Too Much Overdramatic Scenes But Interesting Treasure Story Behind It All
nolan_dusty31 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Lots of overdramification scenes whether it will is a snake around every corner or every mark on a rock is a hidden message on where the treasure is. I am continuing to watch the show it is a little entertaining just because I'm a huge fan of treasure hunting shows so it does make for a decent mystery. I did have one episode I kind of find it offensive not knowing the full story. The episode where Cappy in Season 2 Episode 6 had just fallen down an went through a PTSD event was a little over the top if it was true I really feel for the guy but my guess it is not a true event an if it was staged I find it pretty offensive to the people who did serve in Vietnam or other wars and have serious PTSD problems. Other than that it is not the greatest show but not the worst if you looking to kill time in between Oak Island or another treasure show this isnt too bad of a way to fill that gap. I like the story behind it but the acting and the over the top drama does get old after a bit so no binge watching for me but hey it meant to be a entertaining show an thats what it's good for if your looking for a documentary keep on searching because this is not it.

Fake but good
dantheamazin9 June 2019
The whole program seems to be complete fiction, but the way theyve done it is actually alright. The overdramatic acting and excitement is actually fun to watch. I don't think I could sit though it again unless it was as a drinking game, everytime they make something up then take a drink 😊

The 3rd season is excellent, but different crew and not on Snake Island
richardelong21 September 2018
Finally a professional team of treasure hunters that are also interested in the history of the Jesuits and native South Americans. These guys have found lots of treasure in the past and have found some interesting stuff since the season 3 start. Very well done.

"You really believe those snakes are poisonous?"
grizzledgeezer5 August 2015
Jacques Cousteau's National Geographic specials were popular forty-plus years ago when I was still in college. One of the guys in the dorm, Russ D, was an avid diver and a major fan. (He later worked for Westinghouse in an engineering position that required diving -- Br'er Rabbit in the briar patch.)

We were looking forward to Cousteau's search for Inca gold, and eagerly gathered around the color TV of a dorm member whose father owned an appliance store.

It turned out that the lake supposedly loaded with jewelry and other artifacts was sorely lacking in gold. But it //was// full o'frogs. For the rest of the hour, we were treated to a show about giant frogs. "Frogs, frogs, frogs, frogs. Glorious frogs, marvelous frogs." (You can learn more by Googling "In the Land of Giant Frogs".)

Russ nearly had a fit. "I don't want to see a show about frogs!"

I can't help but think of that episode when watching "Treasure Quest: Snake Island". Given the way Discovery (and other cable networks) have created despicably dishonest "documentaries", one wonders whether someone had the brilliant idea of a series in which people visit an island infested with (supposedly) poisonous snakes, looking for treasure that never existed.

In fairness, the thing looks legitimate. Mehgan Heaney-Grier is a real free diver (best-remembered for her shows with Manny Puig and Mark Rackley), but I suspect she's present mostly as eye candy in what would otherwise be an all-male program. The other participants don't seem to be acting.

The first three episodes have been nothing if not attention-grabbing. The explorers have quickly located significant clues to the treasure's location. Whether they'll eventually find it...

Assuming this is a legitimate story, I predict they will. Cork, et al, wouldn't let the series be aired otherwise, as it would allow their unfinished work to be exploited by someone else.

My nine-star rating is strictly for entertainment value. Discovery has so badly poisoned the reality-TV well that one has to be suspicious of //everything// it shows.

Disappointing
mark04578 September 2018
I just started watching this show from the beginning. I understand editing to make something more exciting but editing can also make something look real when it is not.

I think this series is at best a re-enactment of what happened and possibly is all made up. The "galleon" anchor is a 19th century one not 16th. We never see any artifacts in place (the Spanish coin cookies). The anthropologist, Meghan, doesn't seem to contribute anything but visual candy. She should have been able to look at the pottery shards they brought up and identify type/era and figure out the age of the wreck. Unglazed earthenware is terribly common and has been used for centuries.

There was no attempt to conserve the silver coins that were in coral matrix. The size of the anchor could be used to calculate the size of the vessel. The fact that there was a flimsy iron chain on the anchor reinforces the fact of its recent age. My guess is that a ship had to cut an anchor loose to either get away from the coast quickly or it had become wedged and couldn't be recovered.

I won't be watching the remaining episodes.

A must see: Snake Island
jadekingla2 August 2015
From the trailer for Treasure Quest: Snake Island to the episodes themselves, you will not be disappointed. The team will bring you up close and personal, first hand adventure on this search for sunken treasure. You will also gain much knowledge each week as it relates to the expedition, both step by step and behind the scenes.

As each team member is an expert in their own field, they bring it together to reach their goal. An exciting and fact gaining experience for all.

There is excitement that will pull you in to see how the next episode will pan out. Tune it to find out.

Too much staging
paulkane98-128 September 2018
I normally enjoy this type of show. Season one was ok but season two is verging on stupidity with the staging of events.

If anyone was to believe half the pish they talk and the scenarios. They need thier heads checked.

lilserenity-0198127 August 2018
The show is cool and on the edge of your seat type show..the only thing that bothers me is meghan wearing a bikini instead of one piece in front of all the guys. im sure they enjoyed it but is it fair to her own family at home, teasing these poor guys..i can understand wearing diving gear but a bikini that was a bit disrespectful to the other guys who are married and away from home..everything else was great.. i loved the leopard and snakes the drama was great..i hope you update it more making it dramatic way before commercial...but i still love the show bring em on...

They lied!!
tiagopbueno31 May 2019
As a brazillian, this is actually the first time i was bothered enough to write a review! First of all, the island is 30km away from the beaches of São Paulo and there are no pirates whatsoever in the área. We keep our crimes inland! The island is run by the navy and although inhabitable, there are plenty of biologists and scientists that work there, with navy's approval! I get u have to tune things up to make good tv, but that was a bit over the top!

Fake
gabyroes24 August 2015
A show which clearly jumps to the most (il)logical conclusion that ANYTHING found on the island MUST be related to hiding treasure (as opposed to the thousand of other more practical reasons), is made for the idiots who believe it. The saddest thing is that budding archaeological aficionados (like my 6 year olds) may believe that this is how science and theory works - fitting every finding to your conclusions.

As far as filming goes, it's godawfully slow, with implied cliffhangers before every commercial and way too much recapping, to hide the lack of content. All the stars are probably interesting in their own rite, but are cheapened by the inauthenticity of the program.

Utterly flawed, if not entertaining for that very reason.

Have a little self-respect Discovery Channel.

Not the worst show on TV, but close to it
nekkidnorman19 February 2018
An absolutely terrible show. The Legend of Croc Gold was another horrid gold show and this is no better. Fake. Made up drama. Scripted parts. Too much recap and very little substance. "Experts" behaving like idiots and assuming that the audience is naive and gullible.

Don't waste your time. There are better gold shows (Gold Rush, Bering Sea Gold, White Water, etc. all are/have become pretty formulaic but they're still miles ahead of this drivel).

Greedy SOBs. There's no archaeology here
airmac4917 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Cavern of Skulls, S3ep12. They took heavy machinery in with no regard to the archaeological value of what they find, just grab the gold and run. They found a piece of fabric with gold interwoven in it, they balled it up in their hand and stuffed it into a baggy. More properly, it should have gingerly been slid onto a piece stiff paper and put into a paper large envelope. No gloves worn. Later they found a skeleton. They took out a blanket and stacked the bones on it, balled it up, then buried it upside. This is the Science Channel. There's no science here. They should be arrested.

Completely fake and here's one reason why..
cgrc-254-5350055 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Look up the Santa Ana Mission on Google earth. You don't need to take a dangerous boat up the Parana river to get there. It's literally less than a mile away from a motorway and large town!! They could have jumped in their cars and driven there from the town in literally 5 minutes. It's truly laughable.

Scripted fake reality at it's finest
janne-kayra14 December 2021
Don't waste your time on this one. It even gets a lot worse after season 1. There's an interesting story behind season 1&2 and another behind season 3 but that's it. There are fake treasure hunting professionals involved as well.
