Starting to Lose Interest

I'm not entirely sure why I'm still reviewing this show, let alone watching it, alas 'Progeny' is another misstep for what is becoming such a disappointing show. I'll likely stick it out for the rest of the season, but if there's no shakeup in the writers room or even some of the actors, I won't be back for season 2.

On the bright side, at least the team decided to take their travels to the future for once, this time being 2147. The mission to take down Savage's protégé (a young boy) seemed a bit weird, and overly Terminator-like, but I was up for the change. For the most part, the future aspects of the episode worked. I was glad to see an actual futuristic world setting for a show that seemed to promise so much of it from the beginning. It was also nice seeing Jewel Staite, from Firefly fame, make an appearance. But with so much of the focus being on Rip Hunter and also pointless flashbacks, it was a challenge to get through.

Why in the world do I care about more Kendra and Carter back-story? I'm so done caring about that relationship. I understand that we 'needed' to see it to have closure for that romance so that we can care about her and Ray, but even that romance feels forced. Sadly, this show isn't fun enough to really overcome some of those weaknesses (which is part of the reason why I waited so long to watch this episode).

On the other-hand, I did like the Snart/Mick banter this week. Sara served as the messenger of sorts between the two, and that stuff really worked. Those are pretty much the only characters on the show that the writers have gotten right, and even Sara has had her ups and downs.

The future apparently has plenty of Ray's suits flying around making sure there is order in 2147, which gave us some of the only action of the episode. Surprisingly, the effects looked rather sharp, but it's hard to care about a fight scene if you don't really care about anything leading up to it. Overall, it's yet another filler episode that did absolutely nothing to further the plot off the season. If only the focus of the show would stick to the Snart/Mick relationship.

+Snart/Mick

+Some decent CGI

-Flashbacks were awful

-Did nothing to further the plot

The Good, The Bad And The Polarizing

The tenth episode of Legends Of Tomorrow, titled "Progeny", definitely has its ups and downs. My opinion is divided, but ultimately there was more good to it than bad, so my vote is 7. Without giving away any spoilers, here's what I didn't like about the episode:

Most of the episode relied on a moral conflict that was based on very flawed logic. I can't go into detail without giving away the plot, but given the facts of the situation, the characters' choices don't make sense. This sort of thing doesn't usually bother me, especially in a series like this, but in this particular episode the lack of logic is so clear it becomes a bit annoying. The story also completely negates the ending of the previous episode. At the end of episode 9, Rip makes a big deal of not going to the year 2147 before since it's so dangerous. This made me excited, but Rip's warning turns out to be quite wrong, as this journey becomes one of their safest ones. The time period had some threats to it, but nothing that the previous episode made it sound like.

Then for the things I liked. This basically includes everything else in the episode. The scenes with Ray Palmer realizing what his inventions have become were great, and Brandon Routh's acting was the best it has been so far. The flashbacks to Kendra and Carter were also well done, as it provided both depth to Kendra's character and gave closure to Carter. I also enjoyed the scenes between Leonard and Mick, who are both going through well-written character arcs. This episode also had good special effects, which went well with the extremely entertaining action sequence towards the end. Ten episodes into the series, it's still thrilling to watch the heroes using their powers in fighting sequences.

All things considered, this was my least favorite episode of the show so far. It wasn't too bad though, and I'm still definitely looking forward to the rest of the season. I've heard rumors of a certain classic DC character appearing in the next episode, so that's something to look forward to.

The story is very weak this go round. The premise is: If you could go back in time and kill someone who would eventually murder millions of people would you do it? But the writers never expand on this. We expect because, ultimately, it is beyond their imagination.

Maybe killing Hitler causes 1,000 more "Hitlers" to be born? Who knows?

Maybe one of them starts a nuclear war that destroys Earth? Who knows?

That's only two generations.
