A smooth and romantic ballad about childhood
nhpenter6 October 2015
Victor Vu is one of the best directors in Viet Nam, and he gave us an awesome film which based on Nguyen Nhat Anh's "I see yellow flowers on the green grass" Entire of the film is a story about Thieu and his little brother - Tuong. Everything run slowly, smoothly with many beautiful pictures in Phu Yen province's countryside. The background of the film is in 1989, viewers can have a overview about Viet Nam at that time: poor, destitute but truly full of love. Following 2 little boys's story, viewers will seem to be come back to their childhood with traditional games, works and even the change in thought of Thieu - teenage boy. It is very pure, sincere but selfish. I bet that all people always want to keep in mind all of their memories about that. From my point of view, the bigger drama, the more completion. Let's enjoy the movie and recall your childhood!

A beautiful poem

A movie that asks you to be both patient and naïve (in a childish manner, so to speak).

Failing upon those, it might come as tedious and cheesy.

If both are embraced, it all feels like a beautiful poem on love and all other encompassing emotions.

a lightly romantic movie for teenager
ngocminh16079315 December 2019
It is not for people, who love action movie. The movie is really slow and try to express the change in teenager's emotion for their first love. In addition, the movie express the strong bond between brothers in family.

A ticket to childhood
gnguyen1026 October 2015
Most significant cinematography masterpiece from Victor Vu yet.

The movie is set in 1980's rural area of Vietnam and the story follows 12-year old Thieu, his 7-year old brother Tuong and Thieu's childhood crush Moon. The brothers do everything together, play in rice paddies, running errands, sleep on same bed...their days are filled with curious adventures. Then one day Moon comes into the picture and incites Thieu's insecurities and jealousy towards his brother Tuong who, by hid nature, is trusting and full of innocence. Even when Thieu inflicts physical harm to Tuong, the younger brother continues to idolize Thieu and constantly seeks his approval.

One could easily pick up that the movie is a string of small episodes involving the lives of these three characters in rural area where resources are scarce and that the welfare sometimes depends on the sacrifices made.

This movie will strangely cleanse your inner humanity

I just watched this movie. Such a great movie! Safe to say one of the best I've ever watched. It was so... authentic!

Personally, as a Vietnamese American, I admit I will be a little biased in reviewing this movie. At the same time, I don't usually write review so this review wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for this movie.

I love every single main character, namely Moon and the two brothers. Their relationship with the viewers and with each other develops very nicely throughout the movie. It was simple and genuine yet also very complex and emotional.

The images, the angles, the music, the CGI, basically all the artistic elements of this movie worked very well! Beautiful sceneries mixed in with authentic crises are what made this movie so mesmerizing. I was so glad I was able to watch the movie. Vietnamese film has definitely come a long way.

A beautiful journey of life

Warning: Spoilers
The film was made by Vietnamese director Victor Vu. A film is all about the stories in a small Vietnamese village. The film bring the viewer a gentle feeling. I was strongly affected by the green grass scenes of the countryside, the folk music and the characters. They remind me about every beautiful things in my childhood, those boys who has no reason but fighting each others, our first love,.... Three kids have their own characters but still innocent and full of love. The most favorite scenes of mine is Thieu holds the frog, cries and runs in the rain in slow motion. But the stories has nothing special. In fact, there has unconnected movie script, makes me feel something was missing. But it still a good movie to relax.

Amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
I see about 6-7 movies in the cinema a year but the first standing ovation I gave, was in, was this film. I don't know why but i cried for this movie.

Love, the main message of the film, was not evident in the lines or even clear action. But to search, to pay attention, to feel, you can not see. It's like a warm glow but just peeks out from behind a mesh screen, the poverty, the mature emotions surface disturbance, or even acts of Shaoguan lead to serious consequences. Many blame Thieu for "morsel of food" that hit me, but did not mean to eat pieces? Like shown excellence of Vinh Thinh, if you smile they will see the tenderness and innocence, but his eyes are sharp anger fascinated, in Thieu is a collection of numerous conflicting emotions. Are only from love. Thieu would not hate it if people can see when you have touched only bruising to bring two potatoes on the walls and plum. "It's potatoes for human boy with Plums Wall," they shouted. Three stars only two potato? I also do not retain their tubers. It was love, and light in and unconditional love as for the Cu He Walls. And only great love, when thought of betrayal, new actions lead to big mistakes. Many people just see the father in the film is always threatening, demanding beat children, and knocked off when children foul. It is they never have, or have not met the father was a casual employee. Many others will find familiar. The father seems far way, just say the whole word arid, who also fasted devoted three children when the floods. He sold cattle to care for children, poured sweat pull it off treatment amid snooping eyes, detailed mainstream cinema showing great thinking of Victor Vu. Poor house, but he and his wife still bore Plums not a complaint. What is the situation there, and Vietnamese soul is there. It was not evident, not to be spoken as "I love you" or "I love you", but it is full and warm. And waiting to be discovered, like so many other messages about the family in the movie. Maybe the movie was cut short more than the story, but can not speak it worse. Yellow flower still plump in cinematic. For details about the image intended symbolic "Golden Flower" is used cleverly and subtly. With lead neat, his stylish, showing the names of Victor Vu, and the way he directed the child actors a great role. In the three main characters, no other actor was "short" or pale next to the rest. Along with Vinh Thinh, Trong Khang and Thanh America to fulfill their role. In addition to praise the part directed by Vietnamese Linh voice transformed, exactly as language early childhood, and they are true timbre children. Thus, the film can be a dialogue of humor gander make viewers laugh. And all the pleasant nature of interaction between them on screen, become "characters" in truth, is very worthwhile but few ever do movies Vietnam.

A beautiful memory
nngonguyenbaongoc18 July 2022
"Yellow flowers on the green grass" is a 2015 Vietnamese drama, which was directed by Victor Vu. It is adapted from the novel of the same name by Nguyen Nhat Anh. The film stars Thinh Vinh and Trong Khang. Although there aren't any famous actors, the film attracted a large audience.

The film is about the childhood of the brothers Thieu (Thinh Vinh) and Tuong (Trong Khang) in a poor rural village in central Vietnam in the 1980s. They share and do everything together. However, when their friend next door Man (Thanh My), comes to stay with them and a big flood hits their village, there is a big misunderstanding that leads to Tuong's back injury. The film has an open ending with the scene of Thieu and Tuong studying in their house.

The film received many positive reviews from critics for its touching story, beautiful and familiar scenery of the country in Vietnam, and the especially impressive acting of three main actors.

The film touches audiences' hearts because it is about a story of childhood but it is not childish nor for only children; it's for adults who used to be children. It makes them cry and laugh together when they remember their own childhood, hometown and family. The film is well worth watching.

Warning: Spoilers
The scenes are nice but: Boring messy story Doesnt have anything to do with neither my childhood nor any Vietnamese one. I am really afraid that some foreigners can watch this and assume that my childhood was something like this. It's 100% not! I would recommend this for anyone want to see well retouched unreal Vietnam's countryside. Just like you see a pts photo. and that's it, nothing more

Not really understand the story much
nguyenhan-6925316 July 2021
The view, the picture, the music is very good. It makes me remember a lot when I was a kid, the horror stories that our grandma usually told us. It's so familiar. But the reason I point it 6/10 is because of the story, I mean it hard for me to follow the story, I think it is a little bit too fast.
