The film is set 20 years after the original.
Development of a sequel began in the late 90s through 2010 as a direct-to-video sequel, but nothing went anywhere. Later in May 2016, Sony Pictures announced that a faithful sequel to The Craft (1996) was in development and would be written and directed by Leigh Janiak. It was scrapped due to negative reactions from fans of the original. Then in March 2019, it was then announced that Blumhouse Productions was developing a full blown remake, but because of more backlash from fans for being a remake, Sony panicked and re-shot additional scenes, at the last minute, to try to connect to the original movie as a soft-reboot instead. (Including the ending which was a re-shoot.)
Easter Egg: A scene (at DVD time: 14:26) from the original The Craft (1996) is shown in a photograph in Lily's photo album (at DVD time: 52:56). This scene - from the original - is when they first enter Lirio's Occult Shop. It shows the tile art (on the wall) of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the candles burning in the candelabras in front of it.
The phrase "We Are The Weirdoes...Mister", used in the 1996 original by Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk), is spoken once again by coven member Tabby (Lovie Simone). However, in the trailer, Lily (Cailee Spaeny) says that phrase in a completely different scene that does not appear in the movie.
There were three Occult Consultants involved with the production.
