Season 11 has largely been underwhelming, with a few good to great episodes but also too many mediocre to bad ones (the bad ones being among the show's worst).
The season did start off promisingly with "The Job" and "The Witness", before falling drastically downhill with "Till Death Do Us Part" and most of the episodes between that and "Entropy" not being much better. "Entropy", one of the best episodes in recent years, was a big return to form, but unfortunately it was a brief one after another underwhelming episode in "Drive".
As far as Season 11 goes, "The Night Watch" is not quite good enough to be one of the best episodes but it is in the better half of the season that doesn't commit quite as many errors as the worst episodes of the season did. There are flaws certainly, with the portrayal of Detroit being somewhat clichéd and out of date and some details that don't hold up, such as how and why the baby was abducted, the motive for the murder of the rival and the rather abrupt mental break of the unsub with the trigger poorly done.
Lewis still bothers me, generally being a stiff, dull and disconnected character who doesn't gel very much with the team. There is also too much of her, and some of her lines does make one cringe (such as the one about losing 185 pounds overnight). Aisha Tyler's performance is not much better.
However, "The Night Watch" as ever looks great, made with a lot of style and class, and the music is hauntingly moody. Nice to hear "Non Piu Andrai" from one of Mozart's masterpieces 'Le Nozze Di Figaro", though Sumi Jo's crediting is odd, seeing as the aria is for a baritone and Jo is a colouratura soprano. Thomas Gibson does a nice job directing. Speaking of Gibson, after seeing Hotch practically invisible for a long time it was nice to see more of him as a leader and to see him smile.
On top of that, there are some thought-provoking moments in the script that has more emphasis on profiling than there has been in a while. The story, apart from some sloppy details, is compelling enough with some suspense, making less of a mistake than previous episodes of being too unsub-heavy. Excepting Tyler, the acting is fine, and goodness isn't that baby cute or what? In conclusion, falls short of greatness but as far as Season 11 episodes go "The Night Watch" is by far one of the better ones.
