"Lucifer:" The most original pilot I've seen in years.
mrei-7241826 January 2016
The titular character Lucifer is marvelously played by Tom Ellis, who I whole-heartedly believe could have competed for a "Best TV Actor - Comedy" Golden Globe, had the show chosen to premiere in the fall, rather than as a mid-season replacement. "Lucifer" already has it's back against the wall. But perhaps it's slotting right behind the monster ratings galore X-Files reboot can proof beneficial. Lucifer, his new pals, and their real-life counterparts appear eagerly determined to achieve one synonymous end-goal: Humorously investigating crimes, long past the current calendar year.

Lucifer is not the star of a one-man, "National Lampoon's Earth Vacation" act, however. He is accompanied by a female bartender named Maze. During the fast-paced expository scenes, Lucifer is shown as owning his own nightclub and having a knack for playing the piano. He regularly performs with an old pal-turned superstar musician named Delilah, whose sudden murder triggers the chain of events which eventually land Lucifer as an official consultant for the LAPD.

He possesses the supernatural ability to reel in the inner-desires of his acquaintances, who seemingly lose all sense of discreteness and filtering whilst conversing with Lucifer. The "man" is just plain irresistible, both physically to the woman he encounters, and aesthetically to viewers like me, who take it upon themselves to adequately analyze this creature masquerading as a human. Its almost like Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, and the animated representation of Satan from South Park all decided to combine the three of their personalities together, while sitting around a coffee table, smoking marijuana, and watching police procedural dramas.

Lucifer's devilish personality undergoes some minor adjusting when he meets Chloe Dancer, a detective uniquely impervious to Lucifer's manipulative wits. I am not sure if Lucifer and Chloe should go full cliché mode and turn their bickering and banter-filled professional partnership into a romantic one later on in the series. I also believe the writing staff should be particularly careful with their treatment of Lucifer's blatantly foreshadowed, "round character" transformation.

I hope the remainder of the season is able to maintain the balance of both good humour and excellent story progression its premiere outing showcased. If it appears ill-fated to crash headfirst into "dumped show status," I hope the writers will be given enough notice to prepare a proper send-off to Lucifer. The show is either modern ingeniousness, or simply evil-reincarnated. No comedies debuting in January are this good anymore, without there being a catch involved. Hopefully, if the other shoe beings to drop at some point, Lucifer's brother Amenadiel will slow down time, so one of the hellish "humans" roaming the earth can "catch" it before it falls.

The Devil is here
Yazanmomani-125-43502021 January 2016
Lucifer Morningstar is the devil who has decided to leave hell and live in Los Ageles....yes I know what you may think... I mean what kind of show is this? well your wrong, and the reason is because this is simply an awesome unique kind of show that you need to at least give a shot... you will be attached to the characters and the episode leaves you no time to blink. I honestly feel that Tom Ellis was born to perform this role. I certainly hope that the show stays the same after this perfect pilot.

Lucifer has a great potential and I'm really excited for the next episodes. Bring it on Lucifer... and please don't let us down.

What more can I ask
AvidWatcher10112 August 2020
Looking for something that would hold my attention after a disappointing first ep of Dark. Thought this might be a bit hokey but decided to give it a shot - and what a nice surprise. It's fresh, clever, interesting - and it has that extra something that keeps me watching. It's entertaining. What more can I ask of a TV show.

A Devil of a Pilot!
VPenndragon11 April 2020
The Devil's left Hell you say? Well he may have left Hell, but he surely brought the "HOT" with him!

Tom Ellis is the epitome of a "class act" as Lucifer Morningstar. From the moment we see his shiny, classic, Black 1962 Corvette being driven on Sunset Blvd., to the upbeat tempo of the music on the radio, if you're like me, you are immediately hooked into what you feel is going to be a VERY wild ride! But, when the Devil opens his mouth to speak? The soothing English accented voice and Lucifer's flawless face captivate you and you are drawn in a little bit more.

The series is filled with great characters one can easily attach, and relate to, features GREAT writing, and some FANTASTIC music selections. Put all this together and you have the makings for an EPIC MASTERPIECE that will bring you back, episode after episode.

Prepare yourself for the BEST SERIES EVER and BUCKLE UP for the GREATEST RIDE you'll ever go on!

Fresh and Inviting
dariavandermerwe29 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
People are surely overreacting over this. It is a fresh spin on TV. It's funny yet can go into seriousness. People always judge the devil based on a 3000 year old book. Although this show does still show a menacing and evil side to Lucifer. It shows he has a good and remorseful side as well. A side to Lucifer we've never seen. It has the ability to change people's perspective on Lucifer. The creators have a good show on their hands. Just don't make this into a love story cliché. I saw he became a bit nice at times especially when the detective gets involve. He tries a bit to hard to have her like him. Keep his sarcastic persona. Hope it won't disappoint anytime soon.

I was immediately drawn to the magnetic personality of Lucifer
jetkot21 May 2019
Lucifer has a magnetic personality and charm. Tom Ellis looks adorable and his dialouge delivery is flawless. The show has a very original concept. The plot thickens beautifully from Episode to Episode. The first episode sets things up for us. I am in love with this show

"Pull Yourself Together"
croakedit24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Entertainer owes Lucifer a favour. She is scared but what he wants is for her to "pull herself together because she is wasting her life and talent". That's a moment I love in this episode. So what is this devil REALLY about? Hmmm...

A Pleasant Surprise
nebohr17 May 2020
Lucifer's opening conversation with the motorcycle cop struck me as both funny and appropriately honest for the situation; that was when I decided: maybe this series would be worth my time. The characters are fleshed-out; from the lead- and supporting actors on down.

He is charming, isn't he?
tenshi_ippikiookami24 June 2016
Well, Lucifer is bored. All those millennia in hell, without much to do but being bad has made him take an extreme decision: give up on his job and open a club on Earth. But when one of his former workers, now a pop star, ends killed, he decides to take justice in his own hands.

Kind of.

This pilot is a good introduction to the characters, and to the basic idea of the show. But at the same time seems to suffer of "procedural syndrome", and it will be interesting to see if the show can overcome it.

Having a character with powers that let him bring the most secret passions of humans to the light is an OK touch, not very original, but decent. Having him partner with a person to whom "he" actually can't do it can be accepted (secrets there, for future episodes, anyone?). But falling into the most typical: go from one place to the other and other and then back is not very original, and reeks of predictability. Five minutes in and we have fallen into the typical traps of a cop show.

The two principal actors, Lucifer's Tom Ellis, and Decker's Lauren German do an OK job, but nothing otherworldly. Tom Ellis is particularly bland in this pilot, which doesn't offer many assurances for his character in future episodes. But as it is just the pilot, the acting (and the banter between both characters) could improve in future episodes.

For now, it's an acceptable start, with danger of falling into repetition. Let's see.

Hooked From Start to Finish
sexysorceress12 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'd seen commercials of the show before but didn't watch until it came onto Netflix. I was immediately hooked. Tom's voice and charisma are enchanting, whether he's bribing a traffic cop or scaring a weasel record producer, you can't help but watch him. The humor was well placed and I chuckled hardcore when he was in the rap house. Plus the obvious connection between him and Chloe from the start was heartwarming....will always wonder if Dan explains to Trixie what a hooker is

Great show!
thruxley29 September 2022
What can I say? This is a uniquely creative show, and this is just the judgmental honeymoon faze? That's exactly right. This show wins you over pretty quickly, even though it has one of the weirdest character dynamics you'll ever see on television.

Tom Ellis plays Lucifer AKA the devil and does it in a fantastically humorous way. His character may be annoying and evidently immature around Chloe (the detective), but it is done purposely to create playful banter that you just can't get enough.

This show main premise is that any person can change and be redeemed. Lucifer is a deeply misunderstood devil, which is humanized by his desire to be... well, understood. He's not evil, but he's represented as evil. If you watch the show, you'll know the difference. Watch it and find out.

Slow start but grew in me as I continued watching
Loma7230 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Lucifer starts up as a very cocky and annoying, typical american lead role, yet as the episode rolls on we learn more from him and how he morphs other people to his will by locking eyes (and we are shown how someone can prevent his control by avoiding eye contact). Chloe is a very though policewoman with a troubled past and a complicated familiar situation, having a 7 year old daughter and an ex husband in competition with as he's working in the police department as well. The plot that will follow us throughout the series is introduced to us by presenting Lucifer's brother who tells him he's needed back to Hell because his departure would mean that all the demons that were there would come out to haunt earth. The setting is in LA, where real world pop culture is common but we also have fictional celebrities, such as the girl who's killed in the episode and who our two main characters are trying to find out who the murder was, throughout a pretty intricate web of sex drama. Funny ending with the therapist, whom Lucifer promised a night in the paradise of sex in exchange for an important detail in the lead they were following, who gets her wish granted. Slow start but grew in me as I continued watching

Pilot: A fresh start, quirky, intelligent, fast camera works, nice photography and aerial shots, charming lead Scorpio character with big chemistry with the Sagittarius beautiful detective.

Definitely has potential if the clash between the "dark angel" and him doesn't get repetitive.

"What is this a wedding or a kidnapping?"
ygwerin125 October 2022
With the subject matter of this show and the Devil posed as the central character it should be absolutely no surprise to anyone, that at least some viewers will choose to watch with the Christian good book, the bible firmly at hand as a reference guide.

I will get the religion if not out of the way straight off, but at least nail my colours firmly to mast in this first episode, so I can then continue to concentrate on the actual show itself.

I was baptised into the C of E that is the Church of England for people to the west of the Atlantic, this was formed by King Henry VIII because the Pope (England being a catholic country) objected to Henry topping (executing) his wives. Henry being King wanting his own church to rubber stamp his wishes, scrapped the Catholic Church in England and created the Church of England completely from scratch.

I have since long since moved from this to where I am now a confirmed atheist, and this is my attitude towards religion in a nutshell. The conceit within orthodox religion has it that mankind was created in Gods image, while I firmly contend that is fundamentally the wrong way around, that instead God was created in mans image.

For me all of the religious holy books are merely fables stories for children and the gullible, so there is absolutely no point whatsoever in using any religious bible, as a form of 'Rule Book' let alone to consider that it's any kind of 'History Book'.

Back to this initial episode Satan has decided to 'Retire' from the role that his dad has created for him as the supreme ruler of Hell, and where on earth should he choose to sojourn but in the USA 'City of Angels' Los Angeles.

We have a modern spin of what the Devil is alleged to be about and we instead see it from his perspective, that it's about proffering 'a Deal' to mortals of "What do you really want?" This is posed alongside the orthodox view that Satan is beguiling humans into committing sin, that it's not their fault for doing wrong but his for leading them astray. While he Lucifer has to remind people that the choices were theirs alone to make, and they shouldn't attempt to shift the blame for their own actions, onto deities like God or the Devil.

When we first see the cops we have two officers Chloe Decker and Dan Espinoza, with obviously some form of history between them, arguing the toss over who's crime scene it actually is. With Detective Decker having a point to prove if not exactly an axe to grind, over what is to her a injustice, that she has suffered on a previous criminal investigation.

Both of the detectives appear to be merely seeking to simplify matters for themselves, by reducing them to a form of lowest common denominator, in the desire to lessen their workload and mark it up as yet another "Case solved".

Does it really take the Devil himself to be the only one interested, in even attempting to trace the guilty party in the murder, why because he is interested in punishing them?

The potential fly in the ointment of weddings is where the vicar asks the congregation, if anyone knows of a good reason why the couple can't get married, who would ever imagine that fly could turn out to be Lucifer himself?

Coming from my side of the pond a fun scene is where Lucifer meets up with yank gangster rap culture, and the thoroughly self absorbed detective Chloe Decker, actually decides to arrest him and take him down town, for the heinous crime of stepping on her corns.

On the way mum Decker has to make a school run to see her daughter Trixie, who is delightfully portrayed by Scarlet Estevez, Trixie is not exactly a chip off her mothers block as she is human, and appears to take an instant liking to Lucifer.

Detective Decker's investigations take her to interview the shrink Doctor Linda Martin, who of course can not possibly divulge confidential client information, not ordinarily but she is open to suggestions from Lucifer.

Coming from this side of the pond I have never seen the abiding passion that yanks seem to have for therapy, but in the case of Dr Linda Martin I can finally see the error of my assumptions, for she has certainly won me over to the obvious benefits of it.

Though I sincerely doubt whether I would ever get such an apparently easy in, with the absolutely tasty Doctor Linda, especially as I have no such fascinating existential dilemmas to cogitate over.

For someone starting out so diametrically opposed to Lucifer Chloe Decker seemed to make a complete volte face, saving her life may have had a little to do with it.

Both Decker and Lucifer appear to have wound up with matters of import to ruminate over, though his would seem to have a more of an out of this world feel to them.
