Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

American animated series Young Justice is considered one of the best superhero series ever made. Contrary to its title which suggests that it is an adaptation of Peter David, Todd Dezago, and Todd Nauck’s comic series, the TV series is an original story, set in the DC Universe. It primarily explores the adventures of teenage and young adult superheroes.
A still from Young Justice Season 3
Created by Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman, the series features numerous young heroes such as Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis. There are many other animated series based on DC characters, but what sets this one apart is the fact that the creators also intend to give an insight into the mental health of these saviors.
So much so, that there are multiple episodes in the series that focus on different mental health issues. Moreover, it is not just the creators...

While Francis Ford Coppola is, and always will be associated with his greatest work namely The Godfather trilogy, the prolific director was instrumental in kickstarting the careers of many A-list celebrities today. The director cast a bunch of young actors for his 1983 film The Outsiders which was based on the 1967 novel of the same name by S.E Hinton.

The film went on to gain critical acclaim and cult status over the years. More significantly, it catapulted the young actors in the film to superstardom. These actors were Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, and Rob Lowe among many others. In the 40th year of the film’s release, the Oscar-winning director revealed his off-beat audition process that resulted in the casting of these actors.

“When I blow up, I’m gonna go nuts,” Quentin Branch declares on “Stanley Kubrick,” a track from Angry Blackmen’s The Legend of Abm. The Chicago-based experimental hip-hop duo’s beats are distorted and dissonant, with traces of industrial-rock influence paired with a punk-tinged aggression. This contrast in sounds is mirrored by their vocal styles: Brian Warren offers a melodic touch, rapping in a quick sing-song manner with few pauses, while Branch leans toward more straightforward shouting.
Angry Blackmen’s dedication to this mode of uneasy listening is uncompromising throughout. The album’s production is enveloping, with sharp changes of dynamics and sustained, ominous electronics. “Fna” opens with blown-out 808s, while “Dead Men Tell No Lies” ends on the repeated title phrase, filtered so it barely even sounds like a human voice.

For the second year in a row, Fox is not releasing a fall schedule ahead of its upfront presentation.
Fox did the same thing in 2022, opting instead to announce their content slate for the upcoming broadcast season but holding off on announcing a formal schedule until a later date. Last year, the move came as the network was still waiting on decisions on the dramas “9-1-1” and “The Resident.” But with the latter show canceled and the former moving to ABC, this year’s move comes as the writers’ strike enters its third week.
Networks like CBS and NBC have already announced their fall lineups, but whether or not any primetime scripted shows across all the networks debut as scheduled remains to be seen as the strike drags on.
“Obviously nobody wants this strike and our thoughts go out to the writers at the moment,” said Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade...

Truth be told, short movies are not exactly usually of the genre variety, with the duration of the format essentially forcing filmmakers to follow more art-house paths. Considering, however, that, among the cinema of Asian countries, Korea is the one “in charge” of genre cinema nowadays, it is no surprise that a director from the particular country decided to follow a genre path for his 27-minute short.

Taskmaster seems to be one of those magically perfect TV shows, but of course the root of its genius isn’t magic at all: it’s a whip-smart combination of Alex Horne’s original format, the comedic force of nature that is Greg Davies in the role of the Taskmaster, and relentlessly good casting.

Francis Ford Coppola is known for big swings throughout his career, but one of his biggest was filming the adaptations of S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” and “Rumble Fish” back-to-back and releasing them both in 1983 only months apart. The two movies’ filmmaking styles could not possibly be more different, with the lush Technicolor palette of “The Outsiders” giving way to the shadowy, moody black-and-white of “Rumble Fish,” a film so stylish in its look that it became a prototype for indies in years to come.
This is thanks to cinematographer Stephen H. Burum, the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the international cinematography festival EnergaCamerimage in Poland. Burum was on hand after a retrospective screening of “Rumble Fish,” one of many of his films screened throughout festival. (Others range from “St. Elmo’s Fire” to “The Untouchables” to “Hoffa;” he received an Oscar nomination for the latter.) The 82 year-old lenser,...

Never fear, doc lovers — Doc NYC, America’s largest documentary film festival, is not only back for in-person movie-going but also maintaining the hybrid format it embraced during last year’s edition.
As ever, this year’s lineup encompasses a predictably wide range of subjects and stories, including everything from the inspiring tale of an uber-talented female surfer (opening night pick “Maya and the Wave”) to an animated documentary that covers entire centuries of insidious anti-semitic hate (closing night film “The Conspiracy”), plus a Barbara Kopple joint about the need to empower minority communities and a close look at life inside Cirque du Soleil after the early days of pandemic shutdowns.
The 2022 lineup includes more than 110 feature-length documentaries plus more than 100 short film offerings. If that wealth of options sounds daunting, the festival has cleverly assembled its sprawling lineup around a variety of topics. On offer: Themes as diverse as “Celebrity” and “Cities,...

It cannot be overstated just what a massive hit Tim Burton's "Batman" was in 1989. It was an advertising bonanza the world hadn't ever seen before. In terms of cultural ubiquity, "Batman" handily outstripped "Star Wars," and nearly matched the franchise in its merchandising. In one of cinema history's sweetest plum deals, Jack Nicholson — who played the Joker — not only received top billing but cut his own salary to a mere 6 million in exchange for a percentage of the film's merch sales. He ultimately earned about 90 million. The film was made for a budget of 48 million. It earned about 411 million worldwide. That's nearly a billion dollars in 2022.
Given the tone and look of the movie, one might see the overwhelming success of "Batman" as a little odd. Designed after German expressionist films of the 1920s and 1930s, "Batman" was arch and artificial. It was shadowy and tragic. Unlike Richard Donner's "Superman" from 20 years previous,...

This post contains spoilers for "Black Adam."
DC's "Black Adam" props up Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) as an unconventional super-powered being who reluctantly winds up in a position to protect the modern world from evil. Despite his undefined stance on heroism, Teth-Adam teams up with the Justice Society to stop the Intergang from acquiring a crown of primordial power connected to the demon champion, Sabbac. After Intergang's leader, Ishmael (Marwan Kenzari), manipulates events to trigger the rebirth of Sabbac in his host body, Black Adam and the Justice Society of America attempt to fight this super-powered, awakened demon who seems to be powerful beyond measure. The battle is rife with hurdles, but dogged determination and sacrifice allow Teth-Adam and the others to overpower and kill Sabbac.
There are several differences between "Black Adam" and its comics storyline, including the details of Teth-Adam's origins and the origins of the Jsa members. The...

Rob Lowe believes there’s a good chance that his father and Drew Barrymore’s mother hooked up in the ’80s at a popular Los Angeles nightclub.

William Schmidt has dropped out of the race for the WGA West presidency and support Phyllis Nagy against incumbent WGA West president David Goodman in the upcoming election.
Schmidt, whose credits include “Yellowstone,” “Outsiders” and “Charmed,” has campaigned for the past two months in opposition to Goodman’s directive for members to fire their agents if they had not signed the WGA Code of Conduct. At least 7,000 agents have been fired.
Schmidt made the announcement Wednesday night at the guild’s candidates meeting at the Writers Guild Theatre in Beverly Hills. He admitted that he and Nagy did not receive a positive response, adding, “It was pretty ugly.”
Schmidt, a 37-year member of the guild, and Nagy are running against Goodman in an election that’s widely seen as a referendum on the WGA’s hard-nose tactics versus a more accommodating approach. Ballots go out Aug. 29 and results will be announced Sept.

William Schmidt, who’s challenging incumbent WGA West president David Goodman in the upcoming election, has accused guild leadership of bringing chaos to the industry.
Schmidt, whose credits include “Yellowstone,” “Outsiders” and “Charmed,” has campaigned for the past two months in opposition to Goodman’s directive for members to fire their agents if they had not signed the WGA Code of Conduct. At least 7,000 agents have been fired.
Schmidt, a 37-year member of the guild, and Phyllis Nagy are running against Goodman in an election that’s widely seen as a referendum on the WGA’s hard-nose tactics versus a more accommodating approach. Ballots go out Aug. 29 and results will be announced Sept. 16.
Schmidt sent out an email to members Wednesday stressing that he’s been impressed at membership meetings by the passion many of the young people expressed for the WGA.
“In showing their solidarity, they honor the thousands...

The quality rebounds as the focus narrows as Young Justice: Outsiders starts barrelling towards its season finale.

This Young Justice: Outsiders review contains spoilers.
Young Justice Season 3 Episode 22
Grading on a relative scale, last week's episode of Young Justice was a debacle. It was too busy and too rushed. This week's episode, "Antisocial," fixes almost every problem with "Unknown Factors" by dramatically narrowing its scale. It sacrifices some action in doing so, but this episode really starts thundering towards the finale and pushing plot lines to their inevitable conclusions.
The action starts out focused at the Outsider's Hollywood headquarters. Everyone is recovering from their ordeal in Granny's X-Pit, but the only one nearing death is Dick. Batman grabs Oracle, Robin, Aquaman and Miss Martian for a private conference, and Black Lightning pieces everything together. He figures out that the resignations were staged, and that the team has...

Amazon has released another full trailer for their incredibly cool new Victorian fantasy series, Carnival Row. This latest trailer offers even more footage from the show and gives us our best look yet at the story and what it had to offer. I’ve liked everything that I’ve seen from this show so far and I’m curiously excited to see how the story plays out.
The series stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne and it’s an eight-part series set in a “Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette harbors...

William Schmidt has offered to drop out of the race for presidency of the Writers Guild of America West and endorse David Goodman — if Goodman returns to the bargaining table with agents by September.
Schmidt disclosed the offer Friday, saying he had breakfasted with Goodman and found him to be warm, gregarious and funny.
“While he seemed irritated at my going public with the unconstitutionality of the e-letter to agents, we only had one point of disagreement, the timing of negotiations with the Big Four,” Schmidt said. “I want them to begin immediately, he’s willing to wait awhile more.”
Goodman is seeking re-election with results announced Sept. 16. Phyllis Nagy is also seeking the presidency, running on a similar platform on the Writers for Negotiation slate.

What the heavens?!
Lifetime is at it again with its Book-to-Screen series, and this time, it's adapting another V.C. Andrews series to accompany the batshit crazy Flowers in the Attic series.
There is no shortage, after all, so bring on the Casteel family drama!
Lucky for you guys, this is my first experience with this series having never read the books, and so far, the summation of my reaction is "what, and I cannot emphasize this enough, the f**k?"
Heaven is the first movie in the series, and it's peak entertainment if you watch it as an accidental comedy as the good lord intended.

It also helps if you took a shot of Moonshine every time you heard or thought the word "twisted." Please, always drink responsibly though; alcohol poisoning is real (and a...

We’ve got another trailer to share with you for Amazon’s upcoming victorian fantasy series Carnival Row. The new trailer offers more new footage, new story details, and is also set to Billie Eilish’s song ‘Bury A Friend’.
The series star Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne and Amazon has announced that they’ve renewed it for a Season 2. They are obviously happy with how the series turned out and confident that people are going to tune in to watch. I really like what I’ve seen from the series so far and looking forward to checking it out!
