CBS has announced the first members of its cast for the network's new daytime drama, Beyond the Gates (previously The Gates). The series will feature Tamara Tunie, Daphnee Duplaix, and Karla Mosley as its leading ladies. It will follow the Dupree family in a gated community outside Washington, D.C. The new daytime series will arrive on CBS in early 2025.

A press release revealed more about the roles the women will play and the series.

Longtime Wabc-tv exec and Live With Kelly and Mark staple Art Moore, who announced his impending retirement last May after 53 years with the network, bid farewell on Friday’s telecast.

During an on-air exit interview conducted by Live hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos (watch above), Moore shared that he intends to continue watching the show. “I may send notes in,” he cracked.

All eyes are turning to Beyond the Gates (formerly known as The Gates) now that the casting announcements have started. Eagerly awaiting soap lovers have gotten a taste of what to expect thanks to reported character descriptions prior to the official rollout. It's important to note that those may or may not stick and the names of the characters likely won't either but it's exciting nonetheless.

There's been hope that soap opera veterans and darlings who've been off-screen for awhile will be able to make a return in this CBS daytime original. I know I've had my fingers and toes crossed for that possibility and I've gotten my wish. A former The Bold and the Beautiful star is in the cast!

The news comes as no surprise, as the British investment banking drama enjoyed explosive ratings growth in recent weeks.

Filming is expected to get underway this fall on CBS’s first Black one-hour daytime drama Beyond the Gates. With the series about to head into production, the network announced the first three cast members: Tamara Tunie (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Daphnee Duplaix (One Life to Live), and Karla Mosley (The Bold and the Beautiful).

CBS Studios/NAACP Venture developed and produce the series in partnership with P&g Studios. Michele Val Jean created the new daytime drama and serves an executive producer and showrunner. Additional executive producers include Sheila Ducksworth, Robert Guza Jr., Julie Carruthers, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson, Kimberly Doebereiner, and Anna Saalfeld.

CBS is targeting an early 2025 premiere.

Beyond the Gates will be the first daytime drama centered around Black characters since NBC’s Generations in 1989.

The three actress will be part of the Dupree family, who are at the core of the series and described as “a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty.”

Tunie will play matriarch Anita Dupree, a “one-time famous singer married to a retired senator who retains a fierceness from her upbringing in Chicago,” via THR.

Duplaix will play Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson, “one of Anita’s two daughters, a philanthropist and psychiatrist whose life seems perfect — from the outside.

The floodgates have finally opened! Since CBS announced the creation of a new daytime drama featuring the Duprees, a wealthy Black family living their best life in a luxury gated community, fans have been waiting for the casting news. That time is now, and here’s what we know about Beyond The Gates.

Title and Time

Until now, the project that CBS Studios is producing in conjunction with the NAACP has been known as The Gates. However, with this casting windfall comes news that the title has changed. From here on out, the first soap created in 25 years will be known as Beyond The Gates.

What’s even better news is that Beyond The Gates (Btg) will be the first Black one-hour daytime drama to air on television. In fact, Generations, NBC’s groundbreaking African-American soap that aired in the early ’90s, was a 30-minute show.

The show comes from daytime O.G. Michele Val Jean, who worked on “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “General Hospital.” It will follow the lives of a wealthy Black family who lives in a luxurious gated community.

Thursday’s news confirms the title — updated from “The Gates” — and sets production for later this fall in Atlanta with a premiere slated for early 2025 (January ’25 was the given date upon the initial greenlight). The program marks the first-ever one-hour Black daytime soap opera and the first new daytime drama to premiere since “Passions” in 1999.

Tamara Tunie, Daphnee Duplaix, and Karla Mosley are all joining the series, which was originally picked up at the broadcast network in April under the title “The Gates.” As previously reported, the show was developed under CBS Studios’ content partnership with the NAACP. The show will begin production this fall in Atlanta and will premiere on CBS in early 2025.

Barbara Crampton is the queen of indie horror. Gracious and humble as she is, it’s a title she would most likely reject. These are precisely among the qualities that make her an icon: she’s a leader in the industry who makes it a point to bring others up, a gigantic star too nice to ever act like one. She’s the absolute best and deserves to be celebrated not just during #IndieHorrorMonth, but all year long.

From her earliest genre performances in movies like Re-Animator, Chopping Mall, and From Beyond, there was something special about Crampton. She could lend gravity and empathy to even the most outrageous scenario, from the notorious decapitated head scene in Re-Animator to the giant robot battles of Full Moon’s Robot Wars, to which she brings energy and spunk worthy of Marion Ravenswood. There may be no one in independent horror having more of a moment right now than Brea Grant. Hex Studios, the horror house behind The Devil’s Machine and The Black Gloves has recently been making waves with their new YouTube channel Channel Hex. In the few short months since its inception, the channel has showcased indie horror shorts and features, hosted an online horror film festival, and produced two brand new movie review series. The latest addition to their slate is perhaps their most ambitious yet. Retro interview show Hex Talks sees Hex Studios founder Lawrie Brewster take the role of chat show host in a series of interviews with icons of the horror genre.

The film, which was produced by Talk Story Pictures and is being distributed by The Horror Collective, will be released on February 25th, 2020 on VOD and digital platforms.

The film had its world premiere at Los Angeles’ Shriekfest Horror Film Festival, where it won Best Thriller Feature Film and Best Male Performance in a Feature Film (Chase Williamson). The film also recently won the Audience Award for Best Thriller Feature at San Francisco’s Another Hole in the Head Film Festival.

Exclusive: Producer Shaked Berenson has teamed with former Dread Central Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Barkan to launch the new genre distribution label The Horror Collective. The banner will be under Berenson’s production/distribution outfit Entertainment Squad and Barkan will head the venture which plans to release 10-12 films per year.

Like the name of the distribution label suggests, The Horror Collective is building itself to become a destination that fosters independent horror filmmakers and connect their films to fans. It will also finance and produce original content. The outfit’s inaugural film will be Elza Kephart’s Slaxx, which was the first project financed Entertainment Squad and will be released by The Horror Collective and enter the festival circuit in Q1 2020. Berenson financed and executive produced the Slaxx with long collaborator, Anne-Marie Gélinas of Ema Films.

One of my favorite parts of the Halloween season is listening to seasonal music, be it classics like “Grimm Grinning Ghosts” from Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride or familiar tracks from horror movies like Alice Cooper’s “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Hell, I’ll even do deep cuts like Frank Vinci’s “Just What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sleepaway Camp or Gowan’s “Moonlight Desires,” most recently used in WolfCop. I’m lucky enough to have friends that make me Halloween mixes, too, giving me plenty to listen to all month long.

This years Grimmfest special guest was actress and horror genre icon Barbara Crampton. Renowned for her roles in cult classics such as Re-Animator and From Beyond, Barbara continues to be a major figure in contemporary genre cinema, appearing in such acclaimed recent releases as You’re Next, Beyond the Gates, Sun Choke, We Are Still Here and Replace. Revered eighties horror icon Barbara Crampton is as popular now as she’s ever been, largely due to the next generation of horror directors who came of age watching her earlier work who are now casting her in their own genre offerings. Guest of honour at this year’s Grimmfest in Manchester, Crampton also cropped in three of the films screening there, including a welcome revisit of the aforementioned Stuart Gordon classic in which she initially made her name, the intriguingly-structured cabin in the woods horror Dead Night, and the hilarious and gore-filled Puppet Master reboot, entitled Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich.

We had to change to grab some time with Crampton during the festival – she also participated in some fun post-screening Q&As for her films – where we talked about the legacy of her work from decades back, and the more hands-on approach she enjoys taking with some of her recent films.
