A Mess of the Highest Order
Indyrod11 August 2018
I don't know why my local library stocked this, according to IMDB, hardly anybody has seen it, and I can see why. I don't how to review this total mess of a movie, so I'll just give you a few things that happen, and it is a found footage movie. First of all, the stars Eric Roberts has less than two minutes in the movie, and Tom Sizemore, has less than 3 minutes at the most. Some invading giant parasite has appeared in the Atlantic Ocean, and sends out these little parasites, that either causes peoples head to explode, or the people become zombies. The whole movie is told to us, from a lady that has viewed the tapes, and some kind of book that explains it all, but we, the audience gets no clue what it says. that's enough, the movie makes zero sense, the acting is horrible, and I have no idea where the writers ever got the idea to make this piece of crap. I would really like to know, if anybody else was silly enough to watch this. As I said, it didn't cost me anything, but anybody that borrows it from the library, is going to ask WTF. anyway, 1/5 and that one is for some of the practical effects that were not that bad. Stay way way clear of this trash....

surfisfun14 September 2018
Stiff acting. Bad edit, shots, all. bad direction.. B movie that is not campy . bore fest. sorry to be so negative about it. worth 3 for effort.

the director must have some connections to have this made, maybe its a sort of demo? but it dosnt show good directing influences or inspiration.

Extraordinarily bad.
sidneygchambers23 December 2018
Never ceases to amaze me that so much effort and money can be poured into a film for so little. I find it surprising also that Julia Roberts brother and Tom Sizemore are in this. Just goes to show they have no idea until the end of filming what the result will be, maybe they don't care. Best part of this film is the out takes at the end.

I've been examining this film...
bradley-g-lang17 November 2019
Well, if you can call it a film. It completely lacks a coherent narrative. It makes no sense. It's just disjointed writing and crude images.

Paraphrasing a line from the film of course, but it fits.

Example: My colleagues - what few are left - are gone.

Also, very hard to hear/understand some of the main actress' dialogue. I think her English actually improved during the course of the film, but I wish I had subtitles available.

Got to give some credit for Lovecraftian horror theme though.

Can you see the light?

Warning: Spoilers
A parasite creating zombie-like creatures is infecting the Atlantic coast. Dr. Moreira (Nana Gouvea) is part of an investigation team in this mostly found footage film.

Eric Roberts, Tom Sizemore, and Vincent Pastore are overbilled for their roles. Dr. Moreira does monologues for about half the film in a bad accent where "V" is pronounced like a "W" and a "W" is pronounced like a "V". It made the film difficult to sit through watching facial close-ups talking into the camera. How did they audition women for the part? "Give us your worst accent?" The creature appears at the end of the film.

Guide. F-word. Brief sex. Nudity (Ashley Couture, Sarah Faire, Nina Martinez)

Better not wake (up)
kosmasp30 November 2022
No pun intended - sometimes I see ratings for movies and I think: it can't be that bad now can it? And then there are movies like this one, which remind me ... well I reckon it kind of can. No offense to anyone involved, I know making movies is not easy, even harder if you do not have any money/budget to speak of.

Tom Sizemore - if you have seen the movie Heat or some other stuff he did a long time ago ... you may remember really liking him! I mean I still do ... and he needs money, if no one else is hiring him ... he has to do stuff like this. A movie that makes almost no sense and is way too late for the found footage hype .... and if you are not a fan from the start anyway ... the movie will not win you over ... quite the opposite will be happening.

When a trailer is THAT BAD !!!
boydwalters13 September 2018
I watched the trailer and that screamed unwatchable bilge ... How bad do films have to get before you don't call them films anymore, just pointless images on a screen that are on in the background as the dregs of society talk about their day in work and change the babies nappies ??? ... Well quite frankly the trailer was too much of a waste of life to even consider watching the film ... It is actually one of those times you actually look up the director and make sure you don't even bother watching a trailer if it involves the people who made this dross ... Hey look, I made a film ... No dear, you made a waste of equipment and wasted peoples time

So bad it becomes a comedy.
sethrogaine23 November 2019
All I can think is "Oh Hai, Mark!" What starts out as a horribly, terribly acted movie soon turns into an embarassing mess of writing, acting, directing and unintentional butchering of the english language.

But stick with it and you'll see some of the worst cinema you'll see in ages. It's worth it for the laughs! The main, terrible, actress (Nana) talks into a (web?) camera throughout the movie as a narrator of sorts. The camera is mounted above her forehead and she has to look up at it with her twisted smile, terrible acting, awful pronunciation and a psycho look in her eyes. It all seems intentionally comical, but -- its not. It's super serious and it's super super bad.

The writing - oh wow - there are so many terrible quotes of cringe and nonsense, you'll feel like you're drunk trying to follow the dialogue. Just listen to it.. and it's really (unintentionally) funny-bad. Unlike tongue-in-cheek movies like the Sharknado series, this movie thinks its a seriously good flick, and it's hilarious to watch it try to pretend that it's an actual movie.

It tries to be a found footage film in a lot of the scenes, but it often raises the question : "Who is filming this? Where did the camera to film that come from??" Its so poorly thought out, its awesome-bad.

No it's not Tommy Wiseau bad, but it's pretty damn close. The main actress is worth it just to see how bad she is trying to be good.

It's still worth a 1/10 - but if you watch it just to enjoy its worst-in-class acting and its worst-in-class dialogue, you certainly will get some laughs and some groans. Just don't think it's serious.. and you might want to stream it so you can move the slider to give yourself a bit of break from having to watch the whole thing.

Nana is married to Carlos Keyes, who wrote this movie for her. Period. But, she's beautiful!

Not a Movie
arfdawg-121 January 2019
Ignore any even marginally good reviews you see for this garbage. It's not even a real movie. It's an amalgam of bad writing, bad directing and even worse acting.

Check Zito who is like 70 with ridiculously jet black hair mumbles thru his lines. How is HE getting work? Then there is this woman who can't even speak English constantly narrating. What the heck is that about? It's like she's speaking phonetically. Couldn't get an American?

Chuck Zito and Tom Sizemore have been in a few movies together of late and one hsa to wonder if these are funded by some kind of not so legal means. These are clearly not union films. There is no way they got permits to film under the boardwalk in NYC.

And Sizemore is back on the juice. Plus he delivers his lines like he just saw them in the script and doesnt know what the hell is going on.

Oh and then there's Eric Roberts who is also in a ton of movies like tis over the past few years. They suck. These films are garbage.

The director, according to IMDB is making a zillion films in one year. How is that possible? Well that's because these are not real movies. They are street junk that someone picked up and packaged.

Pass.

you've never seen a movie quite like it, even if you've seen hundreds of movies that are sort of like it.
artistandevents13 August 2018
Lack Wake proves that something genuinely weird and offbeat can be constructed out of what are otherwise fairly standard parts; you've never seen a movie quite like it, even if you've seen hundreds of movies that are sort of like it.

Shot as found footage (but no shaky camera) in a pseudo-documentary style story rather than having a plot unfold around a defined set of characters. The story twists and turns, evolving continuously. When you think you've discovered the main character and then they're eaten, beaten or exploded. The film is bold, brazen and makes every effort to push the envelope when it comes to non-traditional and non-linear story telling.

The plot is more of a downward spiral than a typical story with multiple characters taking center stage.

The umbrella term to describe this low-budget feature would be "found-footage horror," but beyond that, it's also a paranoid apocalyptic thriller, a zombie movie, a Lovecraftian "weird tale," a Roger Corman-esque exploitation flick, a Michael Crichton medical mystery - the list goes on and on, as if director took every disparate type of sci-fi/horror movie they ever thought was cool, threw them all in a Cuisinart, and hit "puree".

Worst movie ever.
stevenmt19 January 2020
The lead actress was just awful. Her lack of the English language was dominate and her lack of acting ability was very visual. The director should at least try to go to film school. The editing was horrible and ridiculous. This movie was like some little kids got together and said "hey I got a camera, let's make a movie". I take that back, kids would have done a better job.

Indie mish-mash
Leofwine_draca9 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
BLACK WAKE is a mish-mash of horror and sci-fi themes, carried out on a disappointing indie budget which really isn't up to much. Part of the film is found footage of some kind of coastal zombie epidemic; then there's a woman talking to the camera for long stretches, only included to pad out the story and provide exposition. Eric Roberts and Tom Sizemore appear in brief cameos, and then right at the end Cthulhu himself has a cameo. I love the subject matter, but this is a poor film indie, one which doesn't hold together whichever way you look at it.

How hard up was Tom Sizemore and Eric Roberts for Money
wdarrylc28 January 2024
How hard up was Tom Sizemore and Eric Roberts for Money? Neither of them even bothered to try and act in this stinker, can't say I blame them. This move is a waste of time. I set through it to see how much worst it could get. In that I was not disappointed it did get worst. It has nothing redeeming the acting is terrible and so is everything else, writing, directing etc. It is super tough to try and write a review on such a stinger when you need to have six hundred characters. So sorry for the fluff her at the end. However. I reiterate that this is a stinker so pass unless you are really wanting to see a movie that should be rated a negative 10.

First Movie by Jeremiah Kipp
kayjgardiner28 August 2018
For the first official movie for his release, it was excellent. For what he had, he made it work better than I think most directors would. I loved that so much.

By no means a good film, but a deliciously cruddy bad one
Woodyanders3 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Boy, does this absolute train wreck of a horror monster flick make for perversely enjoyable viewing on the basis of its sheer jaw-dropping awfulness alone. For starters, lead actress Nana Gouvea makes for a laughably unconvincing scientist, with her heavy accent in particular rendering a lot of her dialogue almost unintelligible. (Fortunately, the makers of this bilge had the good sense to include a few scenes of Gouvea showing off her fine voluptuous figure in a black bikini.) Slumming faded names Eric Roberts as the skeptical Dr. Frank, Tom Sizemore as the irate Detective Michaels, Vincent Pastore as the ill-fated Dr. Jones, and Chuck Zito as the gruff Sheriff Williams are all clearly in this one strictly for the paycheck.

Director/co-writer Jeremiah Kipp blends elements of zombie horror, found footage, monsters on the loose, and a Lovecraftian end-of-the-world apocalyptic thriller into such a messy and barely coherent whole that one has to wonder if this guy has any decent grasp of proper narrative construction (the story keeps jumping around all over the place with often jarringly sloppy and disastrous results). The crummy cut-rate CGI effects add further abject insult to already appalling injury. Plus there's even a few gratuitously bared breasts tossed in for trashy good measure. A total fiasco that's nonetheless still loads of fun in a Grade Z schlockoid sort of way.
