It makes sense
ericstevenson5 July 2016
This wasn't one of the best episodes, but I would still watch the worst "Rick And Morty" episode over the best "Sonic Underground" episode. This one features a giant head coming to Earth asking for an original song who then brings the Earth to an "American Idol" like parody to judge their planet. Now, I will admit that this actually seems a lot like a certain episode of Jimmy Neutron, but this show just did it better. The gags are as good as ever. We even get some heartwarming moments as Morty goes back to help Rick.

It's certainly unpredictable and the real treat is Ice-T. It all makes more sense for his appearance by the end. While a crazy idea done in an hilarious execution, he really does come off as a sympathetic character in the end. I couldn't tell if this was pro or anti-religious. I like the idea of forming a new one over a being of immense power of which there is evidence of. I mean, that's what would happen in real life, right? I'm glad they have scenes after the credits of every episode. ***1/2

This is the best episode of the show ever (well in most ways).
entertainualltv2 September 2015
F*** all the haters who say this is the worst episode. Music is supposed to attract people to a TV show/movie, not steer them away. Anyway, this is the episode got me used to things I don't get used to when I watch internet videos and attracted me with it's music. Would love a full soundtrack, because so far, I love the 2 songs featured. Hell, I'd listen to the whole album if I had to. Back to the episode, and Morty's singing voice, the problem with his singing voice is it doesn't sound much like his speaking voice, which really bothers me. I understand that shaky voices are hard to do while singing, but only thing I'd say to the people behind the voices is try a bit harder next time.

I disagree with kevinniederman

Sup. Ice Tea saving the planet, Drunk Rick singing the schwifty song. Morty disagreeing with Rick on moral grounds and grabbing the nearest Rick technology and randomly pressing the buttons. Kevinniederman you seem like a real Morty. It's not an insult to most people because they don't know Morty, but you do, you know Morty don't you. So you know what i'm saying when i call you a Morty.

I loved this episode. The whole misinterpretation of the church followers. They interpret a completely false reality because they don't know the answers and listen to the guy who seems to make sense. No correlation there in our current religious doctrines at all.

The meaninglessness of our current fad with x-factor or Idol. They put the earth on the elimination round as a joke. We don't have the earth on the elimination round of a make believe reality contest every week because it's stupid. You can't do stupid every week. Just like Idol and X-factor, it's all a meaningless, stupid contest. These guys come up with original stuff to hold a mirror to our ordinary stuff. But when you look a bit deeper they say something about it.

Right from the start your review had me separated. Because this is classic Rick and Morty. I loved it. Made me laugh and made me think. Simpsons never did that

For head's sake, I came here thinking this episode got a 9.5 or smth, then found it's only 8.3 and some ppl complaining, really?

It's one of the best episodes. It describes how different ppl react to things in a very accurate and funny way.

Warning: Spoilers
It was a challenging and interesting episode. It was very, very great to joke with religion and it was really accurate. It's cool that this family is all sort of atheists!

Even when Rick and Morty is at its worst, it's still pretty Schwifty
VirgoGal628 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Keep in mind, this review is being written before all the episodes for Season 2 have been released.

***CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS***

I see where the other users are coming from; there's some weird music, the plot's kind of dull (at least for Rick and Morty) and the general story seems somewhat similar to South Park's episode S7E01 - Cancelled, in which the boys discover that Earth is nothing but a reality TV show. But in the end the combination of Summer/Jerry/Beth's subplot with the ridiculousness of the Ice T (is it Water T now?) subplot make for a pretty funny episode.

I originally expected the entire episode to be a musical, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that there were really only 2 songs in the whole episode. Rick and Morty's storyline became pretty funny and interesting after performing for the first time; The President of the United States being voiced by Keith David was a good detail (even if he voiced Reverse Giraffe in the previous episode I can't get enough of the man's voice, it's audible chocolate). Rick finally takes control and tries to teleport to his parents, only to find himself lost among portals. I only wish they used this idea for an entire episode, it seems like a big deal and a cool concept! They use this problem to reintroduce Bird Person which adds more humour because according to "bird culture" abandoning Rick with his own portal gun "is considered a dick-move".

Beth/Jerry/Summer's story became a pretty funny comment on religious extremism and perhaps the silliness of religion in general. All plots converge in the end when the Cromulon's (the giant heads in the sky) shatter the peoples' perceptions of the Cromulon's being deities and they finally decide to stop sacrificing people "Up (2009)" style.

The icing (heh) on the cake however was Ice T's subplot, who became the hero that he was born to be, returned from exile and rejoined his brethren on Alphabetrium!

TL;DR: What began as a mediocre episode quickly became schwifty and with Water T and the Rise of the Numericons, how can you go wrong?

Pretty great episode, broh!

Warning: Spoilers
I always hate it when Rick and Morty has certain episodes like Rick Potion #9 or The Ricks Must Be Crazy where we're not supposed to care what terrible stuff happens to anyone and what they do because the writers think life is meaningless, because that kills the stakes in other episodes like Meeseeks and Destroy, A Rickle in Time, Mortynight Run and this episode. This was obviously done so that we don't see when episodes fail because Rick (and even Morty in some cases) is too unlikable to care about. This obviously wasn't the case in Lawnmower Dogs or The Wedding Squanchers, which tell us that consequences in our own universe DO matter. It really helps that this episode is written by the same writer as The Wedding Squanchers. I liked the songs and the giant heads' loud voices were funny, as well as the head religion subplot. It was really a breath of fresh air (and a breath of fresh Summer) after the ending of Total Rickall made it hard for me to watch it again. I'm also really proud of Ice-T for finally caring about the Earth and the alphabetrium idea was also very creative.

What?
TheFirst017 June 2020
There's many reasons why I think this is the worst Rick and Morty episode yet. First of all, talking heads plot line didn't seem funny at all. Although taking a shot at religions with humor, it didn't quite did it for me in a show where science abounds the way to satisfy the talking heads is by being the best at singing. Overall, this episode didn't hit for me. To me it was annoying, and i wanted the episode to end. I won't give it a 7/10 cause I know it's not that horrible, it's just that imo out of every good episode of Rick and Morty that has come out this is the worst one but it's all just a matter of taste.

First Rick and Morty I really didn't enjoy
kevinniederman23 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This weeks episode of rick and Morty just couldn't do it for me. Right from the start the episode seems very much separated from the rest of the show. There's a big "fate of the world" vibe throughout the episode that just isn't present anywhere else in the series. One reason I really love this show is the emotional depth it often breaches, but this weeks interactions between Rick and Morty felt like a huge rehashing of last seasons finale, especially with the appearance of fan favorite Bird Person. The B story covers the irrational tones of religion and could have been funny if the personality hadn't have been stripped from the characters. Summer is my favorite character and she is 100% different this episode, in an almost uncomfortable way. I know that that change was the joke but, the whole thing felt foreign, like I was watching a different show for the first time, and it wasn't that great.

The head has left and sent his children

Warning: Spoilers
This episode wasn't as powerful and the rest of the Rick and morty series but it was still pretty good and interesting I love it just as much as I love the series.it's a quite unique one as well that it takes part in earth and the normal dimension unlike the rest that deals with inter dimensional travels and communicating with inter dimensional creatures.it wasn't a great episode but it wasn't bad it was just there compared to the entire Rick and morty series.would love to see more of this kind of episode but hoping to have more potential. Rick and morty have the chance to save the world while all is watching makes them look more heroic than any other episode.

Favourite Rick and Morty episode
cherylkyrandia4 April 2023
This has got to be one of the best episodes of Rick and Morty. I would liken it to Hunger Games but for planets. Each planet must come up with the catchiest tune or face the wrath of these weird space alien head things. The song that Rick and Morty come up is nothing short of catchy and pretty hilarious to listen to. Honestly, I don't know where the writers come up with this stuff. It's pure brilliance.

I would say that the gags in this episode are pretty hilarious. There's a lot of quirkiness in this show in general and this episode comes as a close tie to Pickle Rick - another great classic and favourite of mine.

Like a weak Futurama episode
roger_and_out5 December 2019
Few things go well with references to modern music. The music industry is probably the most accurate lens through which our society's decay is shown. I liked the religious mockery, but that was only a faint sparkle in the overall dullness.

Usually the characters in this show are interesting and complex, in this episode they're two-dimensional and predictable. Even Rick isn't himself, he's barely there because the real Rick would've found a quick and disastrous solution to this bore-fest.

I love this show, it's brilliant on many levels. But this episode is absolutely not an example of it.
