A Breath of Fresh Air
anshumankmr8013 May 2015
Season 7 had not been the best of seasons of Castle with ratings having fallen with quite a few poorly written episodes. However the writers have finally taken the show in an fresh and new direction devoid of clichés which is unusual for a lighthearted procedural like Castle. Though there were a few details overlooked, all in all it was fine episode in which they managed to show how effective a team Castle and Beckett can be really are which was an improvement over the previous rather too Castle centric episodes and they also showed how their relationship has moved forward. Also, the performances of the actors were all quite well done especially that of Stana's. A definite 10/10 after a long while.

Additional Quote
skirnirh19 May 2015
I would like to add an additional quote from the episode that I rather liked.

Kate Beckett: "We're here because of who we are in the face of people like him. That's why you write mysteries. That's why I became a cop. We are both trying to bring justice to this world."

I did also like Castle's line to his daughter when she asked about when he knew he wanted to be a writer and how she had no idea what she wanted to do. I do wish I could believe that everything we have done in life will lead to something, a passion, a calling.

Overall, I liked this episode.

A great way to end the season!

Warning: Spoilers
This was, after "Always", my favorite season finale of Castle. It was just so brilliant, I teared up a few times during the episode. The case was a really big one, the one that brought answers to Castle, and the fans, letting us know why he became a writer. It was written wonderfully, the dialogue was amazing! I can't wait to see what's gonna happen with Beckett's career. But, in the time travel episode, I think the guy said that Beckett would become a state senator. I don't know if it was done intentionally, but I loved how it tied up. The barn scene, oh my god, I absolutely loved the scene. I won't ruin it to you by going into detail. All in all, this was a great way to end an amazing season. A must watch!

a great finale

Warning: Spoilers
This is, for me, the best season finale of the show, although I would have kept the suspense and split the case into 2 episodes, having them catch the killer in the first episode of Season 8. It was, however, a pretty good episode, with a lot of intense moments but I am willing to bet they initially thought just like I said, to have a 2 episodes case, than changed their minds and condensed it into a single one, which is visible in the rather abrupt way it ends and in the big jumps they make in solving it. Anyway, I loved how Kate handled the situation when that guy accused her of all those terrible things (but, let's face it, they are all true after all). But I still hope she will say no to politics and keep being a detective, she is so good at it. This being said, a full 10 from me.

A Review - so far
estathena21 September 2022
Having watched the series during its original broadcast and again - binged watched through hulu, I have noticed a downturn in quality: season 1 - 5 had the occasional bad episode while season 6 - 7 had the occasional good episode.

When you start doing themed episodes you're showing your age and your lack of enthusiasm. There's a tiredness to the storylines, the characters, & the acting that can't be ignored or denied. I'm a fan until the end but sadly, the end didn't come soon enough.

I do hope that the final season returns to its first season vigor, that the series ends on a high note for the show's creators as well as its loyal fans.

Castle's Story gets better
EllieMBlake27 April 2023
"One day you will look back and you will realise that every experience you ever had, every seeming mistake or blind alley was actually a straight line to who you were meant to be." ~ Rick Castle

This quote resonates with me. As time goes by, I feel like this is so true and it helps me to see everything with a different mindset and perspective.

This episode takes the origins of Castle's story, his why he writes and creates a compelling story that adds much more to his character. It makes him less one dimensional, which often he seemed during season 1. Other than his humour and love for his daughter, they always needed more depth for him, and this glimpse into his path makes me enjoy the show even more.

Beckett's career is also full of tension and conflict. I've always loved how they have a strong successful woman. I've often wished they would do a reboot called Beckett.

Missed the boat
Originator199411 June 2015
This season lacked intrigue and spark ...It needs a jump start, something to spark and hold the viewers attention. In the beginning , there was levity, humor , sarcasm and so much more . We have seen Becketts appearance loom from sultry to just plain Jane. She started out with a hairstyle that rocked and makeup that accentuated her eyes but as the seasons wore on, her hair got light and scraggly ...Like now that she landed her man, she didn't need to dress to impress. By the time season 7 rolled around , we had just another female with hair too long for her age and looking dirty and uncombed.

Although this was one of the better episodes of the season ,the writers totally missed a golden opportunity to do a flashback to season 6 episode 5 which aired on 10/21/13 "Time Will Tell" wherein the guest character called Kate "senator " and predicted she and Castle would have three kids "...and then comes this seasons final episode where Kate is asked to run for the senate ...did anyone else pick up on this tidbit from the past to see it ignored for the season finale ?

You can't keep a bad script down
collinb-313 May 2015
While I've enjoyed the series it has gotten long in the tooth. This episode looked like the writers took the old season-ending cliff-hanger and condensed it in order to begin the final season afresh. It jumped between points too quickly and ended too conveniently. One might hope that the final season be done well. No more of the synchronized "I know who did it" line that was funny for a while.

It's time to let Castle follow the direction set by Joshua Gomez and become a serious writer. In real life there have been great crime/fantasy & serious writers such as Lewis & Chesterton. Let's see what the writers can accomplish in Season 8.

Oh No! Not more of that same tired old plot!
WYAdams20 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
They managed to turn a fair episode into an intolerably bad episode with more of that silliness about the murder of Beckett's mother, and her angst over it. When are they going to lay that silly plot line to rest and move on. It is almost as silly as the disappearance of Castle.

Here are the two hackneyed plot lines that earned this episode one star.

1) Beckett, loves Castle but she has to leave him to pursue the man behind the global plot to kill her mother. Gag me with a spoon. I thought they had buried that story line with the arrest of Senator Bracken, "but wait there's more!"

2) I am so tired of these stories where one of the major characters has to isolate himself/herself for some illogical reason. They use that tired old plot in almost every TV drama. I don't know what kind of world these writers live in but they need to get out in the real world and experience normal lives.

After watching this episode, I seriously considered not coming back for the next season because I really don't want to watch more of the tired old story about the characters having to be separated while they are still in love. I plan to fast forward (thank goodness for DVR's) through those inevitable and excruciating painful parts of the episodes.
