Quotes

  • Henry Mellon : I'm hurt pretty good.

Francis Mellon : Let me see. Open it up. All right. Put that hand on it, and hold it tight. OK? Just keep it like that, all right?

Henry Mellon : I'm sittin' down.

Francis Mellon : Don't sit down!

    [Henry sits on ground]

Francis Mellon : All right, sit down.

  • Henry Mellon : Evening Miss Small.

    Betsy Small : Hello, Henry.

    [tearfully]

    Betsy Small : Sorry.

Henry Mellon : Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's a nice night out tonight. Out here.

Betsy Small : [sobbing]  I suppose.

Henry Mellon : Warm. Well, it's not too cold.

  • [in the middle of an epic discussion about the weather]

Henry Mellon : Either way, it was clear and chilly for two days after that, and in between we had a frost and - What you're not remembering was there was a warm day when it was clear and warm, and it got nice and warm in the afternoon. Real nice. We was outside all day and didn't need a jacket.

Betsy Small : I'll have to think about it. Can you hold these?

    [She gives Henry her gloves]

    Henry Mellon : Sure.

Betsy Small : What happened to your hand?

Henry Mellon : Oh, I was - got a cut on it.

Betsy Small : Goodness! Are you all right?

Henry Mellon : Doctor's gonna amputate it tomorrow, so...

    Betsy Small : Oh, goodness!

Henry Mellon : No, no. It's fine. Doesn't hurt any.

Betsy Small : Oh, that's good. I got a real big bruise on my leg the other day. I wish it would never go away. Wanna see what someone gave me? Here.

[produces a bottle and a cup]

    Betsy Small : Want any?

[She gives Henry the cup and begins filling it]

Betsy Small : All right. hold still.

Henry Mellon : All this at once?

    Betsy Small : Mm hmm.

    [He drinks]

Henry Mellon : Mmm. Want any?

Betsy Small : I've already had it.

[Henry kisses Betsy twice; Betsy bursts into tears]

    Henry Mellon : Betsy?

Betsy Small : [tearfully]  I didn't want my first kiss to be with you!

  • Henry Mellon : One time, my brother told me if you stick hot red peppers in your boot, you'd keep your feet warm. He didn't tell me that you gotta keep 'em on the outside of the stocking. So I stuck 'em up underneath my stocking, and I was walking around all day, just thinking to myself, "This actually works. Feels like my feet are on fire." Then I took my stockings off, and my feet were all red and blistered. Couldn't walk on 'em for three weeks.

  • Henry Mellon : [narrating]  There has been two men shot. Killed accidentally, and one for crossing a guard. This war might last longer than me. Forget me not. Your brother, Henry.

  • Union Soldier : [reading dictated letter back]  "I will tell you all about our way of getting along."

Henry Mellon : And - I don't want him to worry about us, so, uh, say, "I don't want you to worry about me. We are getting along first rate."
