It effectively reveals how PUNJAB has seriously suffered from its own bloody family rivalries too along with all the political conspiracies in the last many decades.
bobbysing2 August 2016
Taking you back in time before the 90s (or rather 80s), SHAREEK once again brings forward an ages old feature of PUNJAB and its conventional style of living, wherein the ownership over land and ego issues were (and still are) widely considered as equivalent to some kind of 'social status' much ahead of any level of education, values, affection, love or even blood-relationships. There were a significant number of Punjabi films made around this particular subject in the past decades and it was supposed to be a 'must-have' sub-plot even in the projects dealing with some contrasting genres.

Putting it differently, this family rivalry and a bloody history of ugly events related with the same can easily be considered as an essential feature of life in (mostly rural) Punjab and that is the reason a major chunk of the Punjabi Songs (even in the present times) revolve around the theme of ego wins, guns, clashes, killings, court cases and similar things.

So honestly where the majority of audience (of Punjab) might enjoy SHAREEK taking it as a highly satisfying extension of their own similar outlook towards various issues, I would like to draw a completely different picture of the film with a noble intention of diverting your heated energies to an extremely positive and socially relevant point of view in the text ahead.

Explaining the meaning of its title first, though in Urdu the word means 'participating, sharing' or 'associating', in the film's Punjabi context the word SHAREEK refers to a competitor, rival or enemy to be exact (that might be even cousins). Focusing well on its specific theme of mutual rivalry, the film has a script that strictly follows its core issue right till the end and keeps hitting the target repeatedly resulting in some strong engaging moments at regular intervals. The excellent performances of the lead actors including the ever- reliable Jimmy Sheirgill, the veteran Guggu Gill, the brilliant learner Mukul Dev (coming from a contrasting world of Hindi films), the spirited Kuljinder Singh Sidhu and the beautiful Mahie Gill superbly add to its overall impact on the viewer without any doubt.

But giving the other four aces of the film their much deserving due it's the combined effort of a realistic direction, well-written dialogues, a fast moving script and the impressive portrayals of Jimmy-Kuljinder and Mukul put together that SHAREEK doesn't turn out to be something unimpressive made on the same old formula with all familiar things. Along with that, what further provides a much stronger support to the film is its appreciable cinematography, splendid background score and the emotionally touching slow musical tracks that start playing in the backdrop just at the right moments having some hard hitting lyrics rendered soulfully.

Having said that SHAREEK has an equal number of shortcomings too that doesn't allow it to be rated as any classic product or masterpiece as many might feel. And its major minuses include, a few deliberately added average songs (as usual), the weak presentation of the younger generation by the inexperienced debutants, less attention given to the changes in the physical appearance of characters despite more than a decade passing in its storyline, the repetitive & easily predictable events in its script progression, the weird-illogical sequence of two 'baraats' of cousins heading for the same girl and a highly stretched climax that unnecessarily adds to the film's painfully long length of over 140 minutes. In other words with a better edited product and more (serious) emphasis given to the performances of the second generation in the storyline, SHAREEK could have been a much finer product having an important message to give to its younger viewers.

Besides, bringing in the Hindi film enthusiast in me watching a Punjabi film, I many times felt as if the narration, the character of 'Jassa' and its overall treatment, more or less was highly inspired from the famous 'Tiger' of Mukul Anand's HUM (1990) majestically enacted by the one and only Amitabh Bachchan. SHAREEK's Jassa surely had the elements of Tiger in it in his various sequences as I strongly felt.

Coming to the most critical part of the review sharing an entirely contrasting study of SHAREEK as a realistic take on the bloody family rivalry between two brothers. Just try to think about each and every character of the film for a moment. Simply consider the persona of every single person participating in its long storyline going into decades and then see if you can find even a single positive character in the entire film right from its first sequence to the last giving some optimistic message.

No you will not, as there is none.

As a matter of fact, SHAREEK is a kind of unique eye-opener film with all NEGATIVE characters in the script giving an all POSITIVE message to the ones who are willing to learn.

So SHAREEK can also be considered as a clear mirror revealing that ugly state of Punjab, wherein family rivalries have eaten up many more lives along with the over famous political conspiracies of the last century. And I can only hope the film forces the present generation to finally think and move over this sick tradition…… instead of relating to the larger than life depiction on the screen……. enjoying it negatively!!!!

Very good film
karmjit7 January 2016
After long time very good punjabi movie came which is shareek. jimmy shergill and the villain has done great piece of acting. very good dialogues and performances. congrats to director. i even liked it morethan angrej i don't know why. may be shareek is better movie than angrej although it couldn't manage the same numbers at box office. it is a must watch for punjabi cinema lovers. nice music and songs too. andgreat moral at the end. that zameen never goes with anyone when they die. the transformation of jimmy shergill character is awesome and villain lines are too good. it is true that Zameen and money is the source of the blackness in the hearts of the people.

Shareek is a film every Punjabi will relate too. Its a powerful, and emotional tale, but not without its blemishes.
jmoneyjohal23 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For many Shareek might be your regular revenge drama, with an old fashioned plot, and clichés galore. But for someone who comes from a Punjabi family, and understands the demographics of a real Jatt Sikh family living in Punjab today, Shareek as a film is a reality. For a Jatt Sikh, his land is everything, he earns from it, and he feeds his family from it. He will do anything to protect his land, and he will fight anybody for his right to his land. This is exactly what Shareek touches upon in its story, also the revenge angle shown between the real brothers, and cousins brother for land is something you can see even today in Punjab, its definitely nothing of the past, its still a very relatable topic for Jatt farmers. So keep that in mind if you watch the film. The film has its blemishes too but more on that later.

Story wise the film is about two brothers Surjit and Jassa fighting for disputed land with there Chacha's sons there cousin brothers Dara, Surjit, and Palli. For Jassa his cousin brothers are his sworn enemies, and there is no end to the enmity, especially after Jassa and Palli fall in love with the same girl, who ends up loving Jassa. In anger Palli, and Dara end up killing there Thaia, there dads older brother at there farm. When Jassa hears about his dads death he ends up killing Palli, and fleeing to England. He returns after 10 years after the death of his brothers son Agam, and how the enmity between Jassa and Dara continues is what the rest of the story is about.

Acting wise Jimmy Shergill, is in absolute fine form, you can feel the pain in his eyes, its one of his best acts. Mahie Gill is good in limited screen time. Guggu Gill plays the older brother role too perfection. Mukal Dev is menacing as the villain, and you can see him bleed vengeance as Dara.

Shareek at times is a little over the top, an example of this is the pre climax wedding scene. And while the dialogues are powerful sometimes just by repeating a word again and again (Shareek) won't make the film better (or resonate more). Some of the characters needed to be toned down to feel more realistic. The story could have been a little less predictable also. The films love story between Jimmy, and Mahi should have been edited a bit too, its too stretched. But all these minuses can be forgiven because it was absolutely fresh seeing a Punjabi film that wasn't a comedy, and Shareek held a old world charm of the Punjabi films I saw growing up which where made in 80s and 90s. The films locations were also very authentic, nothing was glamorized just for the heck of it. The dialogues were fire, and very powerful. Director Navaniat Singh must be applauded because while the story was average (given by Dheeraj Ratan), he rose above the story, and made the film very powerful, with strong characters etc.He made sure every Punjabi could relate to the film. One even feels like crying at many junctures knowing the plight of how one feels for towards his land and family. Bravo. Jaidev Kumar does a great job with the music, and the title song is very soulful.

Overall while Shareek is far from a perfect film, its a film which needs to be encouraged so Punjabi cinema can move forward for the done to death comedies. Shareek is a film every Punjabi will relate too and feel very emotional about, its a great watch. I am going to be nice with my rating and give the film:

3.25/5* or 6.5/10

The Best Punjabi movie ever watched.. Beyond Expectations..
vineetsaini23 October 2015
This is the best punjabi movie I have ever watched till date. The story line is just excellent & keeps you bounded every single minute. The way things & people have been linked and correlated is again amazing. There are many suspense scenes that will leave you with some thinking notes. I personally loved it as it is not like other pollywood movies where you already know the next scene and the climax. The climax is a best surprise but will leave you with deeper thoughts and sorrow. Not to miss the great music & lyrics that just steals your heart. This movie has taken the Punjabi Cinema to new heights. Congratulations to the whole team. Jimmy Sheirgill is a delight to watch.

Just Like Old times!!!!
haman-5088822 October 2015
Finally we see a movie that refreshes memories of an Old Punjabi Cinema. The storyline and cast was wisely chosen and everyone was appropriate for their roles. There were times when we had a laugh and the emotional parts were not lagging too. Although there were few flaws according to me. Mr. Guggu Gill was not used to his stature and ability. Also there were times when I felt background music was not really a necessity in some scenes. Overall, It was a movie that everyone was waiting for and it lived to the expectations. I give it 7/10 with an expectation that they produce more Punjabi movies with a STORY(just like this one) that makes sense.

So Much Potential But falls Short. Saving Grace Jimmy Shergill
jasskTV24 October 2015
This movie is a look into rural Punjab where even brothers turn into enemies over land or water issues.. Me being from a village, i can say the situation is exactly like it's depicted in the movie and in some cases much worse. Anyone from Punjab will definitely connect to the movie.

The movie opens up with wide shots of Punjab and the beauty is mesmerizing. The background song tells us about the pride of Punjabis. We see Jimmy Shergill aged to 50 years and must say the makeup guys did an awesome job .

Jassi played Mahi Gill is introduced to us doing traditional Punjabi dance "Gidda" The choreographers did justice to the dance. Her character had so much potential but they failed to properly utilize it in the movie.

The movie raises some relevant issues. It shows that an arrange marriage in Punjab mostly is based on the number of acres of land on owns. This is so true in reality where the first consideration for any marriage is the size of property owned. ...

Though the movies starts pretty good but is filled with many movie clichés. The actress running into our hero and falling in his arms. Love at first sight for the and many many more.

The movie does have a positive message for youngsters of Punjab. It points out that all guys do is waste time to make beautiful girlfriends so they can show off in front of their friends. They waste lot of time and money behind these beautiful girls. One should check this behavior in oneself. Anyone who has lived in Chandigarh will know how much time guys wastes chasing girls. The movie is also is a wakeup call to girls who fall for these type of opportunist guys too quickly thinking it is love. Later getting betrayed & hurt.

Songs of the movie are all great but unfortunately they don't any anything to the movie except the first one. I think its time that movie makers stop adding songs to the movies for no reason. We should be done with clichéd Holli songs, clichéd love making songs which only acts as fillers.

There is this older women character in the movie. This type of women can be found in many households. She is the one who manipulates men in her house to please her own ego. Like this women, Anyone from a Punjabi family will recognize many of the characters depicted in the movie so a thumbs up to the directors but unfortunately they were not used to their full potential.

Though the 1st half was strong. The movie took a downward turn in the 2nd half. The movie lost its way from being a serious movie that brings up an important issue faced by people in Punjab to almost becoming a comedy... The movie had me confused of what to think.. The tension & pacing generated in the first half went cold in second half as nothing much happened...

The movie missed an opportunity. It could have made us questions many of our actions that happen under the influence of false pride. How does pride make brothers enemies which lasts for generations, how does pride allow us to kill our daughters if the fall in love with someone from different caste, how does pride become more important than our own family that we allow it to be destroyed. How can revenge control everything in oneself and life has no value. The movie failed to ask these important questions.

Some part the story is really good and the movie easily competes with big Bollywood movies and in some places it looks like a small budget Punjabi movie. The action in the movie was awful and its filming is even worse. May be a better choice of action directors could have helped since the just look too fake.

There are 2 kinds of people who should watch this movie. First is people who have at some point lived in a village in Punjab. Second is the people who want to know a bit more about the people living in Punjab villages or Punjabi culture. For anyone looking to me moved by a social issue, this movie is not for you. I'd suggest you watch Ramta Jogi.

The movie is just too long with unnecessary scenes, plot points, sub plots & unnecessary characters. They could have easily made the movie at least 30 mins shorter. For example there is Racial Discrimination scene in the movie. Its just shows the movie was trying to do too much. Some scenes have nothing to do with the progress of story and are added for no reason.

A major surprise in the movie was reviled too early and for me that spoiled all the fun. If they had kept it till the end the viewer would have better enjoyed it. In the end the movie just missed a great opportunity to becoming something truly amazing.

Waste of Time and Money
gujralshikha23 October 2015
Oh my god.! too much characters in the movie. Not even a single character established by the director properly except jimmy. He is the only reason I gave it a 2 star. I can't imagine that the pair of sahib biwi and gangster can deliver such a pathetic movie. Mahhie was a show piece. Mukul was OK. Oshin and Simer were wasted so is the Guggu gill. Double roles were there to save the producers some money. Production house was promoting the movie that there will a great message in the movie. But they simply ruined almost 2 and half hour to deliver the expected message. About Music, Dil Kafira is a nice piece. All others just come and go.

My Advice Don't go for it. Shaandar or PKP2 is a better option.

Waste of a subject
harpalmahal8323 January 2016
I had more expectation from a Jimmy Shergill Movie. An excellent subject wasted, as it seems the movie was made in haste. There was no time spent in romantic relationship built up or built up of animosity between the enemy families. Mukul Dev does justice to his character. Jimmy is just about OK. Lazy writing although the movie picks up around climax but falls flat again. Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gills first meeting scene has all the clichés possible. Gugu gills seems wasted but he leaves a rustic charm in whatever little screen time he gets. It seems the director decided on a subject and made a movie around it. Some scenes seem totally away from logic. It seemed like an attempt to showcase the 90s theme of Punjabi movies in a new package but it almost has as bad writing as old Punjabi gugu gill-yograj era.All in all a disappointment.

Reverse Gear to 1990's
lovelyydevil28 October 2015
If you are a person born in late 1980s then u must have watched bunch of movies like this on Doordarshan in 1990s. Who was telling that this movie will be a trend changer. If comedy movies are coming in a bulk quantity then to bring a change there should be a movie with a new concept. There was no new concept just an old story has been covered with new actors and all that stupidity. Yah! we need a change in Punjabi cinema but please! move forward bring some new things not go backwards. People are moving towards moon, mars etc. but our Punjabi cinema is still struggling with the age old fights of Jatts and the fighting was too looking fake with third class action. Can we have a negative rating please! IMDb AWFUL
