Just an "Eh" kinda film
californiafilm30 September 2017
What was George Romero's son thinking when he decided to produce this film? The movie was just eh. Definitely have seen a lot worse. Don't expect this to be like The Walking Dead or even George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. I was very excited to see Tony Todd in this. Even him couldn't save the film. The acting was not great at all. The lead actor and the villain was just terrible to look at. Tony Todd was the only decent one. They should have recast the whole thing. As far as the action and the gore goes, they should have cast actors that can actually fight or hire doubles. Or even have the actors go through extensive fight training, like Keanu Reeves in John Wick. You can totally tell the actors in this had no fighting background. They couldn't even hurt a fly if they tried. The people who played the zombies that dies help cover up the lead's fighting and the acting skills. All the zombies that died were a lot better actors than the leads like the zombies in the cornfield, the zombie that fell down the stairs "OUCH!", the zombie that went through the windshield "OUCH!", the tomahawk to the head zombie also "OUCH!", and most of all the combine scene was actually a nice touch. It's like they hired amateur/first time actors but hired professional I'm guessing stunt people. I'm assuming those were real stunt people, right? So, kudos to them! The camera work was decent. The set design was pretty damn good for the budget they had on this. The music however was a bit corny and unfitting to the film. The production could have used more of the money and brought on a composer that knows how to score this kind of genre. Don't expect John Williams or Hans Zimmer style of music or even like Halloween's John Carpenter. The directing in this felt a bit rushed. It's like they filmed this in like 2-3 weeks or something and did everything in like 1-2 takes. For a budget in the million, they could have spent more money on filming. Where did the money go? I'd wait until it comes out on Netflix or something.

If George A Romero ever comes back from the dead.....
FrankDamage22 October 2017
... he will undoubtedly be looking to kick his son in the balls for ever allowing the great film making name of Romero to be attached to this fiasco of a film.

First of all, I offer my sympathies to the currently living Tony Todd and wonder, "how dead is his career that he actually took a role in this?" While Todd delivers the only credible performance in this festering cesspool of bad acting/actors it shouldn't be the "selling point" as he seems to be doing his own 'zombie walk' of sorts, even though his role is that of a living survivor.

Todd is no 'Brando' by any stretch, but generally his performances are credible and suitable to the role, as well as effective to the story. In this case his role is minimal (mainly in the opening scene(s) and his delivery pretty much falters from the start and just nosedives by the end of the movie. I think anyone/everyone would see that his presence and name (much like the aforementioned producers namesake) is here to sell the film to fans. My advise would be "don't buy it and even if it's sent to you for free, send it back and demand a refund!"

Clearly the budget for auditions was in the double digits, but fortunately (for no one, including himself) fellow producer Stephen Luke offered his "talents" (and yes, this is a complete bastardization of the definition of that word) as the main lead. When the beautiful Raina Hein (2010 America's Next Top Model finalist) is finally introduced it gives little relief to anything other than the aesthetics. Still, I can't help wonder; with Hollywood's increasing obsession in making practically every female character in every show/film, no matter the genre, into some invincible super heroin, maybe Hein would've/could've been more convincing as the lead and carried the overall movie a little better? At the very least a little gratuitous nudity might have kept it from completely falling into (figuratively speaking) a shallow grave.

On the more positive side, Todd Vance (as Bena's dad) delivers the only performance, in one single particular scene, that might give viewers a chuckle. Yes, a single chuckle. Lastly, fight sequences towards the end seem over choreographed at times, but I've seen worse.

Directing, dialogue, writing and plot (along with subsequent "plot twist") are all as the Brits would say, "complete and utter rubbish." Uninspired, unimaginative and just plain lazy.

I honestly think I would've had a better time digging a hole in my backyard, then having someone bury me alive (don't try this at home kids) and video record me digging my way out, then watching that over and over and over again, than watching a single viewing of this dreadful, undead filled flop.

If zombie fans want excitement I'd suggest going to an open casket wake and standing over the body for a time slightly more than the acceptable limit for a complete stranger. It's certain to deliver a better bloodrush than this movie; which will likely only cause rigor mortis... and not in a good way either.

Don´t Waste Your Time Watching This Flick
claudio_carvalho7 August 2018
What can be written about the awful "Zombies"? The film is so bad that challenges the aspirant writer to find anything reasonable to be said. The screenplay is terrible and seems to be the sequel of another movie, beginning with two men in a cell during a zombie apocalypse. The one-dimension characters have no development and the situations are odd without any explanation. The direction and the acting are also not good and there are many flaws. But the worst is the conclusion, with the fate of the gorgeous Bena and what Luke learns from Sommers. My vote is two.

This is an actual review and not an advertisement. If you like Zombie movies, don't watch this.
djrichert45629 September 2017
I like Zombie movies and when I saw this one had a 7 review I figured I'd give it a try.The acting is horrible. Some people have no business acting, Steven Luke is a prime example. He stumbles through his dialog like some kind of Zombie himself. No sense of timing at all. The FX in this are standard low budget digital crap and the makeup seems to be anemic for a zombie film. I really had to give it a 1 because it really deserves way less than a 7. My honest rating would be a 4.5 out of 10.

One of the best "comedies" of the year!
hlhender2 October 2017
If you're looking for a good zombie movie stay away from this awful film. If there was a script (which I doubt) I assume there was no money in the budget for a script supervisor to monitor continuity. The inconsistencies and time line mistakes drove me crazy. If there was there was a script, I hope the author never writes again. The acting was some of the worst I've ever seen.

Zombies is almost completely lacking in anything original or creative. Even the name is lazy. There's one scene that I have to give some credit for and that was the one involving a combine. It was the one interesting minute in the whole movie and it was, literally, a minute.

If you're looking for a movie full of unintentional hilarity...this is the one for you! I haven't laughed that hard at a movie in years. It may end up a cult classic as one of those "so ridiculously stupid it's funny" movies. My suggestion is to wait for it to come on SyFy or Netflix and turn it on when you need a good laugh.

It would have to be kids
nogodnomasters7 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film starts in the middle of a zombie apocalypse without any build up or known cause. Luke (Steven Luke) and Tony Todd create a safe house and scout for human survivors. Memorable scenes include kids on a bus and driving a combine through a field of zombies.

Tony Todd had a less than stellar role and was rather mundane. Steven Luke didn't exhibit any more life than the zombies. His bath salts joke fell flat. Dialogue was somewhat boring with my favorite character being the old guy sitting on his front porch guarding his beer. The ending has a twist which has been done before and better.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

Horrible Script And Horrible Acting
ap-783605 October 2017
I'm a huge fan of Zombie movies. Zombies was brutally bad. I was only able to get through 25 minutes of the movie before having to turn it off. It was a waste of time and money.

The worst part was the script. It's what you would expect if a 2nd grader wrote a zombie movie. The script was very predictable and cheesy. None of the cast was very convincing. It felt like acting from a local play.

I've seen higher quality videos and production with an iPhone. The video and makeup quality were lacking. Needless to say, it seems like they were on a very tight budget.

Bottom line...Save your money and find another film to watch.

Avoid at all costs
SAJK0071 October 2017
This is the kind of bad that causes embarrassment for the viewer on behalf of those that are acting in it. You can't watch this without wincing at how bad the acting is and wondering what the 'actors' are thinking while they are wandering around trying not to bump into the furniture or look at the camera. I only watched it for 5 minutes but it is 5 minutes I will never recover. Whoever gave this a 10/10 needs help.

Not bad in a sea of VOD zombie/virus films.
amesmonde30 September 2017
A survivor of a virus outbreak goes about finding more uninfected people to come to his sanctuary.

Director/writer Hamid Torabpour offers a competent low budget offering, with plenty of kills, CGI blood, hacking and shooting as survivors take down the zombie-like virus infected hordes. It's played straight, the music, lighting, make up and locations add up to a solid enough production. While it bogs itself down and runs out of steam in the latter half Torabpour still puts in a nice little nihilistic twist in the closing.

It's not a found footage type film like Zombie Diaries or Diary of the Dead. Zombies is an average low budget flick but sadly lost in the sea of substandard DTV zombie film hell. Produced by Cameron Romero (son of the late George A. Romero) it doesn't reach the heights of his father's work or the likes of The Dead or The Battery but thankfully this digital presentation has an almost film like feel appose to the abundance of bland camera work on VOD and SyFy that lack atmosphere.

Veteran horror actor Tony Todd bookends with a welcomed extended cameo as Detective Sommers. Lead Steven Luke's Luke plays the subtler scenes well rather than the action segments. Notable is Amanda Day as Tala but most memorable is Raina Hein's Bena. Despite sporting a zombie cliché killing weapon of choice bow Hein makes the most with what's she's given and offers much of the emotional clout.

Overall, looks good for the budget, don't expect a classic and you may enjoy.

Your every day run-of-the-mill generic zombie movie...
paul_haakonsen18 June 2018
Right, well anyone who knows me or have been tracking my review history knows that I am a big zombie afficianado. And anything even remotely zombiesque is something I have to bite into - pardon the pun.

So when I stumbled upon the 2017 zombie movie titled "Zombies" - how original, I know - and starring iconic horror actor Tony Todd - whom was also in the re-make of "Night of the Living Dead" and in movies such as "Candyman" - then of course I had to sit down and watch "Zombies".

Well, let me just be bluntly honest and say that this was a stereotypical zombie story in every aspect of the genre.

"Zombies" had some adequate acting performance. They did actually have gotten together a good cast ensemble to perform in the movie.

They made use of a mixture of good make-up and special effects, which worked out well enough. But they also made use of horrible gray painted faces with little else, and no. Are you kidding me? That kind of horrible low budget zombie make-up doesn't pass in 2017.

It should be said that "Zombies" does indeed have a very alternative ending and take on a zombie outbreak.

Great B Zombie Movie for Die-Hard Zombie fans!
scottmannen14 August 2019
If you are a die-hard zombie movie fan or even a a Horror B-movie fan then you definitely want to give this one a watch. The firs5 half of the movie moved a little bit slowly, especially with all of the terrible acting and poor writing. The good news is, is that this schlocky film injects a bit of fun finally by adding some great zombie action sequences peppered with a bit of fear.

Candyman (Tony Todd) certainly has certainly been in so many films since that movie. **Goes to check IMDB**. I may not recognize all of the films, but there sure are a lot of them! Especially in the last few years. He was even in the tv show The Orville! Anyways, back to the movie! I am about 20 minutes in so far and will keep you all posted as I continue to get deeper into this film.

****Edit: Halfway through the movie**** Ok, so it's definitely a cheesy B movie...but we already knew that. The film has a fair bit of zombie action which makes it good in my books. Since the movie clearly isn't going anywhere with its poor story writing, below average acting and terrible editing, at least it starts to make up for that by providing decent action sequence(s). The zombie slaying and bashing isn't even choreographed that well, but there is a good scary feel to being trapped in that maze of underground sewer tunnels with all of those hungry undead. Perhaps the second half of the film will continue with as much decent action as the first half? If it does and it continues to pepper all those action scenes with fear then I am ok with that.

There is even some kind of villain woman who has the worst evil fake laugh I have ever heard! She even wears an eyepatch and all black attire! You have to watch the graveyard scene where she starts off by maniacally laughing at our protagonist. The bad acting in this fake evil laughter is borderline legendary! See 48:00 to see what I am talking about! I am talking some real Roger Cornan Plan-9 From Outer Space cheesy laughter! Up to this point they just killed the main villain in a graveyard full of zombies, so unless she manages to somehow come back from the dead with her human intelligence, we are basically out of bad guys, out of story arc and just plain out of everything as they are all used up!

Unless our villain returns from the dead (quite possible) then that would certainly put more logs onto the fire allowing this film to continue forwards from here-on until the end. So I bid you adieu until the end of this movie, where I will come back to edit this comment for a final remaining 50% of the movie in review!

*****Edit: Final 50% of the film:*****. Surprisingly the rest of the movie is jam packed with action! As mentioned I am totally ok with this because the acting sucks, the writing and editing suck, but the action is great, even better than the first half of the film! I would be remiss if I didn't mention the part where our hero hops into a piece of farm equipment...a combine no-less and begins mowing down zombies by the hundreds! They call the machine a "Zombine" instead of a combine! For hardcore zombie film aficionados I know you are going to love this part as blood and guts go flying literally everywhere!

Ok the good news is that the final 50% is all action except for the ending which has one heck of a twist in it. I like that they did that twist too! A lot of people didn't like that twist of an ending, but i sure did! Anytime a movie can touch on emotions means that the movie is good enough for you to connect with it. It has a great ending and makes this entire B Zombie movie worth the watch. If you are a die hard zombie film aficionado then this film is a must see and comes recommended. As I am a zombie aficionado I enjoyed it and rate this film 6.5/10, which is a fairly high rating as far as B zombie movies go. Watch it! If you aren't a zombie fan then you should probably avoid it. If you are a B horror movie fan, then it's also recommended. Everyone else avoid this movie like the plague!

I only recommend seeing this is you're a Tony Todd super fans.
kevin_robbins24 January 2022
Zombies (2016) is a movie I recently watched on Tubi. The storyline follows a group of survivors fleeing the city during a zombie outbreak. They flee to an old farmhouse confused about their circumstances and whether or not to kill the zombies. As a herd of zombies bare down on them they are going to need to make some tough decisions and make them fast.

This movie is directed by Hamid Torabpour (Every Color) in his directorial debut and stars Tony Todd (Candy Man), Steven Luke (Dust of War), Raina Hein (To Say Goodbye) and Aundrea Smith (Diary of a Future President).

The storyline for this is absolutely dreadful and the acting is almost as bad. Tony Todd was awesome but surrounded by complete amateurs that couldn't feed off his greatness causing the film to fall flat. The zombie flesh eating scenes were okay but couldn't offset how annoying the main character was. This definitely has a made for TV or college class project feel to it.

Overall I'd score this a 3/10 and only recommend seeing it to Tony Todd super fans.

Is this what passes for originality nowadays?
ollie_eth30 September 2017
After observing the summaries, character names, themes, and the title of the film in general, I can already see it is an abundance of clichés and cheap attempts at intense violence and in-depth story lines. Only getting as far as the trailer, I refuse to waste my time on such an overused film concept while I could just as easily be watching something I haven't already seen thirty times. "Zombies invade the world, it's up to a group of survivors to save civilisation," sound familiar?

I found this one pretty funny and dumb as heck. There was no sense of urgency. To escape or kill the zombies. Just a very blahhhhhh movie. Best part was the board in the country battle. Lol.

Watch it!
nye-6831122 October 2016
One of my new favorite zombie movies, it lives up to it's name in regards to content, ZOMBIES! My favorite parts are the school bus scene ;) and the unexpected twist at the end. <3 The movie is set in a small town and does not need to use fancy special effects or excessive digital art to portray a very realistic setting. This low budget film stars the one and only Tony Todd, Todd plays a detective in a world full of blood thirsty zombies, he actually plays a "good guy" in this film. The movie has a few story lines but nothing too deep, this is the type of movie I would buy to keep on my shelf and watch when I'm in "a good zombie movie" watching mode.

Hard Core Zombie Fans Can Overlook AND Enjoy
tdwillis-262732 October 2017
The action starts right off in this movie, and although it is a lower budgeted film and the acting is no where near Oscar winning level, there is quite a bit to enjoy in this movie if you are a hard core zombie fan.

There are some very nicely done camera work. The special effects are simple but believable and works well to keep you invested in the story. There are lots of action scenes with plenty of extra's/undead to keep you entertained. The story line tries very hard to add substance to the movie. There are some humorous moments and one liners to tickle you funny bone. Sound is very good.

As long as you don't compare it to TWD and perhaps have had an unfulfilled hunger for zombies so strong , that you have watched every stinky BAD zombie movie that every Joe Blow has thrown together then you will enjoy this movie. (Of the MANY lower budgeted Zombie Movies I have watched, there are some REALLY BAD ones. This is one of the better ones.

Nothing new, but competently done and hence a lot of fun
Woodyanders5 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Martial artist Luke (a solid and likeable performance by Steven Luke) joins forces with Detective Simmons (a lively portrayal by Tony Todd) and other survivors to find and protect people from an outbreak of lethal zombies.

Writer/director Hamid Torabpour relates the familiar, but still enjoyable story at a brisk pace, delivers plenty of gory carnage, maintains a grimly serious take-no-prisoners tone throughout, further spices things up with a refreshing sense of self-mocking humor, and pulls off a startling bleak twist at the end. The sound acting by the capable cast helps a lot: Raina Hein as the feisty Bena, Amanda Day as the sullen Tala, Marcus Dee as Luke's infected buddy Dave, Heide Fellner as the unhinged and vengeful Haley, and Todd Vince as Bena's gung-ho redneck dad. So while this film doesn't break any new ground in the zombie horror genre, it nonetheless still hits all the essential bases in an efficient manner and therefor is worth a watch for zombie horror fans.

Wow, how you can you be a horror fan and rate this one so low?
brianh56714 May 2018
This is at least a solid 5 in my book, I gave it 6 because the average is unjustly low. I was surprised to see it rated so low on average when I checked the imdb site. If you are a horror fan and like zombie movies, it was definitely worth watching.

A brave attempt!
johnarmitage-9797825 September 2020
This should have been a very big budget movie... The source material demands it. In Dead Pulse there are a lot of set pieces. This film sadly does not have that scale. That being said the film is undeserving of such a low score over all as it is a brave attempt to at least get itto the screen.

Decent for a low budget film if you are a zombie genre fan.
vitalymakievsky24 June 2023
Yes the acting isn't very good the script could have been polished up, and I don't think the director is good at all, as a writer he is definitely better.

But it is a low budget film, and you have to understand how difficult to make a decent move on a low budget! Firstly, you are working under very limited time constrains...meaning less takes and do overs. Secondly, you can't afford decent actors who can do a good scene under 10 takes. Nor, you can afford various advisors. Just the camera, sound, and lighting cost a fortune...and limits your filming time.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I think it could have been significantly better if the director scaled the film back a bit. He tried to make it look big budget, but should have scaled it bit down a bit.

By the way, why in all these post-apocalyptic the characters just drop all the high quality weapons when the ammo runs out!!! It's just dumb. Hell, you can even easily manufacture your own ammo.
