Why we don't watch movies like these?

We talk about culture and our heritages, we talk about our great past but when it comes to movies like these which show us the mirror, what we have become and where we are leading, we start looking on the other side. This film shows how India has changed in just a decade or two. And it all happened so fast that we just could not find a balance.

Mohalla Assi might not be a technically great film, it might not have best of the actors or direction but it conveys what it intends to. It raises few very pertinent questions about social structure, culture, greed, religious sentiments and most importantly about human behavior.

Watch it. Offer it your time. Taste this part of India. You will not be disappointed

Kashi Ka Assi, a no-holds-barred, insightful take on a Varanasi locality seen through the prism of India's political and economic churn in the 1990s.

the movie will make you laugh out loud at times and then make you feel very emotional and attached.

The movie will take you down the road of how our culture was, and what changed it in a way.

Movie that portrays the real face of Benaras and life of Ghat.

Overall Movie is very good but will not do well at the box office due to poor promotions.,, even maker did not promote the film..

Performance wise Sunny Deol is good & Shashi Tanwar and ravi Kishan did well too.

Quite a good movie. Don't believe critics who were not able to understand the work here. Movie shows the changing scenario of a locality during a time period. Dr. Dwivedi is a brilliant director and he proves it yet again.

The Content is very strong.

Though the screenplay & editing weren't that good, movie did seem to be of a low budget. But The content & dialogues were too good. This movie showed the complexity, issues our culture faces in Globalised India.

Reality of Kashi, Varanasi and the whole of India

This is a fantastic adaptation of Dr. Kashinath Singh's satire "Kashi Ka Assi". Well directed. The performance by each and every actor is very relatable to anyone who is familiar with the tradition Brahmin sections of India. One quote got stuck in my mind - "in past we used to have Bazaar's in our communities, now the each community is struggling to to breathe in the global Bazaar(Marketplace)". This one quote reflects the struggle each Indian is facing in preserving our traditions and fulfilling our aspirations. India is no more a country where its tradition and rituals get patronage of the rich, unless it becomes commercial. This has become a land where a learned priest who follows all the tenets of his religion is poor while a half baked guru peddling nonsense is rich with money and millions of followers.

Sunny Deol, the action hero as we know him, has delivered a perfectly controlled and superb performance. The supporting cast of Sakshi Tanwar, Ravi Kishan and the rest are equally good.

This is a must see, and is sad to see not one review for this movie on IMDb, while the mindless action films like Dabbang get hundreds. This is exactly what this movie is about - the modern Indian does not care about his society, its traditions and culture.

Wish to see more movies like this one.

I really don't know why such movies are appreciated ! I genuinely thought that the movie was good not bad at all , performance by sunny and saakshi was very good !

Poor production

There is nothing much in the story to make a movie out of it. Even so, could have been made better like earlier Benaras etc. Just by making cast spew out cuss words in every sentence doesn't make it realistic. Poor production. Gave one star, as story theme had potential to make a very short film.

Misleading Trailer of a wonderful movie

When the trailer came out I was pretty disappointed and expected it to be another PK, a forced comedy at cost of ridiculing one religion. I still watched the movie for Chandraprakash Dwiwedi since I consider him to be a non commercial director who gave us Chanakya and he did not disappoint.

The movie turned out to be entirely refreshing experience.

Sunny Deol lives with his wife on a hand to mouth existence in Benaras because he does not want to compromise on his values.

He sees people giving in to their aspirations and leading a better life and one day is compelled to take the same route when he decides to move with times.

But you cant suppress your inner soul and one day he returns to his original faith and finds peace.

Don't want to give out details of story since its not yet released but would surely call this Sunny Deol's best performance till date.

There is nothing in the movie that mocks any religion and the scene where lord Shiva abuses Sunny Deol is in a different context altogether and very very relevant, in fact one of the finest scene of the movie.

Hope it releases one day and when it does, don't miss it.

Unnecessary abuse

Kids in India get aroused when they hear abuse in movies and behave as if that abusing is only required talent for a good movie.

The movie has zero percent relation with shree ram mandir and is just another stupid script with waste of talent. Sunny did a good job in acting. Parvati :-p did some overacting.

The movie could have done well if there was less abuse. It is ok if you miss this

Test of faith in the struggles of life

Director Chandraprakash Dwivedi beautifully recreates the Mohalla Assi in this religious/political satire based the novel Kashi Ka Assi. The neighborhood of Assi itself is the protagonist of this movie. The identity of Assi is not just defined by the fact that it is ghat along the holy river, rather it is the also the people who live in that locality. People participate in daily "parliamentary discussions" on the changing society and importance of culture at the only place in Varanasi that has democracy, Pappu's tea shop. The characters in the tea shop look straight out of a satire novel in Hindi. The conversations at this shop tie the whole script together and take the story forward. What makes it worth watching is the context that is set around it. It also tries to depict the impact that major religion- based political events had on the people of the society. The humor is very intelligent and contextual, since it is a satire.

The story of the movie was a simple one, where a diligent and honest priest struggles to make ends meet, whereas other half baked gurus dupe the tourists to mint money and lead a comfortable life. It shows how westerners come to the city in search of spirituality and have no clue about what they want. How the city in its own corrupt ways connives to thug them, thereby destroying the moral fabric of it's culture one bit at a time. Ravi Kishan and other supporting characters deliver a wonderful performance as the whole locality revolves around these tourists.

Sunny Deol as the righteous priest beautifully projects the perplexities that the character goes through as he comes to term with the practical challenges of life. However, it is Sakshi Tanwar, as his wife, who really delivers a stand out performance, questioning his eccentricities and still standing by him as a pillar of support. Together they go through their struggles, to find a way to live with their values in this world.

The film got banned because of the cuss words used in the movie, but as a character says that in the culture of Varanasi, everyone is greeted with "bhosadi k" just like they are greeted with "Har Har Mahadev".

Comedy and Sunny are 2 different things.

Watched but not happy.. Sunny kindly bring back something like Damini, Ghayal 1, Gadar, Ghayal 2 was messed, then these things hack your image.. From a fan.. I got suggestions do check with me.

This movie is made by the perspective of bhramins ,showing them as a victims of everything even though the commerciation of the ganga was only benefitting to the bhramins,the babari majih demolition is show as a good thing in the movie and there is not Muslim perspective during the ram mandir March scene , but still movie trys to balance think from both sides from right and left. As it is a bhramins movie it criticized the reservation very much and the communist.

Tone, Script & Story: When I first watched the trailer I was like whoa is there some neighborhood that foul mouthed settled near the bank of Ganges speaking out similar repeating foul. Well what I got to know online it's not (it's the general foul like every other neighborhood). If we keep aside that, it gives us a good picture what happened to locality (mohalla) near 'assi ghat' for a period of ten years or so.

Every bunch of people has their location to hang out, so is in this movie pictured well. I just did not like the scene where every one lies about the dream (people are not like that), but thanks there is still someone who clings on to their faith.

Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography: It is very good. It gives us the essence of Indian culture with some really good locations. Music: It is good. Acting: It is justified.

Final Verdict: If you can avoid the hiccups it is a good treat.

Sunny Deol is a misplaced casting here and Sakshi Tanwar, the best. The concept is very nice but execution has faltered immensely. Too many themes were touched upon which made it a mess. The second half is hugely disappointing. Has lots of explicit slangs and I failed to understand how they added anything to the script.

More movies like this should be made.

The director of the movie, Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, did not dissapoint at all. The quirkiness of the movie can be seen in the trailer but the soul of the mvie can only be realised after watching it. The life of people in the holy place Kashi is depicted in such a real and simplistic way. Fantastically made with very different characters in the movie who just lightens up the whole thing. Sunny paaji in a whole new avatar, loved to see him. Sakshi Tanwar, as always brilliant. It fascinating to see these type of movies in this time. More movies like this should be made. The wait was worthwhile. Enjoyed it.

Real & Honest picturisation of Holi city Kashi

Picturisation of kashi looks real .Background score is good . all characters are given ample space & they prove themselves.. sunny deol portrays very confidently role of Panda & In last emotinals scenes are MindBlowing.. Superb

The movie revolves around the story of Kashi. It starts from the year 1988... still looks so fresh. The direction was so good that it seems as if I am just watching something happening next door. Superb natural acting by everyone. This shows how the culture degraded as the people had corrupted minds. The film is very beautifully made and very simply laid in front of us. You must go and watch.

This type of movie do 200 or 300 crores of business. These movies make contribute to movie industry as meaningful cinema. But people these days like 'Varun shawn, Salman khan, shahrukh khan'. Movie are reflections of current society. But very sad, some very good movie like this one, don't do good on box office and after that 'Producer-directors ' not willing to make this type of movies anymore. We all should appreciate this type of movies and bring them into the hit list, if we want to watch more movies like this. I believe my comments said all about this movie. Super good meaningful cinema.

Superb movie

The reality in every sense is so beautifully depicted that you get to see a whole another world yet at the same time it looks like, you know these characters from your own life. The crookedness in the minds of corrupted and the integrity of a man... the movie will make you laugh out loud at times and then make you feel very emotional and attached. The movie will take you down the road of how our culture was, and what changed it in a way. Superb acting and direction.... It felt so natural even if the actors were in very different avatars. Loved it.

Movie is brilliant because it is based on a masterpiece novel (Kashi Ka assi). A worth watching movie to get a closer view of kashi. Direction is good but what disappointed me was the acting of Sunny Deol but other characters played good. Sakshi Tanwar was brilliant. After all if u have little knowledge about indian politics then its a must watch movie.
