The fifth season of "Death in Paradise" has been very enjoyable so far. "The Complex Murder" was good, but not great, "One for the Road", "Posing in Murder" watchable enough and "A Personal Murder" outstandingly good. "Lost Identity" though is easily the weakest of the five. It's not an average episode as my rating would make you think it is, the best term to explain my thoughts would be "a mixed bag".
Let's start with good, shall we?
. The production values are great as usual. Everything is beautifully photographed and the music fits the scenery. The acting's solid too. Wendy Craig is a delightful watch as Humphrey's aunt. Craig's one of those actresses, who brings charm to every role she is in.
. The story is fun at times. There are relatable themes touched upon and the humor's quirky enough.
But...
. Sadly the mystery underwhelms this time around with too much attention given to Wendy Craig-even though she is worth every frame- and not so much on the murder itself. There are very few suspects in this case( only three, I think) and the story did not seem to get properly going at first. Freddie (our murderer) was too good of a suspect early on and it was apparent that he was up to no good. The motive given to the killer was also average at best.
. Sometimes the character interactions, especially between Dwayne, Catherine and Florence were a bit childish. The direction is not as fluent as it needs to be. and even though the dialogue is not bad, it does not stand out either.
Overall, enjoyable, though pretty flawed episode .
