The Black Sky

As much as the second half of the season has been a step back from the first 4 episodes, it still has its great moments. "The Dark at the end of the Tunnel" was easily one of the best episodes of the season, setting up what should be an incredible finale.

Much like we got a Stick centric flashback episode in season 1, we got just that with an Elektra themed flashback here. It played out similar to Matt's last season, the main difference being that Elektra was a killer in her young age and a wanted commodity, but the feeling was still the same. The fights are always good in this show, and were quite good all episode, but I found the fights with young Elektra to be particularly impressive. Plus, more Scott Glenn is always a good thing.

Karen continued her efforts in putting together a story on Frank, which ultimately may have sent her to her breaking point. I'm kind of tired of the whole Karen going after Frank thing, but where we leave Karen off in this episode is a very dark place. And I think that will culminate in a far more interesting future for her character.

Frank put the finishing touches to Clancy Brown's character after realizing his involvement in the killings of his family at the park and being "The Blacksmith". I have to say, after an entire season focused on Frank tracking down those involved, I felt as though the final blow was a little anti-climactic. Brown's performance was great, but I think we needed a better end.

Nonetheless, Frank finds all of the so called 'Punisher gear' so it should be a balls out finale, especially with Elektra seemingly staying on Daredevil's side of things.

Warning: Spoilers
One would know that something is off when opening shots are dedicated to lingering view of unknown body while the show hides Frank Castle, who obviously would not die from random explosion. Not to mention the meeting with Colonel who supported Castle seems like a dinner invitation from Hannibal. It just reeks of treason and deception, and it actually is.

The bulk of this episode concentrates on Elektra, much of the flashbacks are her strange childhood, which give a more parental relationship with Stick. Credit goes to the child actress, she looks cold and confused but she shows a lot of chemistry within the short time spent with Stick. I daresay it's more connection than adult Elektra has, at least at her current condition which is constant scuffle.

It also deals with sporadic skirmishes between Daredevil and the ninja teams. There's gimmick in used to make the fights different, which cooperate the sound mixing quite well. The torture scene with Stick is compellingly gruesome, after the blood draining ritual I'll admit that these ninjas are capable of making me cringe, and it's not just random gore, but the slow implementation of it that works.

Ultimately, it all comes down to Elektra. She might not be strong as Punisher, but her story does expose more ideology from Daredevil and a proper portrayal of tough female.

Great chapter. Fight scenes are really enjoyed. Elektra was able to reconsider and is finally on the good side. Or so I hope.

Mediocrity [6.5/10]

Live Reaction / Review for Daredevil Season 2 Episode 12: Episode 11 was ok but nothing great, I hope this one is good. So Elektra when she was a little girl was able to beat 3 adult men at the same time? Ridiculous. Does that mean more Elektra in this episode? Oh no! Seeing the relationship between Matt and Foggy falling apart is hard to watch. So Karen is now a reporter? Ok. How to ruin an episode? It's easy, make it full of Elektra and Stick. Elektra is the Black Sky? A bit confused about what that means, what's going on? Some ok fight scenes but overall this episode is very mediocre. I liked seeing Frank but I hate both Stick and Elektra at this point. These characters have ruined much of the season for me. My rating is 6.5/10.

Slight step down

A slight step down here, although overall it's engaging enough. I felt that the conclusion of the Blacksmith sub-plot was an anticlimax despite the typical strong performance of guest actor Clancy Brown. The Elektra/Stick storyline brings plenty of melodrama and action, and we're left looking forward to the climax.
