Lacks humor
Sawyer-481516234212 March 2018
Maybe this is just not my kind of comedy, but I found this movie to be boring and not humorous. I generally like quirky comedies and I don't mind dry humor but this one didn't do anything for me. I think my biggest problem is that I don't really like the main character. He's not funny and he lacks charisma. Maybe this was meant to be some kind of indie drama? I don't know. I honestly wanted to like this movie but I can't recommend it.

A beautiful portrayl of mental illness

Warning: Spoilers
I haven't watched any movie for the last ten days, and this was a great movie to get back on the tracks with. It's funny, wonderfully shot, charming and colorful. The film is mainly about mental illness and emotional distress, and it tackles this sensitive subject in a warm and compassionate style. So in this movie, we have characters with severe mental problems, yet they'd rather live in denial while layering it under tons of sarcasm. Which leads them to a sterile journey to find help and healing: mainly portrayed by the protagonist, same goes for his friend who learns that feelings are meant to be expressed not repressed. Still, at the end they add another character which is as important as these other 2," the sister". We spend the whole movie hearing about how much of a mess she was and her drinking problems in the past however when we get introduced to her she's this stable, wise and beautiful person who has nothing to do with what we've heard. She was a drunk and a mess but now she's the healthiest of them all, and she's the main reason her brother lands on his feet and admits he's not physically ill and he depressed. That's the message of the movie, it positively banalizes mental illness to show that mentally ill people aren't broke or a lost cause they're just like anyone else, and everyone can be exposed to it no matter how successful or sweet they are.

Sweet, Funny, and Nostalgic

5 Doctors is a truly unique coming of age comedy. It's got incredibly funny scenes and performances (Bobby Moynihan, a hilarious Joe Pera), but it really sets itself apart with the charming, easy chemistry between the two leads. The movie is subtle and really has something to say about getting older and going home. It's also full of knockout supporting performances, beautiful, warm cinematography, and great music. Can't recommend it enough.
