Arrow - S04E17 Beacon of Hope
j_forbesy31 March 2016
This episode was always going to be interesting in seeing to repercussions of the official split of Felicity from the other member of team Arrow. I think they really hit it early with quite a good reference. I liked how they were saying Felicity wasn't Voldemort and she could be spoken of. I thought it was a really light way to introduce the episode.

I didn't know much about this episode coming into it, so seeing that we were going to have another character return in the previews honestly got me a little disappointed. While I really loved the Bee Bree villain during the Flash, I just feel like the theme of bring back past character is a little overdone at this point across both Flash and Arrow.

Similarly to this week's episode of the Flash, I felt like this was simply a filler episode in terms of the whole season. Although there were a few important moments, I found it quite a dull episode. I didn't really like Bee Bree villain this episode and the bee solider thing was just weird. I really thought that the solider could of been a decent meta-human villain for the early episode of Flash, similarly to Tar-pit.

Mumma Smoak really managed to get on my nerves this episode. While we have always seen her as the not so smart one, she really took it to another level tonight. The back and forth between Felicity and her about Oliver and her relationship just felt like it had no purpose. I found it extremely poor and it just seemed as though the writers were trying to force emotional reactions from Felicity and Oliver.

Again, the flash backs are back to their low points. Before the break we just had, the flash backs had stepped up. But as soon as they had reached their point, they come crashing back down. For me, Slade Wilson's flash backs have been the only one's that have ever been good, and since then, they have struggled to keep up the standard.

I really thought this was a misplaced episode. Getting to the pointy end of the season, every episode should be building to the end, but it isn't. There was only a few things that really hinted to a progressing. Damien Darhk working his magic through the prison was one of them. It was kind of cool to see Darhk do this. I feel like his prison story line is going to play out similarly to the way Fisk did in the second season of Daredevil. Curtis finally becoming a member of team Arrow. This was really a matter of time before we saw Mr Fantastic. It was pretty cool seeing him in action doing some flips in his effort to run away from the robot bee. Finally we have the big reveal of Evil Andy Diggel in the final moments. For me this is probably the biggest redeeming moment of this episode. Without this moment this episode was extremely pointless, however, as Arrow often does, this end reveal with Malcolm and Andy manages to get excited to see how the next episode will play out.

Apart from a few good story progression, this could have easily been the story line from an early episode in the season, which even then, at times it seemed extremely poorly written. To me, this was always going to be a down episode for me.

Die Hard With Bees

Just as Cupid was a filler villain to ultimately end the Olicity relationship for good, Bug Eyed Bandit was the villain that led to Curtis' involvement in Team Arrow. Is she a great villain? No. Were some of her lines cringe worthy? Yes. Does she fit more into a show like Flash? Absolutely. But I honestly enjoyed the shift in tone this week. Every once in a while this show deserves to take a breather, and so does the audience. Aside from an awful twist at the end of the episode, this a fun entry for the latter half of the season.

Emily Kinney returned as Brie Larvan aka the Bug Eyed Bandit who is out to demand the same miracle drug treatment that Felicity got a few weeks back. Kinney does the best she can with some overly cheesy and awkward dialogue, but she served her purpose well tonight. The character of Bug Eyed Bandit has grown on me much to the same way that Emily Kinney's character in Walking Dead did. She had several on-the-nose puns that made me laugh out loud, but I'm just not sure it was supposed to be intentionally funny. Those bee puns were a common thread throughout the episode with several of the cast chiming in.

All of the bee craziness didn't have anything to do with HIVE, who is apparently still full throttle Genesis without Damien Darhk. The latter seems to be on his way out of prison after a short trip and we now have a new center of HIVE to take down….Andy Diggle? Really? That's the reveal you're going to pull on us Arrow writers? I sure hope it's just a 'cool' ending the writers wanted to try and shock us with and not an actual hint as to the state of HIVE itself. I have to believe they have something better in store for us with Darhk and/or Malcom for the end of the season. Don't get sloppy like you did with last seasons back half.

The flashbacks did little to further the story line other than showing us Reiter's true abilities. It honestly seems like the flashbacks have taken place over a matter of a few weeks for this entire season. Seriously, how long have they been in this cave area? No matter, I hope they can pick up the pace and give us a sense as to the horrific state Oliver will be in next season, with no one left on the island.

Curtis had a huge episode this week as he found himself in the Arrow bunker. Why is it so easy to get down there? And how many people know about Oliver's identity now? The only logical reason why it would be that easy to get down there is if someone made it that easy. Perhaps Malcom had something to do with that? Either way, Curtis is a welcomed addition to the always fluctuating Team Arrow. With Felicity off doing new and important things for Palmer Tech, Curtis seems like the perfect fit for the team. Whether or not that's the case, he added such a nice light hearted dynamic to the team. Echo Kellum is awesome.

Beacon of Hope was the not-so-subtle title of the episode with it being used as the heart of the advice coming from Thea and Laurel tonight. While using it more than once seemed a bit much, I liked the fact that Laurel was used as the advice giver this time as Oliver struggled post-breakup. I still don't think I'm on bored with a romantic relationship between them in the future, but I have to give credit to the writers for significantly improving the Laurel character. She was horribly written for a long time, so I'm glad to see Katie Cassidy get a chance to shine again. Plus, that Canary Cry was actually pretty cool this time.

I'm not sure what's in store next episode with the team likely losing a member, but this episode at least proved to me that the writers are starting to figure out what to do with certain characters, minus that stupid Andy Diggle reveal. Overall, it was a fun and light hearted episode which gave us the great potential addition of Curtis to the team, and some more closure with Felicity and Oliver.

+Tone shift

+Curtis is *terrific*

+Laurel & Oliver material

+Felicity finds her worth at Palmer Tech

-Some cheesy lines/puns

-End reveal

In this recent episode of Arrow we get the return of a villain (Bug-eyed bandit)Ray and Felicity faced on the Flash, and Curtis stumbles onto the Arrow cave.

Warning: Spoilers
I love Arrow a lot, but recently season 4 hasn't been showing me the things I love about the show. This episode had its moments but the rest was a waste. Felicity had more screen time than Oliver and the team. Felicity was the one who took out the bee solider and Oliver got shot in the chest. I know it sounds weird but if you watch season 1-3, Oliver wouldn't let himself get hit by those bullets. I did like how Curtis filled in Felicitys spot on the team. I enjoyed him this episode and it's fun how they touched upon laurel and Oliver's relationship. I miss the intense action scenes and I miss the brutality of the episodes the show had. Now there is more drama than action, and when we have a fight scene, it's short and sloppy. Olicity was better when it was a desire not a reality. I think we need more Green Arrow than felicity. I miss the arrow we love.

Funny!

This is the funniest episode yet. I know this is supposed to be a dark superhero show but every now and then a show needs to have some comedic value. To let us laugh at a show that's completely ridiculous as any sci-fi / comic book show can be.

Aside from the double entendres the show is normally rife with, this was straight out gags and physical humour. When Curtis made that sideways 360 degree jump over the desk I was blown away.

So regardless of what the comic book fanz have to say about the accuracy of the show, I think they gave us a nice light hearted night off and still included the frantic heroism.

Most shows do this once a season. X-Files did it well, Supernatural has a few hilarious episodes even making fun of their own show once.

So, I really enjoyed this episode to the point of true belly laughing frequently. Thank you to the folks who make Arrow for giving us a nice little joy ride to occasion the addition of Curtis to the team and lessening the friction of Felicity leaving the team.

Cool

Very good episode. The relationship that Felicity and Thea started to build in this episode was pretty cool, especially this 3-way team up with Donna. The fact that Curtis Holt was suo=per important in this episode was cool,it brought a breath of fresh air to this episode. On Brian's side she was pretty cool as in Arrow and his enhancement with the physical projection of the bee man was pretty believable, those reasons were more interesting than in The Flash. Quite a fleeting but nice episode.

Indeed A Beacon of Hope
madcatmjb31 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
On the heels of last weeks' episode, I was watching this episode with an ultimatum in mind. Things that had been frustrating me for the season since the start went wrong in all the worst possible ways, and I was just about done with arrow. The trailer did not seem promising, but I'm glad to say that it lives up to its name.

First, the good.

The opening scene just jumps right in there with a cool sparring scene, showing a glimpse of the well trained Oliver we knew. Between the banter and the introduction of Curtis, the light hearted feel has really done favours for the episode, and I found myself smiling for once as I watched Arrow. I prefer the dark and gritty, but it's also great to have fun with an episode, and I immediately felt optimistic about the rest of the episode.

Trick arrows once again make their appearance! It's almost as if the writers knew the grievances that people had with the previous episode. Oliver is very human and answers our thoughts that wonder why he isn't so badass when it comes to relationships. Felicity did not irk me as she did, feeling more like her old character. Was great to see why I liked that character in the first place.

The fact that I have so many things to talk about and point out in the episode just means I'm looking forward to the rest.

The bad is that once again Oliver got KOed in the episode. Understandeably he got stung and isn't at top form, but I'd love to see more of his skill again at a point.

The Flashback was ignorable in the last episode, but here it is downright lazy. They need to bring more context or at least some goal to it.

But if I go any further I'll just be nit picking at personal preferences. Honestly, I enjoyed this episode. It was a fun watch, and I'm looking forward to the next.

It was a fun episode of Arrow

Warning: Spoilers
Oh my god, that was a fun episode of Arrow!

To start off, we get a number of villains in various levels of power in this episode. Damien gets a side plot that brings back a previously seen villain and reveals another one hidden in plain sight by episode's end.

However, the main villain in this episode is one that previously appeared on The Flash mini-crossover special, "All Star Team Up".

The Bug-Eyed Bandit, as played by Emily Kinney. Her Flash season 1 appearances were definitely very entertaining and was a big surprise to see her crossover to Arrow!

Not sure which was worse, the villain or Felicity's mother. The show continues to decline rapidly.

The next episode better BEE good
valpaskankaristo24 April 2016
In this lukewarm episode the viewers are offered a few watchable action scenes by Team Arrow who are fighting against... *checks the name from Google* ...Brie Larvan who appeared in The Flash last year and is ultimately forgettable as a villain. We get quite a few scenes with Felicity and the character of Curtis (also known as Mr. Terrific in the comics) gets some story. I don't know what it is with this episode, it just didn't feel anything like it would have... But then again, Flash has the same problem with their recent episodes, maybe it's meant to be that the five-ish episodes before the finale are meh. I would end my review with mentioning a few good parts but I honestly can't remember a lot of anything from the ep.
