The wired idea of a person going through a wall might be strength in the first place, but when one is arranging yourself with this though, it is really nice to see how this idea is developed. Beside doing things one would might do with this ability (like spying on your neighbour, the woman you are in love with, stealing stuff or annoying your boss). The ability is even expanded - with ideas I would never came up with- like chaining the policeman to the wall. At the end of the movie one asks yourself the question, if you had this power would you keep it or not. An unremarkable insurance expert lives a life of the most bland and boring mediocrity. The arrival of an agreeable female colleague re-awakens old stirrings. At the same time the man discovers that he has a strange super-power : he is capable of walking through solid objects such as walls...
I gather "Le passe-muraille" is a remake of an older comedy, which I never saw. As a result I watched the movie without luggage, good or bad.
"Le passe-muraille" (good title !) is a pleasantly watchable comedy, quietly witty and poetic rather than laugh-out-loud funny. Its main assets are good, nicely nuanced performances - protagonist Denis Podalydès is excellent - and a successful blend of whimsy and realism. Modest and understated, the movie still succeeds in shooting some well-deserved harpoons at the giant white whale that is modern business culture. Many viewers will recognize the protagonist's working environment, complete with managers who repeat unfunny buzzwords and recondite slogans. ("Let's all cook vegetable soup !")
There's an important life lesson too : as the movie states, there are few moral vices as dangerous and stultifying as safe mediocrity.
