With Love From Pakistan
mahanaqvirule23 November 2015
I'm a big movie goer but not so active on reviewing them. but this Punjabi flick blown me away... I'll must say this is one of the best Punjabi movies I've ever seen. It won't be wrong if I mention that everything in the movie is so well placed, Script, Dialogues, Background-score, Songs everything is just perfect. Punjab's Culture have always been so rich and this movie just projected it in its true sense and nature. Comedy, Sweet innocent romance, Lovely songs inclusive of traditional Punjabi folk music, in short, a well packaged content almost for all ages. and in last, Actors! I must say, from now, I'm a big fan. A MUST WATCH!

It's a present for Punjabis..
sufianrana-0891919 November 2015
Technically speaking, "Angrej" as a movie is one fine piece of art with a sound story and classic acting. Dialogues are sensibly drawn and screenplay is just dandyish.

however, the most astounding aspect of this film is that it is a very well researched movie on the vintage Punjabi culture which I must say has gone obsolete nowadays. For that, I would like to thank and congratulate the whole team of "Angrej", particularly, the writer and the director who I believe have contributed a great deal to the preservation of the Punjabi culture.

This movie is a gift for those who grew up listening to the legends of "Des" full of "Lok Geet" and the one who delves into Punjabi literature.

The immensely lovable performances, ethnic feel, well written dialogues and a fabulous soundtrack makes this familiar love story a worth watching film for sure.
bobbysing2 August 2016
There are three basic ways to make a major impact on the Indian viewers always looking for some good entertaining cinema every Friday with the same excitement and passion.

One - Give them something entirely fresh with an unusual plot line never heard or seen before presented innovatively (which is extremely difficult).

Two – Transport them to a highly relatable, mesmerizing world with all lovable characters winning hearts right away through their individual mannerisms, looks and dialogues (despite having a predictable storyline).

Three –Come up with a hypnotic musical soundtrack with 6-7 spellbinding songs coming one after another at every 10-12 minutes creating some kind of 'romantic chemical locha' in their bodies reminding them of their own beloveds.

Thankfully after a painfully long wait moving ahead than the subjects of Comedy, Religion and 84, Punjabi cinema finds its lost musical soul back with ANGREJ, scoring the maximum on the second and third point mentioned above.

In short, despite having a routine, predictable storyline and budget constraints visible in the period film taking you back in the 40s before Indian independence, ANGREJ effortlessly wins your heart with its innocence, simplicity and honesty just like the people of those times living life through their 'hearts' and not 'minds' in comparison to the present era.

The film brings smiles on your faces within the first five minutes only and then that smile stays right till the end with all delightful characters getting introduced at regular intervals. In fact the most adorable one comes post intermission only making a sweeping impact right away with her charming presence and a charismatic smile. She is Sargun Mehta, the girl known for her TV appearances making her debut in Punjabi cinema with a bang. To give her the deserving credit, ANGREJ makes an instant connect with the young hearts due to her highly appealing performance and I can bet, 8 out of 10 boys would be feeling a crush for her coming out of the theatre (may be all the 10).

Getting valuable contribution from everyone in the cast including the talented singer–actor Amrinder Gill (as the innocent young boy caught in a love dilemma), Binnu Dhillon (as the funny but concerning friend in an unexpectedly short role), Anita Devgan (the cute mother) and the couple Sardar Sohi-Nirmal Rishi (providing the good old humour of the 80s), ANGREJ comes as a big pleasant relief for the audience who were being served the same usual content again and again by the Punjabi filmmakers irresponsibly.

However apart from Sargun Mehta and Amrinder Gill as the lead pair, the film gets a huge support from another debutant Aditi Sharma (playing the complex character of a confused girl) and Ammy Virk who simply bowls you over with his impressive screen presence and highly likable performance despite playing a negative character.

Having praised everyone in the cast above, the actual backbone of ANGREJ remains its heartwarming, nostalgic execution and fabulous writing with exceptional dialogues from the team of Simerjit Singh (director) and Amberdeep (story/screenplay/dialogues) reminding you of those pleasant times of the last century. The ethnic feel, the lost lingo, the heartfelt teasing and the cheerful interaction with everyone around by the young ones fills you with a different kind of positive energy not seen in the recent Punjabi films to be precise. It keeps progressing with all uplifting sequences without any drag hindering the overall pace. And there always exists a controlled comic feel throughout the movie that keeps the smiles coming along with the timely laughter.

Above all a peppy, melodious as well as meaningful soundtrack gives ANGREJ (Punjabi) a superior edge that was missing in a Punjabi film since many years. In other words, a soundtrack with each and every song bringing forward many traditional elements of Punjab's culture was not found in any of the recent hits or super hits to give you the exact picture. And when you have all exceptionally melodious tracks with highly lovable performers enacting them so wonderfully, then that itself becomes a reason enough to visit it in the theaters as soon as possible.

Talking about the people more interested in business point of view, ANGREJ should teach the makers, directors, composers and producers of Punjab that what a melodious score actually is and what a well- made incomparable soundtrack can do to a film in terms of its opening figures at the box office. And for this big musical achievement, the entire team led by Jatinder Shah and Amrinder Gill needs a special appreciable mention. Especially Amrinder, who always displayed a keen understanding of the melody, right from his early days of "Chann Da Tukda".

Coming to the downers, the biggest one remains a routine, seen before love-triangle plot that becomes entirely predictable post interval and offers nothing new in terms of story content. Plus I strongly felt the traditional ladies singing in the second half going into a bit longer length than required.

Other than that ANGREJ deservingly calls for a higher rating for the merits mentioned above. But here I personally would like to congratulate the person who did the casting of the two brilliant girls playing the key roles, especially Sargun Mehta.

So for all Punjabi film viewers and friends interested in taking a sweet, feel good cultural ride back in time to the mid 40s, buy a bunch of tickets for the entire family and visit your nearest cinemas at the earliest to celebrate love and music together in a pure cinematic form like never before with ANGREJ and have a great time.

Delight to Watch ..... Don't miss this
kuldeep-sidhu19 August 2015
After watching the initial trailer, I was looking forward to this movie. Was little bit fearful that the team might add typical masala or overdo things to spoil the fun but on the contrary no such thing happened and it turned out to be more than what I had expected.

Movie is set in an era before independence and captures the life of normal peoples as it used to be. you could straight away relate to those little nuances and etiquette's of the cast and fall in love with them. It beautifully captures the locale of that time with simple life, the way people talk and dress up. Cinematography was awesome.

Story was simple and did not had any unusual turns but still it keeps you engaged due to the way it is narrated. There are funny moments which doesn't seem forced but arise due to the general talks or behavior of characters. Songs are not forced, but seems like part of story and helps it move forward.

Acting wise everyone did there job sincerely, no over the top acts. Although everyone was good but Ammy Virk and Sargun Mehta stands out with there performance.

I have rated it 10, couldn't have wished more then what it delivered. Go and watch this delightful journey into the life of early 30's and 40's from the past century. This one is not to be missed.

One of the best Punjabi movie.
kahlon-thehearthacker0710 August 2015
Finally somebody broke the monotony of comedy movies in Punjabi cinema and made something really good. Story and screenplay is outstanding, it's kind of those movie which leave it's impression. Amrinder Gill & Sargun did a great job, most interesting part is watching Ammy Virk making his debut in Punjabi cinema which very good acting. Trust me, everybody should watch it. I'm sure it will be a good package what everyone expects from a movie. Generally only big budget movies have such combination of entertainment. But, Angrej broke that thing and showed us even Punjabi cinema can make movies like this. Good job everyone. Keep it up. Looking forward to see more movies like this in our Punjabi cinema. Thank you.

Best Punjabi movie EVER on true Punjabi culture!
harmeet-8577520 December 2015
This is my first ever review on IMDb....I was literally forced into registering into an IMDb account as I HAD to write a short recommendation for this movie.

In short this movie is SIMPLY OUTSTANDING and probably ONE OF THE BEST (if not the best) Punjabi movie showing true Punjabi culture!

MUST WATCH with kids esp if you are a Punjabi, to let them know of the background that we come from. Hats off to the producers and the directors for bringing out this masterpiece. Acting is brilliant and songs are awesome. I normally skip songs in most of my movies as I find them useless and meaningless most of the time...But for this movie, I watched the movie at least 4 times just to enjoy the music and songs!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

Story 10 out of 10 ,

Acting 11 out of 10 ,

Music 9 out of 10

I am writing this review but literally i have no words to explain the beauty and depth of this picture. Only people from Punjab(both India and Pakistan) or who knows PUNJABI can understand the importance and beauty of this picture. Each and every detail is being taken care of.

I belong to a Punjabi family and i want to share that my family has watched this movie for more than 20 times. The presentation of culture is very very realistic and seems like daily life. This movie is the best Punjabi movie I've ever seen. Such a unique movie!

Hats off to every single person who worked on this project.

We need a sequel or at least a movie like this. Please !

After a long time have experienced a great entertainment. best topic, best story, best cast, each and every song is best with melodious music. i am also a Punjabi from Pakistan, we love to watch good movies from Punjabi culture and language, you have chosen a great topic from old memories which makes us felt like we are in ancient period of Punjab. basically i am a very picky type person but i can't find any mistake in music or in story of this movie. Do make movies like this one, try different topics other than comedy etc. anyhow this movie deserves 10 star rating.

Congratulations Amrinder Gill and Team.

Really one of the best Punjabi movies describing real essence of Punjabi culture
mjameelanwar12 February 2016
I am from Punjab Pakistan and have close observation of Punjabi culture. I heard about this movie from a friend and he insisted me to watch this movie. I didn't believe that such a masterpiece can be presented in a very light and original way.

I started watching this movie and it grabbed my whole attention and didn't let me divert my attention for single minute till the end of this movie. Our Sikh brothers have presented a very true culture of Punjab and it has not only revealed but also revived our Punjabi culture. I thank to the characters and director of this movie for providing such a master piece.

Lot of Love from Pakistani guys who are looking forward to see more such great movies like this. Wish you all the best!!

The movie is so good that you would want to live in it, its set in old panjab (and not Punjab)
kerrypunjabi27 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
So I bumped into this movie today and it was a long time since I have watched a good punjabi movie. There are so many different aspects of this movie, whether it's the folk songs sung in marriages, or the treatment of notorious fuferji, the pure love (believe me no touching is involved) is so beautiful, the flirt in the form of Ammy Virk or a helpful friend played by the great comedian Binu Dhillon. The movie is set in punjab in the era of 40s, homes made of clay and when if you have passed primary school than you are the most literate person in the village. The strength of the movie is story and script (Amberdeep Singh is the MAN behind the project), backed up by awesome direction (Simerjit Singh) and natural acting by all the characters. The music of the movie is brilliant. So if you understand Punjabi, then don't waste a second.. Go and watch the movie, you can thank me later.

This is my first review, and probably last..This movie deserves everything.

A Must See!!
sonnysandhu18 January 2016
Absolutely loved the movie! This is a must see for every Punjabi. I honestly did not expect to this much out of this movie. Its a relief from all the crappy comedy movies being produced lately. The movie has everything comedy, drama, it does an excellent job promoting our language, our culture, the virsa of punjab. All of the character did an excellent job, my favorite character was Aslam, played by Binnu Dhillion. Ammy Virk also did a great job playing the role of Hakkam, loved his lahori punjabi. The music of the movie was also fantastic, all of the songs were great, loved old style boliyan. This movie is an absolute treasure! I recommend everything to watch this movie with your family.

Wonderful Movie !! Best to watch this with entire family ..
jitenderrawat11 March 2016
The best thing I feel about this movie is that it is a period movie and director has done full justice with it by showing each and every single thing in a period view like it was back in 50's. e.g utensils used in the movies, transportation resources like horse and cycles, lanterns, bull-carts, oil lamps, houses, etc.

Wonderful Movie with Excellent Story line, Superb Performances, Joyful songs and at last but not least great Direction. We need more movies of this kind with neat and clean comedy, which you can watch and enjoy with your family. Each and every actor/actress in this movie has given his/her beat performance till now. I salute to the director of this movie "Simerjit Singh" for best possible execution of the story line and utilizing each actor so gracefully.

I am expecting more movies of this kind in future.

Thank you for keeping the Punjabi cinema alive!
Ahsanaziz13 July 2016
This is the most simple and beautiful Punjabi movie I have ever watched. The set was so natural and dialogues were sweet. I don't have words to describe it. I actually paused the movie many times to see the details in the raw beauty of villages, re-winded to listen the dialogues again, and so lost in that I couldn't follow the story properly.

It shows the 1940s rural Punjab which was not very different from today's Punjab, except it was more beautiful. The depiction of village life and their simple problems was very accurate. Every character of the movie had a beautiful Punjabi accent and a sweet story to tell, I can listen to every one of them for days. Absolutely loved everything.

Thank you very much for making this.

Love from a Pakistani!

Probably the best family movie in recent times
iarslanashraf26 October 2016
Had this movie been in some other high profile industry like Hollywood, it would have surely won an Oscar. If you're a Punjabi or can comprehend the Punjabi language and you're looking not to waste your time by watching any ABC movie then this one is for you. Probably the best family movie of the Punjabi film industry.

The film has rightly depicted the rural Punjab of the pre-independence era. Amrindar Gill was just perfect for the main character of "Angrej" whereas Binnu Dhillon also added a great deal of comedy as "Aslam". In short, if I had to describe the film in just 3 words, i would have said "A MUST WATCH".

A masterpiece with the charm of pre-independence era romance.
bishmeetsinghkohli6 June 2016
Forced myself in registering on the IMDb to write a review. I have already watched this movie thrice and planning to watch few more times. Loved the movie, it's a masterpiece. I love watching punjabi movies, this is by far the best movie I have ever watched. Heard about the sequel coming soon, can't wait for that. The way movie portrays pre-independence punjab is amazing. Movie gives a lot of knowledge about punjabi culture back in the days. My late grand parents migrated from lahore to Delhi after independence, I wish they were alive and I would have watched this movie with them, they would have loved this movie. The movie shows how sikhs and muslims lived in peace and harmony back in days and punjab was so peaceful and happy. I wish to see the same peace and harmony between India and Pakistan.

A authentic punjabi film, its a landmark in the punjabi film industry. The days of yore where beautiful
jmoneyjohal7 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I can literally count the number of actual good well made punjabi movies i have seen on one hand, to be frank there are not that many. But with Angrej i can add a new film to list of not only good punjabi films, but this films is a great one. All the hype, and hulla i heard about the film was very true.

In punjabi there is a saying that "mitti di kushbhoo ageya" Angrej is such a film, where the one gets that feeling, its a very rooted film. Its based in 1942 punjab before the partition, but the film doesn't have anything to do with the British or slavery at all. The film is rather a fresh take of that time, a hilarious one, and i can guarantee, that one will be left in splits when watching this film. The rustic villages, the clothes, the old sayings, the way people used to talk, the customs, are all on point, everything looks, and feels like the time of yore. One could call this film a landmark film in punjabi cinema.

The films story is a simple tale of a boy named Angrej who fell in love in Punjab before partition, when love was forbidden. Angrej soon finds out the girl he loves Madoo, likes someone else. He then after sometime time in sadness encounters Madoo at his sisters wedding, and with the help of another girl tries to win back his love Madoo. Does Madoo fall back in love him or does he move on is what form the rest of story. To know more rush to the theatres.

With a film like Angrej even though the story sounds very simple and clichéd, it doesn't matter because the films screenplay is so engaging and strong. And even though the story sounds clichéd its not because whatever, predictable solutions one thinks will resolve a problem in a regular film are not that same here, this is because having a story set in 1942 means solutions where not the same back then, the director has made sure the film keeps that 1942 aura while solving or creating a conflict in the film, and this where the films gets it unique novelty.

Acting wise Arminder Gill proves his mettle his good. Binnu Dhillion,Sardar Sohi, and Sargun Mehta also impress

Overall i was pleasantly surprised with Angrej, the film was throughly enjoyable, it was a laugh riot, and also got me thinking maybe the old days were better. Life was more simple back then, people were more nicer, and there was this amazing culture we are sorely missing today. It was nice to see the time my grandparents and even parents grew up in. A landmark film in the punjabi film industry!

Good Movie, Must watch...
MiniWrites19 January 2016
Angrej 2015 is the movie that everyone should watch. Although there are some things that are shown in the movie unnecessarily to describe the outward culture of villages but if we see the overall movie then we find it really very amazing.

In fact, these days the movies like this are really very hard to find. If you like to see the movie just because of story or just because of acting or casting then this is a perfect movie for you.

I was not a big fan of Amrinder Gill before but when i saw this movie then i really appreciate his work as an actor and as singer as well. I really appreciate the amazing songs of this movie and most of the great songs of this movie are in the voice of Amrinder Gill.
