Demme + Timberlake makes one appreciate his pop act more
Quinoa198426 April 2017
Here's what sets apart a director like Jonathan Demme from the average journeyman or hired-gun, and certainly one must note that one could have made a concert/documentary movie about Justin Timberlake performing with the Tennessee Kids in Las Vegas in entertaining fashion and style simply by presenting the group as is. The energy is difficult not to capture from Timberlake who, however you feel about his songs, is a massively talented singer and who makes sure to give these people who likely paid several dozen arms and legs and other limbs to make it to see his live (final on this tour) performance with this great back-up band. But what Demme adds to the equation is genuine human interest and a sense of cutting and framing that is unparalleled; seriously, if Scorsese had directed this it wouldn't have been as interesting as what Demme does.

It's really in the opening and the closing one sees it most; the film opens as Timberlake enters the arena where the concert is being held, but instead of the usual vapid things like getting make-up on or showing total foolishness, he gets the Tennessee Kids to introduce themselves. It's a good idea and it gets one intrigued; these aren't necessarily people who are there to look pretty and nice, they're career musicians who have been together for a while and they're happy to be doing what they do (one singer says she always has a smile on, and we can believe it, it's not disingenuous).

Because we have these short but empathetic profiles in the first several minutes, when it comes time for the songs to be performed we want them to do well and be spectacular. And then over the closing credits we see how this concert was put together by the crew, which was no easy task and involved things like moving machinery and planning stages and moving lots and lots of seats and lights and other things people might take for granted (so make sure to watch until the very end of the movie on your Netflix viewing).

Along with the main attraction, they put on a helluva show, and Demme makes sure as a director to get an appropriate tone depending on what song is up - so when it's just Timberlake with his guitar, he stays on him, where-as if there's a number involving EVERYONE (including the audience, and unlike Stop Making Sense he does involve them since, frankly, Timberlake is the kind of performer that asks the audience to come in on songs with him, not obnoxiously so but enough to keep things energized), he has a crane shot showing everyone in the arena, and then goes in close and captures the camaraderie of the musicians.

It helps that, and I don't know if this was Demme's doing or if it was just how the show was in general, that the lighting and effects on stage bring out the spectacle of the show. If I don't rate it all the way up high it is because, also frankly, I don't love all of the songs (though Timberlake and especially his players made me like a few more than I had expected, some were totally new to me as well), and it's difficult to ever hear "Let Me Rock Your Body" without thinking, still, of the 2004 Super Bowl.

But Demme's cinema, as it was in all of his concert movies, syncs up beautifully with what this particular act is trying to do, which is to be a bouncy, sometimes sexy and especially classy pop show ("Suit and Tie" is one of those that is infectiously cool too). But the point I'm making is that if you're already a fan of Timberlake's, then this is simply a sweet combination of a lot of his hits and some covers ("Human Nature" and "That girl is Poison" are two well done ones), and if you are on the fence or even have barely a casual interest, this filmmaker gets you the f*** into it. That's something.

This filmmaker will sorely be missed.

Show was superb, editing was awful
gogi-8667812 October 2016
Having seen the 20/20 tour myself, I was excited to relive the memories of the amazing night we had. It was the best concert I've ever been to. Justin's energy and personality Made you feel every single song and dance along to them. The band was phenomenal, they played so well and gave all the JT Classics a new but familiar tune. The last song gave me the bumpiest goosebumps I had in a long time.

Now I can see that being there at the venue and watching a taping of it is a completely different story. But.. the editing made it so much less enjoyable than it could've been. The cuts are boring, the camera angles don't give you the feeling of that huge crowd and that amazing night it was. You barely see the audience at all. Sometimes the camera randomly pans back & forth between JT and a Band member while showing an almost black frame for 5 seconds or so. The editing is sooo slow. So, Go watch it if you like JT. It was good overall but with better camera work and editing it could've been A LOT better.

Still great but quite simply took something away from this excellent show.

Warning: Spoilers
It was a mistake to try to edit the show into 90 minutes (the blame lying with Netflix or Demme ?), not only that , but to waste 10 of those minutes with totally superfluous intro banter and 5 minutes at the end of laborers deconstructing the stage set. They cut out : TKO , Summer love, Lovestoned (first half), Cry me a river, Tunnel vision, Senorita, Take back the night ,Murder. Cry me a river was an epic rendition and it is criminal that it never made the cut. Here's hoping that it eventually sees a Blu Ray video release that is UNCUT ! But given that this is Netflix branded , I somehow doubt it.

But why the need to restrict it to 90 mins ?! The movie is being streamed so there were no physical constraints !

Great show but lackluster vocals from JT
dbujanda8 February 2017
Amazing show and performers. Literally one of the coolest shows I've ever seen but 2 items of crtitique: 1. The movie has really bad editing. They show some really weird camera angles at some points; one was looking up at JT's feet through a glass floor he was dancing on for 5 seconds. What was that about? 2. The concert/performance itself was fantastic except it would be nice if JT actually sung the chorus and sung it more like the studio album vocals. He relied too much on his back up singers for the chorus and the bridge of every other song. Also having the audience sing every line of the chorus for the whole song is annoying. It didn't happen the whole time, but it happened on a number of songs. Doing it a few times is fine . . . but literally like the last 4 or 5 songs were like that the whole time. His vocals on Mirrors was especially disappointing.

Otherwise, his different take on the songs from the album versions were cool. I appreciated that. Just need more effort on the vocals and less being distracted by the audience. Otherwise, it is worth watching but you will find yourself turning on the studio album after it.

Great Film

This is a spectacular production! I have seen the show live twice in Chicago As always, this is a thought-provoking sensory overload, skillfully captured in high definition with 15 cameras! The footage was Masterfully edited, one of the best concert DVDs of all times in my opinion! I only hope and wish that they will release this on Blu-Ray of HD-DVD so that we can re-live this extravaganza over and over again.

Incredible and Amazing

This is truly a masterpiece. The music, the visuals, the spoken word. Everything is on par. There are so many feelings felt throughout Lemonade. I've never seen anything quite like it. Justin Timberlake has changed the entire music game forever. I highly recommend that EVERYONE watches this, it is a life changing experience.

Lovely Change My Life
santossandraxz21 June 2017
The cinematography varies throughout the film but remains to be consistent to the overall experience of the film. Asides from the film, music is both personal and raw as he experiments with different genres of music such as R&B, pop,rap and dance. Despite the wildly different genres of music JusTin Timberlake plays with, much like the cinematography, it all mends together well to produce the over arching story that he intends the viewers to experience.

The show was amazing and very professional. Justin Timberlakeis a non- stop, dancing and singing for hours. The opening was pretty good when he came out and also jump was a really good performance. The entire show was full of energy so it's kind of hard to say which were the highlights because every song had something special and unique. I saw live couple of his previous tours they were good but you can't compare with this one. The dancers were fantastic, the lights and the whole show were just perfect. Justin Timberlake still looks very good. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you to see it. You'll enjoy the show from the beginning to the end.

I was expecting something better from Jonathan Demme
reynaldogzz12 October 2016
It was a great concert, it lasted 2 years, almost the same time they took to launch the movie. I get it, it was going to be a 150 min. movie if every song were used, but I still think they could have done something to keep more of the concert. Justin Timberlake is a great performer and just as the last DVD "Future Sex Love Show" this one "the 20/20 experience" is amazing, an exiting show to witness. I'll give it a 10 to the show but a 6 to the movie. I hope later they release a directors cut with the complete show. something to print Jonathan Demme signature on. And I will not hold me back to buy tickets the next time he gives a show or for the next tour.

I loved it
admalice-3062122 May 2017
n recent years, Justin Timberlake's been forcefully trying to sell to the world that he can act. For a superstar of his stature, he's done just fine at picking the right roles to showcase his good looks and undeniable charisma, most notably putting both to good use as Sean Parker in The Social Network. But as Jonathan Demme's concert documentary Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids indisputably shows, Timberlake is only truly in his element when on stage being a showman.

The title of the film is significant. While there's no question that the one-time Mouseketeer and ex-NSYNC heartthrob is the commanding headliner, there's also something refreshingly inclusive about the degree to which he showcases and interacts with the 25 or so performers sharing his stage. This is not a show in which a preening star treats his backup vocalists and musicians as the help, or obliges his dancers to work up a sweat while he coasts. Throughout, Timberlake feeds off the other performers' energy as much as the audience's worship.

To understand what director Jonathan Demme does so well with Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids, watch just about any other concert film. For the most part, the stodginess of the form is stupefying. Cameras stay trained on the lead singer from multiple angles, with frequent inserts of the backing band and audience, for just a few seconds at a time. One song gives way to the next, all shot and cut nearly exactly the same way.The musicians have to work to keep viewers engaged, overcoming framing and editing that rarely shows them to their best advantage. i love this film congrats JT
