Unleashed is a cute bargain bin type of film which you may not remember in a week, but you will certainly enjoy as you view it.

Warning: Spoilers
Summary

Emma (Kate Micucci) is an app designer whose focus is astrology/astronomy. She makes one app named "Nightsky" which her boyfriend at the time, Luke (Josh Brener), says will be a hit! So he steals it. Thus sending her into a slight depression for, with her being an orphan, trust is a major issue. Making her pets Ajax {Human form: Diego} (Justin Chatwin) and Summit {Human form: Sam} (Steve Howey) life savers.

Especially sometime later, after moving to San Francisco, when she starts her next app. One similar to "Nightsky" but slightly different? It isn't necessarily made clear what the difference is. What is made clear though is that thanks to Emma's Jupiter transit, her two pets get to become human. Leading to them battling for Emma's affection due to the understanding of her only being able to have one live-in male human at a time.

But, in the long run, they provide as humans what they provided as pets: Comfort. They help Emma with the launch of this new app, deal with Luke who appears at the summit for the app's launch, and even point her in the direction of Carl (Sean Astin). The guy partly responsible for them turning into humans in the first place. Thus giving us a very light romantic comedy.

Highlights

Kate Micucci

Being that Micucci is adorable, it makes her being a protagonist an easy thing to get on board with. Especially when paired with a bit of a sob story for, as noted below, she has this sort of smile which looks like it has a bit of darkness behind it. Which helps with what we learn about Emma, be it her ex stealing her app or being an orphan.

But perhaps the thing she does best, which I must admit I was sort of surprised to see, is that she is very good at making her co-stars look good. Take Emma's friend Nina (Hana Mae Lee) for example. In a way, she kind of seems like a jerk who claims to be friends with Emma yet seems to spend a good amount of her time insulting her. To the point, it often seems they are only friends because, outside of their boss Monty (Illeana Douglas), they are one of the few women in the company.

Yet, thanks to Micucci's charm, she helps you get past how Mae Lee plays Nina and you grow to like her. The same goes for Chatwin as Ajax, or rather Diego. For the way Chatwin, like Howey, plays up pet stereotypes, it seemingly is supposed to be comical, but often falls flat. However, Micucci is able to bring about this idea that what likely was supposed to be a joke is just her pet friends being odd, adjusting to human bodies, and being carefree. It is like, she, with her presence and interaction, is able to guide the aforementioned to crafting more interesting characters. Ones which don't seem either two-dimensional or terribly bland.

Criticism

Story Wise, It Doesn't Do Anything Noteworthy

Unleashed is like that person who you see if you buy breakfast. It's friendly, likable, but the interaction you have with them doesn't have much depth. It is pretty much all pleasantries. Making it when Emma reveals she is an orphan, just like if that breakfast person was to tell you the same thing, it is awkward and you have no idea how to respond. If only because it seems to come out of nowhere and oddly becomes a topic that seems to suddenly infiltrate a lot of your small talk.

Now, dropping that analogy, the issue with this film is that the whole orphan thing comes halfway and seems like they are trying to add a layer to Emma. One which is supposed to make you feel worse about her ex-boyfriend stealing her app. Yet, in the long run, it feels somewhere between a cheap ploy and something which underestimates Micucci's talent. For while Micucci is known for usually playing eccentric, yet adorable, characters, like most comedians, you can see this sadness in her. Something that doesn't require what first feels like a random fact but then is grinded into the story to make up for the fact it wasn't mentioned earlier on.

Overall: Mixed (Divisive)

I think this film will be noteworthy for Micucci's filmography, if only because she plays the undisputed female lead and handles it well. She owns the film and makes sure when you share a scene with her, you benefit from the interaction. However, the film as a whole is so forgettable. Not just because it lacks the comedy you can see it was going for but it also seems to not pursue being romantic or even allow Micucci to show the heartache of losing two major things in her life in one false swoop. Add in dropping she is an orphan midway through the movie to try to craft some reaction and there is your reason for a Mixed label.

Quirky and nice - and funny
ferguson-628 April 2017
Greetings again from the darkness. Quirky is an overused word to describe far too many offbeat independent movies and unconventional actors. However, sometimes no better word exists, and that's exactly the situation with writer/director Finn Taylor's latest. A full moon cosmic event results in a collision between astronomy and astrology, and just like that … Emma's faithful pet dog and cat are transformed into hunky human boyfriend material.

Adding to the high level of quirk (in the role of Emma) is the extraordinarily multi-talented Kate Micucci ("Garfunkel and Oates") – an actress, comedian, writer, musician and artist. Plus, she is just so darn likable and nice! In fact, "nice" may be the only challenger to quirky in how best to describe this film. Sure it's cute and sweet and delightful, but above all, it's a nice movie whose nice characters will leave you with a nice feeling.

Steve Howey and Justin Chatwin (both from "Shameless") are spot on in their portrayals of Sam and Diego - the humanized dog and cat, respectively. Howey and his bleach blonde hair and boundless energy capture the devoted pooch, while Chatwin is downright hilarious with his feline tendencies that attract a public following. Given much leeway with the roles, we never lose sight of their original connection to love-lost Emma.

While the premise may offend some (though nothing else in the film will), the humor stems from this being a woman's fantasy. Her beloved pets, with full knowledge of her likes and dislikes, and with blind commitment, take on beautiful male human form without losing the lovable pet traits. What more could a women-done-wrong desire? It's also quite a scathing commentary on modern day dating, with the ne'er-do-well Luke (Josh Brener, "Silicon Valley") contrasted to the too-nice Carl (Sean Astin). Hana Mae Lee (Pitch Perfect) is Emma's spunky best bud and co-worker, and Illeana Douglas plays their boss.

There are some terrific Bay Area film locations utilized, and the music is so perfectly matched that we find ourselves saying "of course" as each new song pops up. Filmmaker Taylor certainly could have gone a bit harsher with the commentary and humor, but let's enjoy this quirk for what it is … a really nice time.

odd rom-com
SnoopyStyle3 September 2017
Emma (Kate Micucci) is an animal lover who looks to the stars. Her boyfriend Luke Andrews is allergic and steals her star-gazing app to make millions. She decides to get a dog and a cat, and move to San Francisco. She is befriended by Carl (Sean Astin) who gets her an apartment. She and her co-worker Nina are trying to create an astronomy program. She makes a wish and the stars turn her animals into Diego (Justin Chatwin) and Sam (Steve Howey). Diego becomes an overnight modeling sensation and Sam gets paid training a bunch of guys.

There is a bit of uncomfortableness with the faux-bestiality. It's heightened whenever Diego and Emma get too close. At least, they don't consummate the relationship. It's weird. There is no real chemistry with Sean Astin. Otherwise, this is kinda cute. I like the awkward Kate Micucci. There is some nice fun but it isn't enough.

A very funny and heart warming comedy
Gordon-111 September 2017
This film tells the story of a woman whose pet cat and dog disappear one day. However, two super hot and strangely familiar guys enters her life at the same time.

I am so happy and glad to have watched "Unleashed" because it is surprisingly and unexpectedly good. It is really sweet and romantic because the two guys fight her her attention with no ulterior motives. The woman is pretty, her best friend had got a great personality, and even the boss is sympathetic. Everything about this film oozes sweetness and love. And it's really funny and heart warming! I really enjoyed it.

Quirky fun...with a great cast. This movie will resonate with anyone that has ever wished their faithful furry companions could become human.

I enjoyed all of the characters, but Diego was absolutely perfect.

Hilarilous!
kirbylee70-599-52617922 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
One of the greatest joys you can have watching movies is discovering something that no one else you know has seen and being able to share with them something fantastic that you've found. Those movies that are well made in every sense of the word yet are obscure because no one who backed the film was confident enough to release it wide and instead released it straight to DVD. UNLEASHED is one of those movies.

Kate Miccuci stars as Emma, a software developer and astronomy lover whose latest effort was stolen by her boyfriend who passed it off as his own as he dumps her. Heartbroken she packs up her belongings as well as her dog Sam and cat Diego and moves across the country. She finds a place, lands a new job and meets a nice guy named Carl (Sean Astin) who is a handyman taking care of her apartment building.

While Emma doesn't notice Carl is taken with her she wishes that she could meet a guy who understands her as much as her pets do. The stars align and her wish comes true, sort of. Both Sam and Diego transform into human beings but outside of the house having run out when Carl accidentally left the door open. On the streets and unclothed they begin to find ways to survive.

Here is where some of the most hilarious moments in the film kick in. Both transformed pets continue to display the attitudes that they had while animals. Sam (Steve Howey) is kind of goofy, muscular and ready to play all the time. He finds work as a personal trainer when a group of wannabe joggers see him running at the park.

Diego (Justin Chatwin) on the other hand is all feline. He slinks about giving the air of sensuality that lands him a gig as the newest male model in town. He gives them his name and uses the background of a soap opera star he saw in a show watched with Emma.

As the animals are finding their way in the world they both continue to worry about their owner Emma. And Emma them as well searching the neighborhood for the pair. Helping her is Carl who has printed up a ton of wanted posters for the animals and tacked them up throughout the neighborhood. Here is where she finally recognizes that maybe he's a nice guy after all.

But Sam and Diego are still there this time in human form. Both of them try to get into the good graces of Emma by dating her. With Carl on the backburner she's taken by both for all the wrong reasons. It is left to be seen if she will realize that Carl is who she was meant to be with or not. We're also left to wonder what will become of her two constant companions in human form.

Not only does this become an issue but Emma has a run in with her ex-boyfriend, the jerk who stole her program. You may want her to punch him in the nose but the truth is you hope for something more terrible to happen to him, a comeuppance.

Well made from a technical aspect the movie looks great. The writing here is wonderful with some truly side splitting lines. But it is the actors who make this entire film work. Miccuci, recognizable from her performances as Raj's girlfriend Lucy on THE BIG BANG THEORY, has a great sense of comic timing and displays a vulnerability that makes you want the best for her. She anchors the performances around her.

Astin does a great job as well playing Carl. He's the kind of guy you wish someone you cared for would meet. But it is Chatwin and Howey that steal the show. Their deliveries of the animals turned human are a visual treat to watch as they take on the characteristics of said pets. Words cannot describe how hilarious those moments are in the film.

Chances are most places you look to rent this will either not have a copy or it will be buried. It is treasure worth seeking out. As a matter of fact for me it's a movie I know I'll want to pull off the shelf and watch every now and then in those moments where I need a smile. This movie provides plenty of those moments.

Funny, Sweet, Great Movie
iuphd4 April 2017
I saw this film at the Sonoma Film Festival. It was even better than I expected. Both Justin and Steve nailed their roles as cat/man and dog/man. It was laugh out loud funny to see the two of them inhabiting those roles. If a lab came to life, he would be Steve. And Justin's portrayal of the cat just underscored why I love dogs more. :) The entire cast was well chosen, and the locations were nice, not in every single movie, spots. They added to the movie but weren't a distraction.

The premise is cute, the plot holds together, and the ending is heartwarming.

I rarely laugh out loud at a movie, but there were a couple of scenes where I heard everyone laughing along with me. It was funny but not stupid.

It's the best romantic comedy I've seen in a very long time, and I can't wait to see it again!

It is fair to say than I love it. In fact, I adore it. For the simple motif than it is more than charming. It represents the best choice for the cat - dog owners and for the fans of romance in different form. The performances are great and the story - one of lovely crafted. Sure, it is an easy film but it has the rare gift to be, for its genre, a real gem. After so many dramas and pink romance, blockbusters and thrillers, horrors so far by originals and the army of remakes, "Unleashed" represents fresh air. For the levels of humor, for the great job of actors, for the flavor of old fashion comedy and for something who only the smile after its end could translate it. So, delightful.

excellent film for all animal lovers
amanda-795741 September 2017
"Unleashed" is extremely cheery - great soundtrack, super funny and an excellent cast rounded it out. I liked the way the cast worked together, and thought the cat and dog jokes were really well done. Also beautiful shots of the SF Bay Area. Writer Finn Taylor is a masterful storyteller. Overall, uplifting and very sweet film.

what a cute and refreshing comedy from an outstanding cast
jfelger19 January 2018
I happened to stumble upon this on Netflix and gave it a try since I love the cast...and animals ;) So cute and refreshing, no baggage, just light fun with amazing performances from Steve and Justin (Shameless guys). Kate sings a little, always a treat. Sean is typical Sean (RIP Bob), and then animal aspect/portrayal is not perfect but sweet. All over good streaming flick.

Throughout Unleashed, I was either laughing or had a smile on my face.My mind has a tendency to wander, but it rarely did as I watched this movie. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a movie so much. All of the actors were superb. Do yourself a favor and see Unleashed. I rarely watch a movie more than once, but I know this will be a film I'll return to over the years!

Excellent Movie!
cqbrisbin13 November 2016
I will pay to see this movie multiple times. This was a laugh out loud movie and the acting was perfect! My favorite was Diego who played a human cat spot on. Loved watching him. The movie was well written. Was able to connect with every character. The movie was funny and heartwarming, which is difficult to pull off and yet they did just that. Just writing this review I am giggling over the funny portrayal of Sam and Diego. Always love seeing Sean, brilliant actor. It is hard to go wrong with an animal film. I can't wait for the movie to be released so that I can take my 89 year old mother to see it. Please help get this movie distributed. I t needs to be shared with the general public and not just seen by the Festival people.

A true delight
wtmaxwel23 November 2016
My wife and saw Unleashed at the recent Napa Valley Film Festival. It was a delight to watch. The humor was extremely witty and unique. The plot was a surprise as the description was a little vague but we were hungry for a comedy after all the serious themes of the other films. This was the relief we needed! The plot was clever, the pet characters were hysterical. The movie moved quickly and the plot was not predictable. I think this will be a surprise hit when it is broadly distributed. All pet owners will enjoy the great takes the "animals" bring to their human form. Justin Chatwin and Steve Howley were stand outs! Justin brought a funny seriousness to his role while Steve emerged as a young Will Ferrell. Kate Micucci delivers a great quirky character with a good heart that's been deeply hurt. Her wish for a great "man" is sincere and arrives with big twists and turns. The director poked great fun at our cultish celebrity culture. This is a great date or family movie. Truly fun for all ages.

Sweet, unique, and good feeling movie
Anrachman11 August 2018
I watched Unleashed on cable channel, I din't really hope much at the beginning but later I found it surprisingly good. This type of story (animals turned human) is usually made for kids movie, but this one is for adult audience, you'll find Unleashed a unique movie, different from the usual romantic-comedy movies. The story is simple, but very funny, sweet, and give you good feelling. The actors performances are really good, and the soundtrack is nice too, I love when they played All My Little Words song twice.

Best movie I have seen in years . Laughed out loud belly rolls ! Saw this at the Napa Valley Film Festival and can hardly wait to share it with my friends and family. Great cast , beautiful shots of San Francisco. A true classic for all animal lovers as well . And a definite mood changer . If you need a lift see this movie . Bravo Bravo Bravo The cast is so talented and with people you will recognize. The shots in the city are like what Woody Alllen does for NewYork. I think this should be shared with you nearest and dearest. I dreamed about the movie for 3 days after I saw it and woke up chuckling . And still find myself going back and telling my clients about the scenes . Who also laughed out loud and it made there day brighter while being thought provoking.

Wonderful Comedy
sheilacohen-5186014 November 2016
Saw this film at the Napa Valley Film Festival. It was adorable - funny, charming, quirky - I loved it and so did the audience. Great performances by both the human and animal cast. Emma, an app developer, has been unlucky in love. She adopts a dog and cat and moves to a new city to start over. The pets love Emma but an open door allows the animals to get out. Something unusual happens and the dog and cat must find their way back to Emma and Emma must find herself. Justin Chatwin is perfect as "Diego." Kate Micucci is wonderful as Emma. Sean Astin plays Emma's new friend Carl. The film has so much warmth and is a real feel-good comedy.

90 minutes of joy
bcrdavis-0897718 April 2017
I saw Unleashed at the Sonoma International Film Festival. The movie theater was packed and laughter rang clear, throughout this film. If you have ever loved a cat or a dog, you can so relate to the actions that are assumed by the characters. The story line is sweet and the acting is spot on. I will be encouraging all of my animal-loving friends to see this film when it (hopefully) arrives on the big screen in most communities.

Funny comedy.
pamandleonhall9 March 2017
We really enjoyed seeing this movie at one of the previews in Berkeley.

My college aged kids saw it later at a film festival and really liked it. I can't wait to see it again. It's family friendly and has a great heart. Like others have said, it was much better than we expected. Not all movies hold your attention and are truly funny.

Original, quirky, and well acted. Everyone loves the cat!

I'm going to buy it on iTunes but it would be nice to get it on DVD to give to someone specific who I know will appreciate it.

Fun for non pet lovers
pagbwi30 July 2020
Don't like pets. Value service animals. Disagree that this movie is only for pet lovers. It was LOL funny and Chatwin and Howey were both a hoot in their transformations. Music was well scored. I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. Watch it open minded and be prepared to be entertained. It was refreshing to be entertained. I don't watch movies to be educated, lectured or influenced by others. A movie, for me, is an escape from mundane, a journey to joy; like good theater it should suspend reality and take you into the world the characters inhabit. What quarantine? What pandemic? Enjoy this movie!
