A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of last year, paving the way for the Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey horror franchise, which in turn kicked off the Twisted Childhood Universe, consisting of other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio Unstrung, building up to the crossover movie Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain, so Mickey-based horror movies also started springing up. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and...

Sleepaway Camp by Bj and Harmony Colangelo is Now Available: "Initially considered "just another slasher film" during its 1983 release, Sleepaway Camp has since emerged as a cult classic due to its talented young cast, remarkable practical effects, and notorious ending. But although the queer themes explored in its memorable final moments were initially intended to shock and unsettle audiences, Sleepaway Camp's empathetic portrayal of its unlikely killer sets it apart from other "trans panic" films of its time.
Together, Bj & Harmony Colangelo assess where Sleepaway Camp falls in the slasher canon and do a deep dive on the film's themes and legacy, exploring how changing attitudes towards the LGBT community has led to both a reclamation and necessary critique of the film by modern audiences.
Sleepaway Camp's divisive reputation has inspired a decades-long debate that changes alongside the attitudes and culture of its viewers. Through historical context, personal memoir,...

As the storm of controversy rages on over Matty Healy’s interview on “The Adam Friedland Show”, Azealia Banks is joining in the chorus of criticism against the 1975 frontman.
Healy, who is rumoured to be dating pop royalty Taylor Swift, has been caught in the crossfires of social media in recent months after he laughed at jokes saying the rising rapper Ice Spice sounds like an “Inuit Spice Girl” and a “chubby Chinese lady” while appearing on Friedland’s talk show.
Banks, who is never one to hold back, scorched the “Love It If We Made It” singer on her Instagram Story: “Does Matt Healy know that no one actually thinks The 1975 make good music and that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing.”

If you were a straight guy in the late 2000s, you probably thought Jennifer’s Body was made for you. The movie’s poster featured Megan Fox, established by Transformers and numerous magazines as the “hot girl” of the moment, kicking back atop a school desk wearing a miniskirt and high heels. Shots of a nude Fox emerging from the water filled the tv spots and trailers, as did double-entendres about how Jennifer “goes both ways.”
If you were a straight guy who watched Jennifer’s Body in the late 2000s, you saw that the movie wasn’t about you at all. Yes, it does feature Fox as a high school succubus who seduces and destroys various high school guys, but the movie’s emotional core was on Fox’s Jennifer and Amanda Seyfried’s Needy, longtime friends dealing with their relationship imploding as they go in different directions. Written by Diablo Cody,...

If you've ever read about Dominican dembow, chances are you've read Jennifer Mota's work. Mota has become one of the quintessential historians of Dominican dembow music, penning the first history and timeline of the genre and archiving notable artists and moments in dembow. She's managed artists, started a podcast, interviewed some of the most prominent Latinx artists in the world, created her own clothing brand, and even tried to be a Disney Channel kid. The bodega baby from Philadelphia is out here putting on for her city and her people in more ways than one.
Mota inherited her interest in music and writing from her father, a journalist who she says encouraged her to write in a way that changed minds and to be aware of the corrupting force of the media. "It was almost like he low-key coerced me into being a journalist just like him," Mota says with a laugh.

Several radio stations in Canada have announced they will be ceasing to play Arcade Fire at least for now, after their frontman Win Butler was accused of sexual misconduct by four people this past weekend.
> Sarah Neufeld On How Arcade Fire Formed
Stations in the indie rock genre in places like Toronto and the U.S. have also removed the band from circulation.
Butler and his wife Régine Chassagne are the core pair of the hit band, which most recently released the album We in the spring of this year.
Allegations of misconduct were first reported by music publication Pitchfork, which collected stories of three women and one gender-fluid person who told of inappropriate behavior by Butler between 2015 and 2020.
The three women said they had sexual encounters with Butler when they were between the ages of 18 and 23, and he would’ve been in his early thirties. They told Pitchfork that...

Indie-rock artist Ariel Pink, who came under fire and was dropped by his label after controversy arose over his support for Donald J. Trump, went on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Thursday night to answer the host’s questions about being “stripped of his livelihood,” telling Carlson he is “destitute” as a result of cancel culture.
In response to Carlson’s statement that Pink is “a recording artist who can’t record,” Pink said, “I can’t tour either at this point. So it pretty much leaves me destitute and on the street. I’m sort of overwhelmed right now and I don’t know exactly what to do.”
“You’re taking a huge risk coming on this show,” Carlson said, an implicit acknowledgement that receiving the support of the conservative host may not improve his battered status in his musical community. “Why are you doing it?”

When Lana Del Rey dated the release of her latest album “Norman Fucking Rockwell!” for Friday, August 30, one day before the 2020 Grammy Awards eligibility cutoff, the idea that she might receive her first ever Album of the Year nomination for it still seemed like wishful thinking. After all, the initial singles from the project – “Mariners Apartment Complex” and “Venice Bitch” – were released a full year ago in September 2018 and only found recognition stateside as mid-tier performers on the Billboard digital charts.
The best performing song was “Doin’ Time,” a cover of the 1997 Sublime track, which peaked at number-four on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on June 1, 2019 and was given a video treatment only one day before the album dropped. But that video in only one weekend amassed 8.4 million views on YouTube. Compare that to the views of “Venice Bitch,” released a year ago, which stands at 9.1 million. By that small stat alone,...

With the new slasher style horror Pitchfork selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask actor Brian Raetz about; his character, how he got involved in the film and what makes Pitchfork stand out in the horror genre.
What can we expect from the film Pitchfork?
You can expect a satisfying blend of homages to all your classic horror film favourites with a kind hearted and authentic twist originating from our director Glenn Douglas Packard’s personal experience of coming out to his parents in rural conservative Michigan. This film is powered by the love of friendship and the will to survive amidst a world filled with characters that do not accept you. Some characters in this film would like to see Hunter change, to no longer be gay, and others would like to see him dead.

Nicole Dambro put in a good word for me. I spoke with Glenn Packard (the Director) and loved how much passion and soul he was bringing to it. Realised I was...

With the new slasher-style horror Pitchfork selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask actor Andrew Dawe-Collins about what makes the film stand out in the genre, preparing for the role of Ben Holister Sr. / Pa and his favourite scenes in the movie.
What can we expect from the film Pitchfork?
A cool, modern day slasher that pays tribute to the 80’s slasher films that writer, director, Glenn Douglas Packard grew up on. His love for the genre is easy to see in this film. But he also does a great job of giving us a fresher take on what a slasher film Hero is. Surprises a plenty in this film!
Can you tell me a little bit about your character?

Pitchfork is new slasher style horror from co-writer and director Glenn Douglas Packard, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Glenn about creating the character, what makes Pitchfork stand out in the genre and his favorite scenes in the movie.
What can we expect from Pitchfork?
A new slasher indie horror with a killer you will fall in love with.
How did you come up with the concept for Pitchfork and what were your influences?
Pitchfork had been in my head for 8 years and I was ready to release him. I had seen a rerun of Oprah Winfrey show episode about a boy who was treated as a dog his whole life, and now as a grown man he wrote a book and was helping people that came from child abuse. I thought to myself what if...

Feral forest children with pitchforks for hands. NYC visitors on foreign country turf. Choreographed dance numbers to Andy Grammer’s “Honey, I’m Good.” These are the supposed horrors of Glenn Douglas Packard’s Pitchfork, a new-age slasher film with a barnyard twist. The intent is to create a new breed of slasher icon worth fearing – this “Pitchfork” fellow – but the result is, without argument, an expected January release that silently comes and goes. What starts with a traveling band of “super-woke” city stereotypes ends with the impact of a size 72 font *shrug* emoji, lost amidst stale dialogue, misguided “emotionality” and a base-value representation of “horror.” It’s the kind of genre brand that kills people and assumes it’s enough, while supplemental material is nothing but throwaway repetition.
The film follows a diverse group of friends who travel many miles just to support their friend Hunter (Brian Raetz), since...

Debuting filmmaker Glenn Douglas Packard tries mightily to create a new iconic horror film villain with the title character in his low-budget effort about a maniacal killer sporting a pitchfork for a hand and wearing an animal-fur mask. Alternately registering as an homage and rip-off of the countless slasher pics that have preceded it, Pitchfork is a strictly disposable affair.
The director and co-scripter Darryl F. Gariglio at least attempt to provide some thematic depth to the tale revolving around Hunter (Brian Raetz), a young man who returns to his rural Michigan home after informing his parents and sister that...

I love slasher films. I always have. In fact, I would say that it is the slasher, more than almost any other subgenre, that has defined me as a horror fan. As a fan, my reverence for these oft-maligned films knows no bounds and I find great comfort in revisiting them over and over.
However, as a film-maker, the prospect of actually making a slasher film terrifies me. As much as I want to believe that there is new ground just waiting to be broken, I struggle to see what can still be done with the slasher film. I approach every new entry with the hope that I will find something new, something that...

Never Open the Door Q&A: Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Vito. When did you first come up with the idea for Never Open the Door?
Vito Trabucco: Thanks for having me. A few months prior I completed my first feature, Bloody Bloody Bible Camp. We were just eager to do another one.
