It's an interesting thing reading negative reviews before watching a series finale...
killen-1234525 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I remember how I was going to watch the final episode of an older series, some months ago, and before I did so, I could not resist the temptation of reading what other reviewers had written...

However, my own response to watching that particular finale was quite a pleasant surprise, and I could say the same thing about this finale, although this is not the final episode of the whole series, just the current half season.

I suspect one reason why many people may get annoyed sometimes is because they get something they did not quite expect, something "different", and that was exactly how I felt about this two-part finale, "Operation Moongoose"

The script was straightforward, but cleverly and beautifully presented, and I imagine how the actors (especially Snow White) must have enjoyed playing all these "reverse parts", because that is, more or less, what the last half of season 4 was about: The producers wanted to play with the traditional fairy tale concept of "Heroes and Villains", and they successfully managed to do so, I must say - even if I personally feel there was a lot more to discover. And this half season finale did feel slightly brief, to be honest (that is perhaps the only thing I would be critical about concerning these two episodes). Hopefully things will develop further in the future.

Another striking thing about this episodes is the occasional hint of a subtle moral. Even if this is a fantasy series it does feel that the producers are trying to say something throughout several episodes - sometimes I would agree with their message, sometimes I would not.

We get a frank explanation to what had motivated the author to manipulate the stories of the fairy tale characters. It may seem petty at first, but I would say it is rather realistic and extremely human - we tend to take little things, small failures in our life and put them on a big screen, ultimately to let them govern a lifetime...

Snow White also made a very interesting statement when facing the author: "You became a villain, and villains take their happiness on the expense of others. But it only makes them more miserable, in the end." This almost felt like a biblical allusion, whether the writers intended it or not. Living on the expense of others is exactly what the fall of man caused, according to the Scriptures.

And, of course, "This is not just a bunch of stories - this is the truth" is what the apprentice stated about the story book "Once Upon A Time". Honestly, I do not believe the writers would make such a subtle allusion to the Bible, but it crossed my Christian mind.

I wonder if it sometimes may be a good idea to read negative reviews before watching something. Somehow, I just sat down with low to none expectation, after having read some negative reviews here, and was positively overwhelmed by all these above-mentioned things.

In other words, I was indeed very satisfied with this finale. I wonder if the next season will be just as interesting?

Heroes And Villains

Warning: Spoilers
That should have been the title of the episode

To be honest, I started watching with very little expectation for this finale, I am pleased at how wrong I was!

Although I see there are a lot of people who are disappointed for some reason, I do not think they are qualified to judge in this matter as most of them are disappointed that a character they love or have emotional attachment to did not get enough screen time or the ending they wanted. When it comes to judging a work of Art, personal feelings are respected but have no real say on the Art itself! and this finale was indeed a work of Art and I can see the writers inspiration in it.

Granted many fan Predictions were confirmed today, but that only adds to the Awe of it. I was drawn from the first minute to last and was left excited for whats to come! and thats how a finale should be! I somehow knew the author was from our world!, and that scene with him choosing a pen frankly reminded me of Lost where john locke has to choose an item to prove if he is the one.

I was amazed at how Light rumpels heart was once the Darkness was removed, yet not surprised because despite having all that Darkness in him, Rumpel was never Truly evil as other villains like Regina or Kora etc.. Which should only speak at how pure his heart must be without the Darkness!

I know many people do not like Henry but I personally am quite comfortable with his scenes, especially in this finale, he performed most Admirably, and so did all the other characters/actors.

I never cared for emma much, but in this episode I almost had a crush on her, Almost which says something about her performance in the very least.

Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Jared Gilmore, Robert Carlyle, Emilie de Ravin, Colin O'Donoghue All gave it their best in this Finale, and if you look past personal disappointments perhaps you can enjoy it for what is, as I did :)

Thank you for this finale and I hope season 5 will be equally entertaining.

Great season

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed Season Four a lot, the Frozen arc was nice even it wss there by popularity, I prefered the villain / author plot more. It could have carried the entire season. I loved to see Emma becoming more comfortable with her relationship with Killian. I loved how she was willing to help Regine get her happy ending too.

Now, this finale. I am weak for AU as any other, and seeing the characters as the opposite was hilarious! Snow White as the Evil Queen (though I did thini she mimicked Lana bit too much) was fun as seeing Killian being this shy, insecure deck boy. I loved Colin's change of expressions, he truly is amazing actor. The ending was predictable, as we knew Rumple had tried to fill Emma's heart with darkness. Jennifer is wonderful actress once again.

Continuing the race to the finish
TheLittleSongbird15 June 2018
When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

Season 4 had a lot to live up after Season 3 being as impressive as it was. At this early stage of the season, one can see a lot of promise, some may argue that it is capitalising on 'Frozen's' success but there is much more to the season than that. This promise was apparent from the get go, with a great season opener in "A Tale of Two Sisters". As far as the previous Season 4 episodes go, they were all decent to brilliant with the only small dip being "Family Business" and the best being the "Smash the Mirror" two parter, "Best Laid Plans" and "Mother".

Both parts of the season finale "Operation Mongoose" for me are wonderful. It is a tense, compelling and emotional episode with inventive twists and turns, the ending in both parts are well done.

If there was a preference for which was better between the two parts, for me it was the first. This second part was incredibly well done with lots of amazing things but let down a bit by Jared Gilmore looking uncomfortable and David and Mary Margaret not having as much to do or add as much as they should have done.

Loved the expanded role of The Author, bringing a lot of mystery, fun, intrigue and tension to the proceedings. His alliance with Gold is a perfect example of character and story advancing and the race against time story is always engrossing. A lot happens with several characters involved, but in a way that never feels over-stuffed or crammed. One doesn't feel like they're going round in circles, in fact the story is pushing forward, and the characterisation is not contradictory or underdone.

All the acting is strong apart from Gilmore, with particularly terrific performances coming from Patrick Fischler and Robert Carlyle proving why he was always one of the show's best and most consistent actors. Lana Parrilla, Colin O'Donoghue and Jennifer Morison don't put a foot wrong either. Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas do their best with their roles.

Furthermore, "Operation Mongoose: Part 2" is a very handsomely mounted episode visually, the settings and costumes are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie cutter. It is photographed beautifully too. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable theme tune.

Writing has the right balance of humour, pathos, mystery and intrigue, or corn or cheesiness here. Some disagree with this it seems though and that's fine. This aspect has come on such a long way since when 'Once Upon a Time' first started, much more complexity and nuance.

Overall, wonderful. 9/10 Bethany Cox

Once Upon a Time....

Warning: Spoilers
this used to be a great show. Nice mix of drama and cheese. This finale was just too much cheese. Unfortunately with the cheese comes a great deal of overacting. And unfortunately, the actor that plays Henry is such a bad actor he actually is a major distraction when given such a big part. Watch the scene where he is going to be attacked by an ogre and tell me he looks terrified. He looks indifferent. This, and the far too convoluted storyline made this finale the most unenjoyable episode to date. I guess you can't tell if a young child will mature into a better actor, but when he doesn't, don't increase the size of his part. Have one of the witches turn him into a different looking boy and hire a better actor.

Some fun moments, but a horrible finale. Predictable and boring. Give Hook a break, and for goodness sake, don't encourage battered women to go back to abusive relationships.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, no. I'm sorry. This was a horrible finale.

Yes, there were some fun moments, and I'm not saying it couldn't have been worse, because it could have. I'm sure it was fun for the actors to switch roles for a while and it was fun for us to see them, but there were so many things wrong with the plot line as a whole.

Personally, I've never been all that interested in the Enchanted Forest flashbacks. I feel like short ones once in a while are helpful, but the show goes overboard with whole story lines that don't add enough to the current character's story arc. To do an entire finale where it was basically one big alternate EF storyline was just pointless. We knew going in that whatever happened there would be erased as long as Henry succeeded, and obviously we knew he was going to succeed because... duh. So any drama was totally taken out of any characters dying or Robin getting married or Snow being evil.

Apart from all of that, I'm just really starting to get bored with this show. We all knew Emma was going to go dark eventually, so that wasn't a twist or surprise in any way. Also, if you're going to constantly screw your characters over, you've got to give them some wins once in a while, and you have to make those wins satisfying enough for the viewers to want to stick with it. Like, the whole Robin/Regina thing has been building all season, and then by the time they finally got together, it was completely overshadowed and anti-climatic. I don't feel like we really even got a moment to be happy for them. And for goodness sake, people, give Hook a break for ONCE. He keeps getting the total shaft and he's a really good sport and just wants to do the right thing and be a good guy and protect the people he loves, and he NEVER gets a breath to just be happy. Ever. It's getting so old.

On top of all those things, I'm sorry to all the Rumple/Belle shippers out there, but her going back to him is some seriously new level of messed up. She got her moment of strength standing up for herself and no longer allowing her evil husband to abuse and use her, and now she's just running right back to him. This is a family show - what message is this sending? You love him, so you're going to stay with him no matter how abusive he is or how many people he hurts? Gross. Just...no.

I don't know when Snow and Charming became so uninteresting and I'm not even sure why, but I really don't have a lot to say about them. They're almost completely unnecessary to the whole plot line. I would love to see some moments with Emma and her parents having some real heart to hearts. I feel like they're really throwing away some huge opportunities to explore and deepen those relationships.

Usually I see reviews like this and think, "Geez if you hate the show so much, just don't watch it." But the thing is, I actually LOVE this show, and that's the reason I'm so disappointed with this finale. I feel like it has so much untapped potential that the writers are totally missing out on by re-hashing the same old patterns over and over again.

What I loved: Regina, as always. Henry is the author. Wimpy Hook was hilarious. As frustrating as it was to watch Hook get the shaft AGAIN, the acting and emotional intensity at the end was really, really good.

So many things about the episode I loved in themselves, but just didn't make any sense as part of the larger whole, which made this one of the worst season finales I've ever seen.

A poorly-written end to a mostly overworked season
respiritu12 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'll openly admit that ABC's Once Upon A Time is a guilty pleasure of mine, but the season finale last Sunday was ABYSMAL. It had some of the worst writing and plot progression I've ever seen in the show's history. But at least the VFX was really well done for a change.

While no one would ever expect the show to win any awards for writing, it does shine when it delivers genuine and heartfelt moments between its characters. The season finale however, was a clunky, lumbering mess that tried its darndest to tie together the rabid retconning and rule bending that permeated the second half of the season (Zelina's back? And what was the point of the Sorcerer's hat being labeled as inescapable when practically everyone in Storybrooke who was sucked into it was eventually released?), but instead wound up delivering one ham-handed dialogue after another that were little more than forced exposition and rushed character development.

And then for them to resort to a Deus-ex-machina of the kind not seen since the second season finale of The Legend of Korra, I'd be hard-pressed to think of any other reason other than that the writers had written themselves into a literary corner and were simply desperate to hit the reset button to set up the next season.

Yes, it's a network show, and it doesn't have to be smart. It's about fairy tale characters in the real world after all. But while it doesn't have to be intelligent, it doesn't have to be this stupid either.

Addendum: For what it's worth, Cruella De Vil gets my nomination for Best New Character this season. Her motivations are simple (she's a straight-up psycho and an entertaining one at that) and her history was fleshed out excellently. She also added a welcome layer of horror to the show given how she had her mother mauled to death by dogs and laughed as she watched it happen. Victoria Smurfit did a stand-up job embodying the character in both her actions and mannerisms, so it's too bad we likely won't be seeing her anymore.

Used to be edgy and innovative; now just a cheesy mash
alexczx11 May 2015
This show is over the hill. What used to be interesting and edgy is now saccharine-sweet and cheesy. Jennifer Morrison is overacting; Colin O'Donoghue used to be "tall, dark and dangerous" and now is just a boring boyfriend following Emma like a lovesick puppy, without any personality of his own; and Ginnifer Goodwin obviously decided to remain fat beyond the point when pregnancy-related excuses were acceptable. Last season, the producers covered for that with cleverly designed clothes and a body double (too bad they couldn't cover her puffy face in flashbacks), but in this finale she was truly ridiculous as The Evil Queen. The only character she is really fit to play right now is the hapless, frumpy Mary Margaret. It's time to wrap this whole thing up, it's running out of steam.
