After what the fans considered a slow start, FEAR THE WALKING DEAD, really ramped itself up as the season went along and finished strong with two hour finale that had plenty of action and a high death count, including one regular who had been with us from the beginning. It also gave us plenty of gore and Walkers, something earlier episodes too often lacked, as skulls were crushed, noses and fingers bitten off and eyes gouged out.
Being the finale of a WALKING DEAD show, of course everything just had to go to hell as safe havens crumbled and our protagonists had to hit the road. There was some major character development, especially in the case of Travis, who truly broke bad on Brandon and Derek after he found out what they'd done to his junior psycho son Chris. This former high school English teacher will never be the same person again, and this is all for the better as he and Madison are now truly on the same page and are is no longer under any illusions that the old world is coming back. They are in place where both of them can go forward together to face the horrors of the Zombie Apocalypse. I feel right now that if anyone threatens their family two in Season Three, it will not be pretty. Then there is the big hint Madison dropped that there is some real darkness in her past, something fans have suspected from the beginning. I still wonder if her maiden name back in Alabama wasn't Dixon.
The other big character focus in this show was Nick Clark, Madison's missing son, who had found a home with Alejandro and Luciana's group. But as with the way of both Walking Dead shows, home doesn't stay home for very long, and ultimately it was Nick who did the right thing (or tried to) after almost cutting and running. But as always with this franchise that new safe haven just over the horizon (remember Terminus?) turns out to be anything but. I loved Nick's character arc over this whole season, as the former junkie screw up had risen to the challenge of this deadly new world; and the producers gave Nick one of the goriest Walker kills ever in the finale. Also liked how they let Alejandro redeem himself after all his deceptions and sacrifice himself for his people and take out the gang members at the same time.
What I didn't like was the way they killed off Chris in a flashback, and in a truck crash no less, where he had to be put down Brandon and Derek. Chris was someone fans loved to hate and had generated the most intense reaction all through season two; after his final scene with Travis, we all primed something epic from Chris and the resolution just didn't satisfy.
What also didn't satisfy was Victor Strand and his decision to stay at the hotel after Travis, Madison and Alicia decided to hit the road; Strand and Madison had great chemistry working together and it will be missed. Hopefully there will be a reunion next season.
And as for next season, this finale left everyone in an uncertain situation to say the least. It does not look good for Nick, Luciana and the rest when they ran into those last ditch border guards; who captured Orfelia and what have they done with her? Will we see Daniel again, as it has been hinted at; how about Tobias, haven't forgotten about him.
One suggestion: it's time to stop overusing the guts trick, it has gotten old.
