Martin's aunt is stubborn just like he is AND a couple visits to Portwenn have a less than stellar holiday...oh, and Louisa returns.
planktonrules29 January 2016
I'm letting you know up front that I am knocking a point off because this episode features Constable Penhale more than many episodes...and I am becoming more and more annoyed by him. His antics are too sit-com like for my taste and even the worst small town would have a police officer smarter and more competent than this complete idiot. In this episode, the village idiot receives a taser!! And, not surprisingly, he keeps pointing it about like an idiot and, like a total idiot, ends up shooting an innocent person and almost killing them. It is funny, though, that almost everything bad that could happen to this poor women did during her and her husband's vacation with Portwenn Fishing Holidays.

Apart from this, a big theme is the Doc's way of interacting with folks. He diagnoses his aunt with a disease instead of interacting with her in a real conversation--this is important later when it turns out she IS ill. But he also treats Louisa on her return like she is a patient and he's later examining his cute young son like he's a patient...and there's nothing wrong with the boy.

All in all, this is a good episode with too much Penhale. I am sure most folks like him but after being in much of the show this long, I'm finding his stupidity a bit tiresome.

Louisa's Return & the B&B From Hell
Hitchcoc29 March 2018
Louisa returns to the scene. On the surface, nothing has changed. The first thing that Martin does is to examine her, instead of emotionally embracing her. It is obvious that he has great feelings but hasn't a clue. He finally met his therapist in the previous episode and she is going to become a significant part of the series. The more prominent focus is the first set of guests to come to Al Large's B & B. They are exposed to one horror after another, starting with a mouse that appears in the kitchen a few minutes before their arrival. Soon, Al has nearly killed both of them. In a different world, Al would be entering the wide world of litigation. Also, Ruth has been irresponsibly ignored a very serious medical condition. Finally, Bert precipitates another faux pas.

A "Fawlty" episode?
buckythewonderhorse12 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A rodent loose in the hotel, an incompetent restaurant owner who can't supply what is on his menu, and that same restaurant owner starts arguing with his customers. Where have I seen that before? The trials and tribulations of Bert and Al provide some good light moments in Doc Martin, but I think this episode takes it a bit too far, and it is hard to miss the similarities to Fawlty Towers! It does set up some nice moments with Bert and Al in the following episode though.

Cantankerousness does it run in the Ellingham family?
ygwerin118 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Louisa comes back with James to Portwen from Spain, Martin greets his son simply. But one could easily imagine that Martin has precious few feelings for Louisa, as its not exactly apparent by his demeanour. Louisa and Martin decide to spend a little time apart, and she looks for her own place.

Martin's aunt Ruth is showing signs of an illness that Martin is determined to diagnose thoroughly if she will let him. Ruth goes to great pains to hide its existence from Martin, she has got involved in advisory work that will involve her spending time in London.

Al has a married couple as the 1st guests at his B&B, he tries too hard to ensure things work out, but things don't exactly run as smoothly as he had anticipated.

Bert has advertised special deals at his restaurant on the understanding of being able to get his hands on local lobsters, which doesn't actually materialise.

PC Penhale has acquired a new taser and frankly I agree with Bert Large's questioning query, whether he's the right person to have one.

crowbar
mchnive4 April 2022
Another rather lackluster episode with a little bit of comedy but not enough to bring It to a rating of no more than 5 for me.

Louisa and Ruth each need a crowbar to pull their head out of their arse.

Louisa , get a clue - you married a doctor and obviously he loves you very much so quit being such a selfish wench & Ruth , grow up for heavens sake.

We need more Martin/Louisa
nmottel12 March 2022
This episode focused too much on the ancillary characters and not enough on Martin and Louisa. Another reviewer mentioned Falwty Towers. I'd agree with that comparison and throw in the Dead Parrot sketch as Burt dealt with his lobster fiasco. I discoverd Doc Martin in 2022 so I know the episodes are already set in stone but I do hope we get back to more time spent with the central characters. One final thought, was the actor portraying Penhale a relative of the writers? Too much time spent with that idiot character.
