Two years ago, the bizarre story dominating the news cycle wasn’t about a group of billionaires lost at sea, but a different group of billionaires panicking as amateur investors on Reddit and YouTube inflated a doomed GameStop stock to get rich quick. In the first trailer for Dumb Money, the upcoming film based on Ben Mezrich’s book The Antisocial Network, financial analyst Keith Gil (portrayed by Paul Dano) takes that GameStop short squeeze a very long way.

Don’t feel bad, even highly respected executive editors of business coverage are still a bit confused about the GameStop stock situation and the meme-stock industry in general. It’s all good, Netflix’s three-part docuseries “Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga” is here to educate — and entertain — all of us. The program accomplishes both of those goals, which it delivers in a bingeable 120-minute package.
The basics of what went down online and in real life (and in the Netflix docuseries) go like this: In 2020, video-game retailer GameStop was the most-shorted company on Wall Street, as hedge-fund managers bet the heavily brick-and-mortar store selling physical media would go bankrupt in an increasingly digital world (and that goes double for the video-game industry itself).
What was originally a wise assumption soon got out of hand. When some savvy number-crunching Redditors realized just how much money was stacked against GameStop’s continued existence,...

Shares of the happiest of exhibitors AMC Entertainment continued an upward trajectory Monday fueled by retail traders on Reddit chat rooms, even as a leading Wall Street analyst downgraded the stock to ‘sell’ and valued it at $1.
“In our view, the recent volatility and spike in the company’s stock, thanks to the Reddit/WallStreetBets crowd, has decoupled AMC’s share price and its valuation. Near term prospects of bankruptcy have been avoided thanks to $1.2bn of fresh capital being raised since mid-December. However, equity shareholders have been diluted by roughly 75% over the last couple months and there is still approximately $5.7bn of debt, a total which is growing each quarter due to deferred interest payments,” writes Eric Handler of Mkm Partners.
Dilution refers to millions of newly issued AMC shares, including to Silver Lake Partners, which last week swapped its AMC bonds for stock and subsequently cashed out in...

Disney dropped a new trailer today (view below) for “Raya and the Last Dragon” (opening in theaters and streaming on Disney+ March 5), and last week screened 30 minutes of footage for select journalists. It’s very evident that the animation studio is doubling down on cultural diversity with the badass warrior princess from Southeast Asia. Yet there’s a new wrinkle in the latest evolution of the Disney Princess story. The fearless Raya (voiced by Vietnamese American Kelly Marie Tran of “Star Wars” fame) discovers that she can’t save her fractious kingdom of Kumandra alone — she needs the help of a water dragon, Sisu (Awkwafina), the last of its species, which transforms into a funny, if awkward, human, and a ragtag team of adversaries to fight a powerful force known as the Druun.
New cast announcements include Gemma Chan as Raya’s nemesis, Namaari; Daniel Dae Kim as Raya’s visionary father,...

Apple is nearing an order for the limited series “In with the Devil,” with Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser onboard to star, Variety has learned.
The six-episode series would be based on the 2010 novel “In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption” by James Keene and Hillel Levin. The book tells the story of Keene’s real life when he was sentenced to prison but offered his freedom in exchange for coaxing a confession out of a fellow inmate, a suspected serial killer.
The series is described as being told through the lens of an intimate relationship between two prisoners, exploring the lengths that people will go to in order to seek redemption, if true absolution is ever really possible, and if so, at what costs. Egerton would star in the Keene role.
Dennis Lehane will write and executive produce the adaptation.

Jamie Dornan was in lockdown with his family when he received a fan letter that was more than a little creepy. The star of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies was sent “a collage of photographs of a kid,” with a note about his most famous role.
“Someone saying that it was my kid, and my wife should know that I have this kid who’s 7 years old,” Dornan, 38, says over a Zoom call. He squints to absorb the weirdness of this allegation. “I think they were trying to say that the kid was mine and Dakota Johnson’s, and we’d had this baby while we made the first ‘Fifty Shades’ movie,” Dornan says. “It piqued our interest, let’s say. It was a bit freaky.”
Dornan learned all about freaky things when he suited up as Christian Grey, the sexually adventurous businessman based on the E.L. James books that became a cultural phenomenon.

The death of Alan Rickman in 2016 at the age of 69 was a blow to those who’ve appreciated his many performances over the years, including in the Harry Potter franchise, Die Hard, and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, to name just a few. However, fans will get a chance to learn more about Rickman’s perspective via the publication of 27 of his diaries as a book through a family-approved project that should reach us in Fall 2022.
Canongate acquired the worldwide rights to the material of the diaries, which are being released in the United States by Holt, and represent work completed over a period of 25 years. The book is currently planned to be titled The Diaries of Alan Rickman, although we’d imagine a more creative name may be found by 2022. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jerry Bruckheimer became one of the most powerful and recognizable producers in Hollywood thanks to an astonishing track record of success. When people saw his name attached to a movie, they knew to expect a high concept action-packed blockbuster that was big on explosive pyrotechnics and star power.
At his peak, Bruckheimer was involved in Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun, Crimson Tide, Bad Boys, The Rock, Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy of the State and many more. While his reputation has somewhat diminished throughout the 21st Century following a series of box office disappointments offset by the odd hit like this year’s Bad Boys For Life, the 77 year-old was one of the major driving forces behind Disney’s multi-billion Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Photo: 'Peter Pan and Wendy'/Disney A few years ago, Disney began a cycle of turning their beloved animated films into live-action adaptations. So far, Disney has made huge strides with their live-action adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty and the Beast, Christopher Robin, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, and Mulan. Some of these films have done better than others in regard to audience reviews, but they all point toward Disney’s future of transitioning classic animated tales to live-action big-budget films for the whole family. The extensive list of already released live-action Disney remakes does not even include all of the live-actions that are currently in pre-production. These include Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lilo & Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, Bambi, Robin Hood, Hercules, and of course, the topic of this article,...

The role also reunites Krueger with Roswell, New Mexico EP Chris Hollier, who worked on The Originals. Despite his casual irreverence, which Liz finds infuriating, Heath cares deeply for his work and like Liz, is willing to do whatever it takes to make the world a better place. Animated sequel The Croods: A New Age isn’t just one of the very few major titles left on the 2020 release schedule, but it’s also the only one that’s been moved forward on the calendar, which is an incredible rarity in a year when most other would-be blockbusters have packed up entirely and fled to 2021.
That’s especially good going when you consider that the project was once abandoned entirely despite the first installment raking in almost $590 million at the box office. If you’ll recall, The Croods 2 was first announced just a month after the original hit theaters in March 2013, but due to some creative turmoil and a series of delays, it was canceled altogether in November 2016.

Disney is in the works on another movie based on one of its iconic theme park rides, this time Space Mountain, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Joby Harold, the writer behind Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Army of the Dead” and the Obi-Wan Kenobi prequel series, is writing the screenplay for the film that’s in very early stages of development. The film is intended for theatrical release.
No logline details were available, but the Space Mountain movie will be a live-action family film inspired by the Tomorrowland attraction at both Disneyland and Disney World.
Harold is also producing with his partner Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, as is the production house Rideback.
While the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise has long been a cash cow for Disney, it was also recently reported that “Ghostbusters” writer Katie Dippold would give another stab at a movie inspired by the Haunted Mansion.

After Ridley Scott’s Gladiator burst onto the scene in 2000 and raked in over $460 million at the box office, going on to win five Academy Awards from thirteen nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, the rest of Hollywood suddenly jumped on the bandwagon and decided to make big budget action-driven epics of their own.
Over the next few years, countless movies clearly inspired by that success were released including The Last Samurai, Alexander, King Arthur and The Alamo, and Scott himself even returned to the well twice more with Kingdom of Heaven and Robin Hood. But the only title that manage to exceed Gladiator at the box office was Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy.

Have you listened to the 1938 Smackdown yet? Such a lively conversation about very memorable movies, for better and worse. We've embedded it again below but some of my personal favourite bits are Steven Weber's Jimmy Stewart impression, Joanna Robinson's reaction to the "twist" in Of Human Hearts, Glow's Britney Young talking about having a very expressive face and directors asking you to tone it down, and Claudio's deep hatred of opera voices of the 1930s via The Great Waltz.

Stream of the Day: 10 Years After ‘Tron: Legacy,’ the Original Film Explains Why a Sequel Was Doomed
With readers turning to their home viewing options more than ever, this daily feature provides one new movie each day worth checking out on a major streaming platform.
When Steven Lisberger first conceived of what would become his 1982 film “Tron,” the fledgling filmmaker had a startling vision of the future: an animated feature that could explore the world of early video games like “Pong” in the kind of detail not yet available for live-action moviemaking. With producing partner Donald Kushner — with whom he’d made the 90-minute Olympics-themed animated feature “Animalympics” — Lisberger set up an animation shop to bring “Tron” to fruition. However, they eventually decided to explore the story through a blend of live-action footage and computer animated sequences.

Barry Jenkins and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming up to adapt one of the most acclaimed documentaries in recent history into a feature film for Netflix.
The duo is joining forces to adapt “Virunga,” the 2014 documentary about the battle to save the Congo’s mountain gorilla population. Jenkins will write the film, while DiCaprio will produce through his Appian Way production company. Phillip Watson also will produce via Appian Way, while Joanna Natasegara will produce for Violet Films. Jennifer Davisson will also serve as a producer and Orlando von Einsiedel, who directed the original documentary, will executive produce.
Other details about the upcoming film, including a prospective release date, are under wraps. There have been a lot of messages and the odd calls that I’ve attended, asking me how I’m holding up. Consoling me. I guess people who know you and me..know us as well. The fact that Marvel Studios have to share the rights to the character with Sony means that Spider-Man isn’t afforded the same sort of creative leeway as the vast majority of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s other superheroes, but that doesn’t mean that Tom Holland’s take on the iconic web-slinger isn’t set to be positioned as one of the franchise’s figureheads throughout Phase Four and beyond.
We’ve already heard that Marvel are planning on making at least six more Spider-Man movies, and with each stage of the shared universe being meticulously planned out in advance by Kevin Feige and his team, you can guarantee that they know exactly where Peter Parker is headed despite the upcoming third installment still being shrouded in mystery.

When Kingdom Hearts was first announced as a PlayStation 2 game about 20 years ago, it sounded insane. An action RPG collaboration between Square Enix and Disney in which the worlds of Final Fantasy and Disney collide? How’s that going to work? I’m honestly still not sure, but the surreal concept was a smash hit, spawning a thirteen game series in which hero Sora and his buddies Donald and Goofy journey through worlds based on iconic Disney movies.
The most recent entry in the series was last year’s PlayStation 4 game Kingdom Hearts 3. This was a barnstorming success, selling 5 million copies in its first week of release, making it the both the fastest and best-selling in the franchise’s history. And now it seems that Disney wants to capitalize on its popularity.

On Monday night, Billy Joel was one of the few faces lingering in the otherwise largely deserted Times Square. His face appeared high in the sky, beamed onto 12 giant digital billboards in the famously chaotic midtown Manhattan neighborhood. It simultaneously beamed into TVs and internet livestreams as part of the Rise Up New York! Covid-19 benefit telethon, which Joel brought to a close with his 1976 New York City anthem, “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway).” A few blocks away, the lights of the Empire State Building sparkled in time with his piano.

At the 2001 Oscars, Russell Crowe took center stage at the Dolby Theater to accept best actor for “Gladiator,” using his speech to urge young viewers to follow their acting dreams. Now, Crowe tells Variety that his kids can look up the speech and realize that their father had something “relatively intelligent” to say.
“Gladiator,” a blockbuster hit where Crowe plays a Roman general sold into slavery, was physically taxing on the actor, who was then in his mid-30s. He narrowly escaped a tiger on set, stayed in tip-top shape working out at a makeshift gym on the outskirts of the Colosseum and rode a horse down a steep mountainside to give director Ridley Scott the perfect shot. He and Scott developed a collaborative friendship that would last for decades as the actor has worked with Scott on four more films: “Robin Hood,” “A Good Year,” “American Gangster” and “Body of Lies.

During Fox’s two decades in charge of the X-Men franchise, the studio were never shy about producing sequels, remakes, reboots and spinoffs in order to extend the brand’s shelf life, and while the overall quality of their comic book movies was very hit-or-miss, giving Wolverine and Deadpool their own standalone series outside of the main timeline earned them almost $3 billion at the box office to top up the earnings made by Charles Xavier’s team.
However, one spinoff that never managed to escape years stuck in development hell was Gambit, which had Channing Tatum set to star in the lead role and produce for over five years before it was eventually canceled when Disney completed their takeover of Fox. Last year, two of Disney’s biggest releases were Aladdin and The Lion King. With each earning more than a billion in worldwide grosses, the studio will continue to produce live-action remakes of their beloved animated classics until the well runs dry. Let’s just hope they don’t get to a point where they’re remaking Pixar movies, too.
Mulan was up next with a spring release, but due to Covid-19, the film has been delayed. What’s next for the Mouse House, though? Well, they’re already planning remakes of Robin Hood and Bambi, among others, and now comes news that they’re also looking at Hercules, something that We Got This Covered told you last year.
Jeffry Silver and Karen Gilchrist are producing the remake of the 1997 animated film and plans are for it to be a theatrical release with songs from the original in addition to a few new ones.

Although Disney may have claimed that their live-action remakes aren’t going to go on forever, they look set to continue for a long while yet at the very least. Having earned countless billions for the Mouse House at the box office, the re-imaginings of their animated classics have added yet another hugely lucrative revenue stream onto a portfolio that already includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Pixar and Star Wars as the studio moves forward in their quest to dominate every aspect of popular culture with little in the way of competition.

We are still months away from the Season 2 premiere of Disney+’s flagship original series The Mandalorian, but work is already underway on Season 3, sources close to the production confirmed to Deadline.
Pre-production has begun and creator Jon Favreau has been writing scripts for the third installment, sources say. This isn’t surprising, given that most hit shows, particularly one as successful and elaborate VFX-wise as The Mandalorian, begin work on a new season as soon as the previous season has wrapped. Production on Season 2 concluded in early March, before filming shutdowns and stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus pandemic took effect.

It’s always funny in a crisis like the current Covid-19 pandemic to see people screaming about how they don’t believe artists should receive financial relief. Unless they’ve been sitting on their lawn and staring at the sky these past two months, however, they’ve dealt very extensively with art on a daily basis. Maybe it’s entertainment like books, TV, movies, or music. Maybe it’s property such as homes, furniture, or interior design. And if we dig a bit further, we discover these people are also generally the sort of Ayn Rand objectivists who demand compensation be given for “genius.” You can’t simultaneously not pay for media and spout off about how nothing should be given away for free without becoming that which you’ve used your histrionics to rail against.

With Ryan Reynolds recently confirming that the project was in active development, Deadpool 3 is widely expected to be the first former Fox property to arrive under the Disney and Marvel Studios banner, and at this rate, it will probably hit theaters before The New Mutants manages to see the light of day.
The Merc with a Mouth’s third solo outing, and first for his new studio overlords, could signal a turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe given the character’s reputation as a foul-mouthed, self-aware and definitively R-rated antihero, which marks uncharted territory for the franchise. There’s already been speculation about some behind the scenes disagreements over Deadpool 3’s tone, and it’ll be interesting to see how much resistance star/producer/co-writer Ryan Reynolds faces from the family-friendly Mouse House.

According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Disney is developing a live-action Robin Hood remake and Han is returning to the Fast & Furious series – Netflix is busy working on a film based on the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering, and they’re looking at Angelina Jolie to lead the project as Liliana Vess.
More than just a card, Liliana is a ‘human planeswalker’ – one of the most powerful beings in the universe according to Magic: The Gathering lore – as well as a master necromancer. Her story has been thoroughly explored in War of the Spark: Forsaken as well, a novel based on the game written by Greg Weisman, which Netflix will presumably be using as the blueprint for their own adaptation.
Though she’s not locked in just yet and there are other actresses being eyed, too, Jolie seems like a pretty good casting choice for Liliana.

Based on what we’ve seen from the footage so far, Mulan looks to be a different beast entirely from the majority of Disney’s live-action remakes of their classic animated movies. Not only is it the first one to roll off the production line that’s been given a PG-13 rating due to the intense battle scenes, but it also doesn’t look to be a shot-for-shot retread of the original.
Most of the Mouse House’s recent reboots have simply taken the story, characters, plot points, songs and even jokes from their animated predecessors and just tacked on a couple of extra scenes to extend the running time. But Mulan has taken a different approach and looks to stand on its own merits as a blockbuster action adventure.
One aspect of the original that’s missing is wisecracking dragon sidekick Mushu, something the fans are not happy about.
