Very, very good indeed.

Mathias is on the case of a Minister is found dead at a chapel, his head bashed in.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, I'm glad I'd recently watched series two, as it is all interlinked. It's very well written, deep and rewarding, with a very satisfying conclusion.

I like the bit of tension that exists in the team, there's a definite sense of unease, it becomes apparent that Mathias is hiding something.

Some terrific Welsh talent on show including Sian Rees Williams and Gwyneth Keyworth, the latter in particular is excellent.

The location work is exquisite, the local area is incredibly beautiful, yet harsh looking, it feels like an extra character in the story, a foreboding figure.

Such a shame this turned out to be the beginning of the end. 9/10.

Who murdered a village minister?
Tweekums7 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The first story of the third series, sees DCI Tom Mathias investigating the murder of a local minister. At first it appears that he was a pillar of the local community but it soon becomes apparent that that the way he treated his wife and family left a lot to be desired and he had upset some of his parishioners; notably a father who he had told it was 'God's will' that his child had died.

While this is going on there is still the question of who attacked Mathias and burnt his caravan at the end of series two and what their motive was. This is investigated by DS Sian Owens with Chief Supt Prosser taking a distinct interest; as the episode reaches its conclusion this plot strand takes a dramatic turn.

This was a solid series opener. I'd forgotten just how oppressive an atmosphere there was; this adds to the claustrophobic feel of the small community where much of the action takes place. Richard Harrington and Mali Harries continue to impress as protagonists DCI Mathias and DI Mared Rhys and the guest cast are also solid. The main story was gripping if more than a little depressing; especially at its resolution; this storyline ended somewhat sooner than I expected leaving the remainder of the episode to search for the man who attacked Mathias; it looks as this plot strand could run throughout the series; it already refers back to events that came before. Overall this was another good story with a gripping finale that left me keen to see what comes next.

I watched the bilingual version of the first two series but for the first time I decided to watch the Welsh version; the only real difference as far as the characters are concerned is that Mathias is now a Welsh speaker. This version was aired as two forty-five minute episodes rather than a single episode of one hour thirty minutes. Having all dialogue subtitled actually made the story much easier to follow as the subtitles were easier to read than those used when characters spoke Welsh in the bilingual versionÂ… to be honest I'm surprised that BBC4 doesn't broadcast this version as it is shown in the 'subtitled drama' slot.

The Death of a Minister
Hitchcoc30 August 2017
This is a well done episode that sets up the events that will conclude the series. A minister has been murdered, his head bashed in with a hammer. Mathias and Rhys investigate and find that this priest was a total ass, abusing his family, a true hypocrite. Meanwhile, Mathias is being investigated for his dealings with Iwan Thomas, who burned down his Caravan and struck him on the head. Prosser is at the center of all this and his fears are based on Thomas's apparent ability to put two and two together. The sins of the father have affected the entire family and this leads to a sad conclusion. The concluding event is going to be hard to explain away.
