeable.

The acting is more than decent.

I loved Ronnie.

He has an air of Bukowski about him.

A more wholesome Bukowski!

I give this movie ten out of ten because of what they worked with here.

This is romantic, beautiful and stunning to watch.

Poets, as I am will love it.

Enjoy x.

Love this gem of a movie

Warning: Spoilers
I so enjoyed this movie, I am compelled to write a review.

Not many movies make the viewer care about the characters, this one certainly does, even the lower credited ones. I don't think I have ever seen a movie where more than one character continues to narrate the storyline, which is so quirky but totally works and is easily believable.

It has a sound track and music score that had me reaching for my phone to jot down a one liner quote and Shazam the music. Surprisingly it was returned unfound.

A creatively crafted movie that brings the writers imagination and his characters to life. I can't wait to watch it again so they can all live another day.

Watch this fab film forever!
danielhill502 August 2022
Beautiful film, great performances and story taking the screenplay fade in and turning it on its head. A work of brilliance. Martin Papazian and Marina Benedict and the whole cast cast a spell of loss and live in the midst of downtown L. A. "It's a Wonderful Life" for the dystopian twenty-first century. This should be playing everywhere! 10/10 Daniel Hill.
