Touching Darwin survivor stories
OneAnjel13 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It's similar to I Shouldn't be alive but with the main difference being many of the situations were not in remote areas or solo. I don't want to diminish the touching story of survival for these individuals but I felt many did things that most intelligent people would not have done or were avoidable accidents. For instance, in the Collins episode, the son goes off quite a distance to scale a rock wall without proper gear to shoot a mountain goat whose carcass would be irretrievable. They're deep in bear country 3 hours from their truck. After the son falls, the father hikes for an hour to check on the son instead of high tailing it to the truck to go for help. When he finally goes for help, he covers the son's face with a tarp which surely exacerbated his brain injury (breathing carbon monoxide for 10 hrs).

In the case of Craig, who in S2 becomes the host, most accounts show him yell "off belay" meaning he thought he was hooked in on his own harness when he leaned back. Many accounts, and therefore the audience, blame Steve for leaving the belay without knots in the ends. But if Craig had actually been hooked into his own harness he would no longer be on the belay and would no longer need Steve or the knots. It's one of the most rookie mistakes a climber can make and yet he calls it a communication error. That was an incredible story of survival but I think it's important to clarify and let Steve off the hook (no pun intended).

In another tragic situation, 2 men going bear hunting make a fatal decision - they send a skiff filled with 300 lb of bear meat down the Lagoon with one man while the other departs the skiff taking both rifles. Logic dictates they should have left half the bear meat on the mud riff and each man would have kept a rifle in the dangerous predator-infested area.

In one, the father with his 10-year-old son tries to navigate an ATV over too narrow path, daring to claim he doesn't know why he had his son get off, which kept him from harm. Based on the information here, everyone understands it was because he knew what he was doing was dangerous. Imagine being 10 and having to hike out in bear-infested woods -- becoming the guardian when just hours befor you were the guarded. But the show doesn't really discuss the reprecussions on the son.

There's one where you just want to know why the helicopters didn't see this man with his bright yellow tarp. The irony is as painful as the outcome. And why didn't he think you amputate his leg to free himself? Surely others have done so.

The show has entertainment value and i appreciate the focus on faith and prayer and the conversations with the survivors. But much of it feels a bit like watching Darwin survivors.
