Another unpredictable revenge movie
Misss259 May 2021
The movie starts with assassinator trying to kill Choi who is the best police officer of the town. To save his ownself, he killed the assassinator. He removes all the prints and evidences and leaves the place. Next morning everyone finds a dead body hanging on the crane in front of the police station. Where the chief officer is pressing him to solve the case, he is hiding evidences against himself. At the point, he remember a case where four officers worked together and all are dead except him. He starting digging things more and more and find himself more entangle in this more. On the other hand, office officers get the video evidence of his murdering. What did the four officer do? Who is behind all this?

Personally, I loved it. It is quite interesting from starting to ending. It is hard to not keep on eye in it. I really didn't predict the last twist and the framing with a crime was mindblowing.

A very pleasant thriller to see

Warning: Spoilers
Akui Yeon-Dae-gi (2015) (Chronicles of Evil) Following a confrontation, the inspector Choi kills his attacker. To avoid making a stir just before his promotion, he decides to hide the accident. However, the next day the body was found hanging from a crane at the sight of all.

Two story will progress in parallel, one where Choi will try to cover his tracks by monitoring the police team investigating the case, how they found the clues, when he makes disappear evidence or videotapes; and at the same time he will try to unmask the real culprit, the one who pulls the strings from the shadows. The story does not wait and we are quickly thrown in, following the scheming and scenes, all with a very good tension. We follow the investigation and share with the protagonist every revelations, discoveries of traces and clues, while the stresses mounts, and we feel what he feels. The narration is built with a focus on Choi, but the tension level of the second and third act can not achieve the same level of excitement as the first, a sense of relief weakening one of the main intrigues. The twists are present, follow a balanced structure and allows the story to bounce from revelations to another, but the third party would have earned more depth, more development for the characters and motivations. Mobiles are meanwhile a little weak. The feelings revolve around the values of justice and integrity within the police, interesting in itself, but the characters do not gain in depth. They seem to live only for their job. We have some word from Choi over his family, making him the more human, but nothing for others. Choi is also a character that catches the viewer. We discover his personality and morality through the decisions they take in each of the crisis situations. What will he do, faced to a particular conflict? will he hide clues or will he follow the law? Speaking of actors, most fears and concerns are transmitted by the regard. Sometimes anxious, sometimes observer from afar, many internal emotions are left to interpretation via unspoken, small pats or a quick glance. It works reasonably well and does not prevent the explanatory speeches, loaded disorders, emotions or concerns. The images are correct, but does not release an identity, or give a personality to the film. Personally, I found that the editing made each plans each time a bit too short. Some action scenes get a little messy , while the same technique applied to the sound makes the music cutoff abrupt. Yet the music accompany the ambiance and adds a lot of strength to the problems and excitements.

A very pleasant thriller to see. 7/10

A familiar story, well told
Leofwine_draca20 August 2023
Another fun Korean cop thriller in which a corrupt cop finds himself caught in a devious, ever-tightening trap. There are stylistic similarities to genre classics like A HARD DAY and that '80s classic NO WAY OUT, but this one manages to plough its own furrow. The film benefits from the usual high quality production values we associate with Korean cinema, and delivers plenty of narrative in the running time. The protagonist is realistic rather than sympathetic, although you do get a winning turn from Ma Dong-seok, on the cusp of super stardom. Despite the familiarity of the story there's some good tension here and a twist ending that genuinely surprises.

Close to the top

I love the twists in Korean movies. They are obvious once you know them, but the whole trick is that you would have never guessed that this is the way it is going to happen. Here we are given many clues and still it isn't until the very end when everything becomes clear. I was positively surprised by Hyeon-ju Son playing the main character. I watched him at the same time in The Phone (2015) and thought here his role was much better. The movie is a nice introduction to Seo-Joon Park, who is recently becoming quite popular. If you liked him go and check 'Midnight Runners'.

Good thriller but the ending can either make of break the movie for you
EasternZZ26 July 2018
This thriller is actually really interesting. It is rather exciting to see the main character prevent himself from being discovered by the rest of his team. This movie starts out strong and has a good pace throughout, with the final act containing most of the action. This movie does end in a twist, and depending on how you feel, you can either go with it or completely black out. The twist is rather over the top, but it does make sense. The only issue I have is that during the final few minutes, this movie becomes a little bit too melodramatic, with characters crying, and the music becoming very sentimental and over-dramatic. This actually is something that is a trend in South Korean Action Thrillers (Example: Man From Nowhere, I saw the Devil, Taegukgi).

The Movie comes with a lot of twists and turns, with a nice twist at the end and a bit of an emotional climax!

The Chronicles of Evil is a 2015 South Korean thriller film directed by Beak Woon-hak. The film stars Son-hyun-joo and Dong-seok in the lead roles.

After receiving the award for best police officer, a taxi driver tries to kill Choi Chang-sik, who happily returns home after a night party with colleagues. In the end he killed him.

No eyewitnesses to the murder that took place at night! He leaves the body there.

But the next morning begins with some shocking events. Choi, who was returned his home after the incident, heard in the morning that someone had tied the body of this taxi driver to a huge crane in front of the police station.

The story that begins here is that the film goes on again with investigations and discoveries, through the emotional events that follow. In the meantime, without breaking any suspense, the story comes with a lot of twists and turns, with a nice twist at the end and a bit of an emotional climax!

The film manages to entertain as well as inform with its fast-paced storytelling, good thrilling BGM and thrilling scenes. 'The Chronicles of Evil' is a very good thriller.

Unexpectedly Superb Story unlike any other movie
taekonhong10 June 2020
Randomly came upon this movie and I have to say this was a great movie that I was totally not expecting in terms of the quality of this story. There are more than one twist and you have to watch till the end to experience this uniquely interesting story.

I've seen cops, gangsters, thriller, action etc Korean movies and generally get a good feel about the movie with few surprises here and there. But I have to say this movie took another step.

Watch it and you will know what I mean and I am pretty sure you will enjoy it even if you are not a fan of Korean movies. This is a good solid movie worth spending couple of hours.

Good thriller.. worth it
dewireadmore28 January 2022
Must be airing in Netflix. This Original better than remake. Solid script. See other side of Park Seo Joon... his acting. Hyun Joo and Ma Dong Seok too ... Captain Choi: It's easy to be kind, but hart to be fair...

Well made mystery thriller ...
azarrudheenrafeeq17 April 2020
The story revolves around the cop who killed a unknown man for self-defense during a murder attempt, trying to connect the mystery behind the murder attempt . The performances of lead actors are fine. The biggest strengths of the movie are well crafted screenplay and unexpected twist in climax. The way they solving the mystery behind the series of events is very impressive. The emotional connect shown in climax of the movie is worked really well

Totally unexpected
newkrejados22 October 2020
Just when you think you've got the story figured out, everything flips and those who, till then displayed the most innocence and integrity become the driving narrative - the evil. Meanwhile, the overtly self-serving character shines with a good albeit misguided heart in the end. Incidentally, this was the first pairing of Park Seo-joon and Son Hyeon-ju; they would team up later in Itaewon Class as father and son, reprising the flavour of the relationship they seemed to have in this film.
